I feel like one of the biggest problems with the NBA is it it punishes teams for taking incremental steps to improve. You talk about it with the kings and to a lesser extent with the bulls, if you’re good, but not a title contender then you pretty much have to just blow it up and get as awful as you can for a few years. My suggestion is to replace the lottery with a single elimination tournament to decide the top 4 pick. (Winner gets 1, runner up 2, winner of consolation game 3, loser of consolation 4) It’d give teams a reason to try to be as good as possible even if they’re not title contenders. And then teams like this can either take good young talent, or have a more valuable trade piece. Either way at least there’s a path forward for them rather than, “welp guess we have to either throw a Hail Mary that mortgages the future or tear it all down and suck”

I think their issue is they don’t really have a true 3rd option or borderline elite 2-way player. Sabonis is great, but is easily neutralized come playoff time and he needs to develop more of a three point shot and some more dribbling skills. Otherwise his only value come playoff time is rebounding and occasionally being able to beat guys in the paint. But when a strong interior defender is present, he’s nowhere near as effective and that’s a problem for a max contract player. I wouldn’t mind if the Kings kept the roster together for 1 more year then reassess at the trade deadline, the Kings this year are a better team than last year despite the worse record (conference just got more competitive). Every player on the team got better defensively and they are a better rebounding team. Fox has gained a reliable 3pt shot, Sabonis has gotten a little more versatile around the rim, and Keegan added a midrange shot and started driving to the rim more.

Markkanen solves a lot of their issues at the 4 since he can both play solid defense and be a very efficient off ball player and if I'm them I'd rather trade Keegan Murray for him from a timeline perspective and assume you'll be able to re-sign him. Maybe if they want a lower cost option Alex Caruso would be a decent option at the 2 spot, but either way I think Keegan Murray probably needs to be traded if an opportunity like Markkanen comes onto the table.

The Kings had the 15th ranked offense, and the 14th ranked defense. So they aren't that defensively challenged, and the issues they do have on D have nothing to do with Sabonis: -they had the 10th best defensive 2p FG% -they gave up the 7th fewest shots at the rim -they led the league in defensive rebounding percentage -they gave up the 3rd fewest points (and the 7th-lowest FG%) against opposing centers Defensively, the glaring problem is on the perimeter: the Kings gave up the 2nd-worst opponent 3pt% (38.7%, behind only Utah's 39.5%). I don't care who you have at center - Rudy Gobert doesn't solve the Kings' defensive woes on the perimeter. I understand a big-time rim protector can empower perimeter players to overplay shooters, but the issue for the Kings was simply lack of effort and lack of following through on close-outs. Coach Mike Brown voiced a number of complaints throughout the season about the roster failing to execute the team's defensive scheme on the perimeter, and about guys failing to close out. Other than that, the Kings just simply lacked firepower. They need to have another guy who can reliably score 20 if we tell him, "We need 20 from you tonight, here's the ball."

The defense problem WAS BARNES. Been saying this all season last year. With your point, they solve both trading Barnes out for DeRozan. Barnes became a defensive liability last season vs the season prior. Then add the fact Barnes production regressed. Still though Kings were better and the end of season fall was because they lost floor spacing and scoring outside of Fox and Sabonis from Huerter and Monk. Kings has no issues playing OKC, Wolves, Mavs and Denver when healthy. As a matter of fact when both teams are healthy Kings beat these top teams. The issue was when they faced athletic wings, they struggled, WHY?!! BARNES. When the year prior they didn't struggle as much vs athletic wings.
@iankinzel
2 ай бұрын
@@blowc1612 I think there's something to that, and I do agree that DeRozan is an improvement over Barnes defensively. At the same time, from what I saw of Kings games, Kevin Huerter was arguably an even bigger problem. There's a reason Mike Brown kept trying to experiment with anything and everything, even having Huerter coming off the bench behind Chris Duarte for a hot minute there. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Barnes is a good defender, and I also don't think he ever paired up well with Fox defensively. But it seems to me like we still have to deal with Huerter's defensive issues - his lack of length, his struggles executing MB's defensive scheme etc. Again, I agree that moving past Barnes is a step forward, but defensively, we're still working our way out of the woods IMO. Can't wait for the season to start!

@@blowc1612 Barnes was there for the entirety of the teams' best stretch of defensive basketball after the All Star break, whereas Huerter was out injured for that stretch. After Huerter got hurt, the team's defensive rating improved to 110.6 for the final 15 games of the season - compared to 117.2 when Huerter played. That's the difference between 2nd in the league vs 23rd in the league. Again, there's a reason he was in and out of the rotation so much last season - Mike Brown was frustrated with his defensive execution. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we managed to move on from Barnes with a better player. But for whatever reason, people seem to give Huerter a pass for the issues or worse because he was playing next to Barnes. Now that Barnes is out, Huerter has to have a bounceback season if he doesn't want to turn into the next Barnes.

Going from 28th def rtg to 15th def rtg end of year means they were a top 5-8 defensive team to finish the year. No, keegan is not a decent defender. Defense finished top half of the league and was one of the best down the stretch but that didn't necessarily lead to wins. One could argue that the reason they weren't as good in a better Western Conference was their offense was inconsistent. They weren't the Kings of last season as far as their offensive abilities. In my humble opinion, first priority is to hopefully re-sign Malik Monk and add another dynamic creator/scorer. And I agree adding a backup center to upgrade off of Alex Len would be great. But I will say we got the most out of Len and I thought he did excellent work down the stretch. Murray will have to take another couple of steps forward and the defense needs to be there the entire season. Go Kings!!

They have the decision to make with the 13th pick, do they do for a backup 5 in Kel'el Ware, or do they go with a replacement for Monk with a scorer like Jared McCain. Are they looking for a defensive wing? The best fit for their scheme is Dalton Knecht, but it will likely mean trading up. The other route is to trade the pick with some salary and a package around Mitchell and Barnes for Kuzma (or someone similar). I think they have an opportunity to make a move for Donovan Mitchell or something simple like Wiggins but I think the move is move up in the draft for a wing they like to be the Barnes upgrade or a high level scorer at the 3 or defender at the 4/5

Try to trade Barnes, Huerter Duarte and Sasha with 3 1's for Lauri and resign Monk. Lyles, Davion, and Ellis can be the second unit. Outscore everyone.

As a wolves fan, the kings kinda remind me of the 2020 wolves. Ik it sounds weird but a lot of their players (like the wolves the ) were 1 way players. They either play only offense or only defense. The problem is a lot of that gets exposed in the playoffs. You can have a few of those guys, but too many is a recipe for failure

We need a dunking expert at the wing like Aaron Gordon or Bron, I think if we had a big guy that can bully his way to the rim at will this team would be alot harder to stop. Keegan is just too hesitant in that area I think. I think we need to play Keegan at the 2 honestly.

They need a wing defender like OG Anunoby or Jaden Mcdaniels, resigning Harrison Barnes was a huge mistake. They have Keegan Murray picking up the defensive assignments, you can’t get away with that all the time ESPECIALLY in the West

RESIGN Monk. Trade Barnes. SIGN DeMar in FA. Then improve the bench. 🤷♂️

The Kings can only offer Monk 4/$78 million. It feels like someone else is gonna give him the bag and he's gone. Sadly it feels like the Kings are either stuck or are gonna regress. Side note this pick to Atlanta is lottery protected so the Kings are going to keep their pick this year unless Atlanta wants to re-negotiate. The pick is so heavily protected right now Sac can't trade a lot of their firsts.

Dejonte Murray would be a mistake for the Kings. Not to say anything about his talent. Insanely talented. The worry would be what the problem is in Atlanta. 2 guards who just don't work well together. Fox is a better defender than Trae Young of course, but it would be a worry. If I am the Kings... I am looking at SF to upgrade. Harrison Barnes and Kevin Huerter with a pick or two in a trade and a young player on the bench right now...make a move to upgrade so they have that guy who makes a difference. Then make some tweeks around the margines and bring back Monk and make him the starting SG because he and Fox make a hell of an impact as a guard tandem. If they resign Monk, then make the trade, it would be an easy enough way to upgrade the roster. Maybe making a trade for Brandon Ingram. Not sure if the Pelicans would go for it or not, but worth entertaining. While Javale McGee and Alex Len might both be limited in what they can do as backups to Sabonis, one can do a lot worse than those two as well. I hope that Monte McNair and Mike Brown are sitting and talking and trying to figure out how to take the team to the next level. Because it would be nice to see them in contention next season. I hope they are trying to figure out Mike Brown's next contract as well. Because he has if I am not mistaken, won more games in 2 years than any other Kings coach in the last 18 years in their sqme time period. So, he already has brought this team to a new level so they aren't a laughing stock. Now it is just getting that guy who takes them from good to great. I don't know if Ingram is the right guy or not. I do know they need to make a move though. They don't want to end up going backwards next season and miss the play in and playoffs. They need to get back into that top 3 or 4 seed range. It is possible. They need to be a 50-55 win team next season. Otherwise they will probably see Fox and Sabonis asking for trades next summer. At some point, something will have to give. Just the nature of the NBA.

As good as a defender mitchell is . Hes also a liablity do to his size. Pelicans are 6-0 against them and it shows that they cant handle the length of that pels roster. Sabonis is a true 4 that plays like a 5 . They need a solid 5 to help take the load off sabonis with help on boards and defending. Hope monte makes a move .

They need to go after Markkanen and/or Clarkson. And I know people are going to be upset when I say this, but it's time for Mike Brown to go, yes, he turned the franchise around and that's great, but this is what happens with his teams every time. He comes in and gets them to play better defense, so their record improves from where it was, but then they quickly plateau and then never improve from there. He is not a good X&O's coach (there is a reason when he isn't a head coach he is hired as an 'assistant' defense-coach). I know pick and roll basketball is the preferred style played today, but the Kings need to get some motion going in the half-court (it just turns into a 1 on 1 game), they struggle when they aren't hitting threes.

This is crazy.. The kings have a defense problem.. Defense is about preparation. the kings almost beat the Celtics near the end of the season and beat every top notch team in the league except Huston and New Orleans.. The kings also lost to some of the worst team to..I would say caution about getting into trades that gut the bench, give up first round talent and get old wore out players and cost too much.. I say use the draft and free agency..
