The Ethiopian team will only choose the very best athletes who stand a realistic chance of a medal. His impressive second place in the recent London marathon, considering he has now turned 40, was very incredible, but there are equally impressive, and far younger athletes, who probably deserve their first taste of Olympic glory. Also Bekele has never been a consistent marathoner, like Eliud Kipchoge Bekele has been to several Olympic games already, so i recon other runners will get chosen instead.

Sisay, Bekele, Tola makes the most sense. It's crazy to think how Bekele's London performance would have been a NR for most countries and a WR in 2008. In the US, Ryan Hall is the same age as Bekele and ran his PB (just under 2:05) nearly a decade and half ago before giving up running.

If he and Kipchoge were racing over the last few miles in Paris, that would truly be a throwback. Then all we'd need is for Hicham El-Guerrouj to come out of retirement, train for a marathon, and run with Kipchoge and Bekele, and we'd have a rematch of the greatest ever mile runner vs the greatest ever 10k runner vs the greatest ever marathoner.

hey @TRP, if Bekele and Kipchoge are selected, it would be cool to see if any other pair of athletes in history have raced in the olympics with a 20 year gap (5,000m 2004 & 2008, Marathon 2024). Honestly - we shouldn’t be wondering if he can make this team, that should be automatic. Even as crazy as it sounds, if he keeps going sub 2:06-2:07, we may seriously be talking about him the 2028 team. If his motivation stays high it’s absolutely a real possibility. As for Tadese who hasn’t raced, that doesn’t strike me as injured, that strikes me as avoiding anti doping officials and is highly suspect.
