Watched this film the other day, incredible acting by all involved. There is no paedophilia; there is no sexual/romantic relationship between the teacher and the child. Is it inappropriate? Yes, but she is purely about 'nurturing' his talent and trying to make sure that he doesn't fade away and become ignored in the society obsessed with technology and kids growing up too fast. Maggie Gyllenhaal was incredible as a woman descending into madness and none of her actions are at all encouraged or made to feel like they are supported or shown in a good light.

I saw the film. I want to try to give a nuanced assessment of it. In a way, the film is genuine art in the way that it tries to explore an idea and to see where it leads. There is some genuine honesty there, which I appreciated. It's not just an exercise in ideology. It was surprising in that sense. On balance though I would have to say that it is kind of sick. It is sick art.

The Gyllenhaals are beyond talented. Jake's films include some of the most successful and iconic of the 21st Century. And then there's Maggie, whose roles consistently explore unprecedented dynamics of human perspective, motivation, and experience. One of the best movies of this year! People need to understand that art comes from different forms and we can't judge storytelling (at least done right). This movie dares to go to an extreme that literally pits you on a wall making you thinking what's right and what's wrong and the lines that are crossed. Giving me intense Lolita vibes without the romance involved, I think Maggie did an amazing job playing this bored uninspired mother on the verge of a midlife crisis that really makes you empathize instead of criticize. There *is* this mentor/mentee bond that she is forcing onto him because she doesn't want him to end up like her and bc she feels like she's the only one who cares. I'm not justifying her actions but people are misunderstanding her motives.

*spoiler alert warning* For everyone deterred to watch the movie because of the perceived pedophelia from the trailer and comments, I have watched it and do not believe that to be the case. The story is about a middle aged kindergarten teacher who is going through a midlife identity crisis. She discovers one of her students is a once in a generation savant in the discipline of poetry, which she happens to identify with as her own passion. This leads her on a path to go to any length to have the boy’s talent discovered, which ultimately crosses a line but not in a sexually inappropriate way. The film covers many themes but I believe the greatest one is the loss of curiosity and interest in physical art. It’s brilliant and the film ends with an understanding of each character, none of which are bad people, they’re just normal people, except the boy who is a genius.

Okay--I love a good thriller (especially one with a chick who's slightly off her rocker). And I love me some Maggie! This is definitely up my alley...

Our culture is SOOOO violent and soul crushing to our young that a movie mirroring back to us, just how desperate teachers may feel in their commitment to nourish the whole creative child. WHO understands this, if (you) were born in the 1980s and later?!! No one in their early thirties or younger knows what a free childhood is like. While not perfect, Boomers, by-in-large, grew up with recess, pretend, and unstructured time with peers in their own neighborhoods...

I get what she was trying to do but it was just a very bizarre and creepy way of doing it. It was an amazing movie though.. Finally something with a meaning that comes out of Hollywood in awhile.. great story !
