During the Second World War, and following the invasion of Poland, around 22,000 polish military officers and members of the intelligentsia were massacred by the Soviet Union’s secret police.
The bodies lay hidden until discovered by the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, at which point relations between the Polish Government in exile, the Allies and the Soviet Union were put to the test.
