On one hand, the final product is really well done, the shots are perfect and the interactions are natural. I liked the football scene in the final movie better with Ali doing the cheerleading routine and Dutch making faces at Daniel, but then you have some nice bits here like how Ali laughs at Daniel saying "Daniel with an L" and this little interaction between Daniel and Lucille that didn't get included in the movie. It's nice to see the two versions and how they add to each other and how they sort of evolved or changed. Like In this one Daniel says his little voice says he must be some kind of coconut and in the final movie he uses the word "yoyo" instead. So happy Mr Avildsen shared this. Rest in peace and thanks for helping create this saga.

Thanks for sharing this. I really identified with the movie. I moved to SoCal from NY shortly after this movie and was that new kid in the area who like the typical SoCal blonde girl and had to deal with feeling out of place. I was also into martial arts and found it as my way to cope with the problems feeling like a runt. Now 49, married with 6 kids, this still has a big impression on me. I really enjoyed Martin Kove in the final film; but, man, Pat E. Johnson is INTENSE! With his training, I don't think a gun would've stopped the Cobra Kai. Kove's character, Kreese, was intense, too, but he came off as very insecure, especially in Karate Kid 3. Pat E. Johnson, on the other hand, was all-business and no-nonsense. He was great as the tournament referee.

Mr. Avildsen, you are by far one of the best directors out there. The cafeteria scene between Johnny and Daniel was a great cut bu you. It would have been way too much Johnny and Daniel and it wasnt needed. The Referee for the end fight scenes would have made a great John Crese. Not only Rocky and this movie were my inspirations, Your other movies Power of one, Lean on me and even For Keeps? were terrific. not to mention i was a big fan of Neighbors with Beluchi and Akroid. Mox j dunno. Johnny at this point would ground & pound Daniel before a teacher could break it up. Woulda been 1 confrontation too many. I admit any scene with Johnny & Daniel are good but might have been overkill. Johnny isn't the typical insecure bully picking on Daniel for sport. He's jealous of his relationship with Ali. The pie bit comes across as even a little too immature for him.

I'd have loved to see Karate Kid as it was originally intended before this even.. The first idea was this to be a serious martial arts movie. Thosiro Mifune was who they wanted for Miyagi's part. Would have 100% been a different movie just from the 'i'm a bad ass' vibe Mifune carried with him.
