If Disney can make Victor Hugo suitable for kids then its possible for the King and I. I think it all comes down to writing.

One thing I also noticed about this film is that there were a few animation flubs here and there. Like during the 'Getting to Know You' scene, there is a spot where Ann notices that the youngest princess is missing only to find her in a house with another girl her age. The problem? A moment before, you can actually SEE the youngest child with Ann and she is NOT missing even though Ann clearly is concerned that she is missing. It was weird but it is kinda funny.

Hey when you mentioned the people who made this movie you didn't bring up Rankin Bass which the Nostalgia Critic pointed out. Yes the same Rankin Bass that made such holiday classics such as Rudolph: The Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town plus the animated Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies. I didn't know they were still in existence in 1999.

It was an OK movie to me as a kid even now. just badly written for a King and I screenplay when you add in the magical evil wizard. Beautiful animations, smooth and everything. Just wish there was a little more research for Thailand during that time because the 1500s and back they didn't exactly dress like that. Hairstyles weren't exactly high ponytails and buns either.

God in Heaven, what a travesty. From what I can see, when this movie sticks close to the original, it can be rather good. But the changes...ai-yi-yi. Why did they need to do all this in the first place? There's no problem at all with showing the original to (slightly older) kids...a sad ending, sure, but it can maybe engender a little discussion between parents and kids! (Do you think the King was wrong to do what he did, could Anna have gone about it better, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.)
