Fact: The biggest "Kontakt-Killer" is Native Instruments. Other companies don't even come close. :D That being said, Kontakt is still a beast, beyond its increasingly toylike userinterface. This Audiomodern-Sampler is faaaar away from offering the same depth Kontakt offers. FAR away, despite the nice MPE support.

@@blakecasimirNo, I mean that I personally abandoned it :( I know DS was/is a nice project, but in my opinion, the author didn’t update or evolve the software and the documentation (at least last year, for a long time), which led to frustration for me as a developer. That's why I abandoned it especially when it comes to make my personal libraries.

If UVI opened up the platform so that you didn’t have to pay to create and publish a library, they could make a run at Kontakt. It’s gotten better now that they have quite a few libraries, but there are thousands for Kontakt. Falcon does trump Kontakt for features for sure though.

I love Audiomodern plugins, but I wouldn't call Soundbox a "Kontakt killer" just yet. The most glaring issue is the lack of round-robins, but there are tons of other stuff they would need to change as well for it to be competitive with Kontakt. The real "Kontakt killer" was released long ago: UVI Falcon. It's unfortunately even more expensive and less open for third-party library developers. Decent Sampler is still the best alternative if you want something cheaper than Kontakt.

@@solyarisoftware true. It's a shame that David hasn't made DS open-source for people to continue working on it and make forks of it. It's also a shame that the Surge team couldn't keep up the work on Shortcircuit. It could have become the best free open-source alternative to Kontakt, but there was just too much work that had to be done to get it in working order, and the team already have their hands full with developing the amazing Surge synth and all of the smaller plugins around it. I still hope we one day get to see a proper free alternative to Kontakt.

I’m using most NI products since the Intakt era (yes, I’m old) I think Kontakt is at the moment still the industry standard. I’m also using Decent sampler and got the Soundbox bundle. Soundbox is far superior than DS, it is simply not comparable. Features and workflow is what sets it apart. What intrigues me is that Soundbox has just been released, I can only expect it gets better as it grows and I hope they add round robins and more effects on the main engine.

For me Kontakt was killed by Steinberg's Halion 7. I never thought I'd say that, but definitely, it is. Behringer sounds great, but the documented build quality issues of Crave etc. would put me off. Behringer's perennial problem has always been build quality, consistency and attention to detail and I'm not sure they've conquered that, even after all these years.

I agree with REAPER, of course :-) But DS feels too simple and has some bugs. The only way I see a future for it is if the author releases it as open-source, allowing the community to help it evolve. Otherwise... When it comes to sound design and personal projects, I’d go with ReaSampler 5000 in REAPER or stick to the free TX16Wx. However, perhaps the best option, especially for synth-related work, is the TAL Sampler, which is reasonably priced.

@@solyarisoftware true. For a while decent sampler would crash my projects but the more recent updates have been totally smooth for me. Venus theroy puts out some really interesting for it. Tal sampler is my real secret cheat code that ppl don't know about, I've done some crazy stuff with it. Its not really made for multi sampled instruments though. Tal drum is dope too, I just wish it was easier to chop. I mostly use hardware, but if I could get a vst in Linux that just let you do a lazy chop and put your chops across pads easily and do some basic editing to pad groups I'll be happy.
