There's an old axiom in the music business, that says "you get ten years to work on your first album, and ten months on your second". They even have a name for it - "the sophomore jinx". People can think what they like - but I say this song is great. The Knack was a victim of their own gigantic success on their first album. They set the bar so high that a come-down was almost inevitable. Certainly many bands over the years had no sophomore let-down whatsoever (The Cars, Van Halen, etc. etc.) But a lot of bands did. While some of their songs after "Get the Knack" were great, they were the exception. I'll always remember how great that first album was - top notch!

While I agree with your sentiment, the Knack ultimately revealed that both their first two albums had been writtne before they even got a recording contract, and there was talk the first album would be a double album.

So actually the second album could have been the first album. As everything was written , Also everybody knew but the record company that My Sharona was going to be number 1 , but they didn’t think so, how many record executives get it wrong .. seems like a lot of them ...The funniest thing I heard in the band world , is when the Canadian band Rush got together , there manager wanted Geddy Lee out of the band , so he left ..then they realized..oops...lol

@@Ricken2022 Perhaps if 'Baby Talks Dirty' had come our before 'My Sharona' things might have been slightly different for the band. And if 'I Want Ya' had come out before 'Good Girls Don't'...

It is a crying shame this did not get a better plugging and air play in the UK rather than My Sharona. Even though that was a classic hit. I much prefer this. I have to admit.

They needed another hit so they tried taking the riff to "My Sharona" and, basically, playing it backwards. Proof that Hebephilia is not a long-term career choice.

There's a similarity to the main hook in my Sharona during this song - but the rest of the song is very, very different. it's a good song in its own right.

it is still better than listening to emineme emema or what ever - for 80s music I approve it. I am more of a 70s Stones kind of chick but this reminds me of a time in my life when it was before Obama fucked up the world. and for that matter, the pre obama shit with a damn cell phone and tV everywhere and cameras watching you do everything but wipe your ass.

I agree, this was 100% an effort to recapture "My Sharona," and it was obvious at the time. It came off as sad, and goodnight Irene. Sad, too, because these cats were talented.

Yeah the guitar riff is kinda like Sharona but this one has WAY MORE ENERGY. The problem was that Sharona was played on radio SO F-ING MUCH that people were not into a similar guitar riff. Ya know it's funny because Chuck Berry used the Same rhythmic sounds on his records and everyone still loved his songs. Then again, the circumstances were quite different because HE was one of the Inventors of Rock & Roll during its very inception, wiping older acts like Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney off the charts and recreating a new market from adults and into the new marketing to teenagers. By the time the Knack came along, most people recognized their Beatle influences. They were not pioneers but a lot of people loved/love their first album. It has a lot of good songs which is more than you can say for a lot of other albums.

It was the dirty edge that pushed the Knack to the top with their first album. Once they ventured into the S&M stuff, however, they’d gone too far-and Doug Fieger’s ego started outstripping his talent.

This is the song where Fieger blew The Knack off. They already had great instrumentals, but the nature of their lyrics is far too degrading to outweigh.

I always read that baby talks dirty was a my sharona’s copy!!! i don’t agree. Its a typical the knack sound of Course but its a different song. h such an extraordinary success as the first single I am sure that any other song would have been criticized anyway. instead I think baby talks dirty was a beautiful hit after my Sharona and if people hadn't put a gun pointed at their head and massacred them all they would have gone a very long way
