"Perhaps it is possible to forget about gaming if you're given enough other stimulation" That's part of the problem. Most of my students here in Korea live a life of home, school, study room, home, repeat. 6 days a week. 15 hours a day. I would be addicted to my phone too. Most of my students, as young as 10 buy their own dinner because their parents are workaholics and don't get home until after midnight. I totally understand the kid who said he feels anxious when he's alone. The "camp" looks fun but it is like a band-aid that is going to be ripped off again once they leave exposing the underlying issues once again.

This. There are always options other than phones. The reason why there are lots of internet "addicts" is because it's simply the easiest option. If they return to they everyday lives, they'll probably return to their habits. From this video, it's fairly obvious that most of the "addicts" in this video are not even addicts (other than one guy). i remember reading a blog where a guy went without technology for 1 year. In the end, he had some benefits in the beginning, but at the end he felt lonely, because he realized online is where the people are now, and if you're not in that world you're alone outside and it's difficult to be fully immersed socially. That was the saddest thing to me, that there is almost a majority population of people who are not fully present without their phones or computers even if somebody decides to quit to an extreme degree to regain their senses in the present moment
@rotte5537

This is what I have experienced as well. I managed to cut out all social media for a few months and well... I only felt a lot more lonely instead of fulfilled, even though I tried to talk to people a lot more and tried to go out more. Maybe I did something wrong within all of that, but I still don't know what that might have been.

@@rotte5537 I think we live in an age where technology IS our life now. We can't live without it anymore. @Richard Sejour It was a mixed bag really. Sometimes I did get along with my teammates or the people I met through sports but never on a deeper level than just acquaintances or I just couldn't at all get along with them which led to a few moments where I would be alone in the changing room for an example and just feel extremely lonely all of a sudden. I still don't know exactly why those moments stuck with me for so much time, but I still sometimes randomly remember them. I can't really 100% make out why I suck so much at socializing nowadays in comparison to when I was younger, where I would be more of a "social butterfly". I had a lot of "friends" but still only very few meaningful relationships, though in comparison to now I don't really have any of those deeper connections anymore. I am able to hold casual conversations, some may lead to awkward silence though I'd say most go well but it never leads to more. It all stays superficial for some reason and I really don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is normal or whatever.

In the end, what people need is a goal and a sense of progress where you're working your way up. In games, every bit of effort will translate to visible progress. In real life, not always, especially for those without hope, lost or suffering from depression. Addiction feeds off despair and hopelessness, it is usually just a sign of deeper issues rather than the problem itself. I've been there, and I'm lucky to get out. There were times where I felt like everything I could possibly do in real life is pointless anyway, games were more attractive as I could visibly watch myself improving and getting real results, which gives much more satisfaction. +slamdunkd12345 Korea is a VERY controlled society. Western world teaches people to be individuals. Korean society (generally) teaches people to strive together for a common goal. To "join the school of fish and go with the flow". Citizens are given a set of goals and expectations and are under intense pressure to reach them. Most students go to school 13-14 hours a day, study for 3-6 a night and go to school 6 days a week. When it's time for college there is so much testing that I personally know of people that have committed suicide under the pressure or have been beaten by their parents for getting low scores. After all of this the test practically picks your major and your college for you. Which is devastating enough. Low college means family embarrassment....I could go on but I will stop here. Don't get me wrong Korea is a wonderful country to live in but there are many underlying issues that are damaging this youngest generation. It's easy to see the surface problems but more difficult to look deeper and see the underlying causes.

+ILykToDoDuhDrifting There is a big difference between health obsession & unhealth obsession. If it ruins your life, you need to change. On a grander scale it depends which you value the most, enjoying your time on earth or having something to be remember for after you die. (It is of course possible to do both, striking the right balance is difficult.) If you are obsessed with something, you have to reply on people to support you, look at Einstein, without his wife he probably would have starved to death. I have seen extremes of obsession & none of them were pretty, it was distressing to witness & none of the people consumed were happy.

Like any form of addition, it's just a facade for what's truely wrong in a person's life. I too was highly addicted to gaming. It was my form of release and escape from life. I grew up in a foreign land and parents were always busy with work. I didn't have many friends and I was bullied growing up. Games was the only place I felt accepted and wanted. They filled me with cheap thrills and fake accomplishments, and for a time it was my only reason for waking up at all. Fortunately, today, I've found my calling and goals to work towards. Gaming is purely for time wasting as I don't have any urge to play. Luckily, I grew out of it and no longer feel the same sense of accomplishment as I did in the past. I know my priorities now and know the value of time. I fear for the boys future in this video. From watching other SK documentaries, they have a long and rough life ahead of them.

I remember back in the early 2000's where my friends' parents would send us out to play because we were gaming for 2 hours. We played for an hour and spent the rest of the day sitting down doing nothing. There is nothing wrong with electronics as long as you include an active lifestyle with it. It's the future -- we need to accept that these devices are going to be part of our lives for...well, pretty much the rest of the human race's existence.

Imagine paying thousands of dollars a month for computer gaming therapy instead of just taking you're kids on a hike for free or signing them up for after school and weekend programs or simply just taking their computer and phone away which is also free. My parents worked till 9-10 at night until I was 15 while they were building a business, I had access to a computer but I chose to spend my time outside with friends and even by myself a lot. Dogs or any sort of pet honestly are a great way to keep your kid occupied and responsible. Hell, you could even tell them to get their own job imagine that!?

Every now and then i stop playing Games for quite a while, yet i always return to them, because they are they are the most comfortable and easy way of stress relief. This programm shows the kids a way to find stress relief. But its all planned out and they have to do nothing for it. In reality they will face the choice between staying in their house or having to get active by themselves. The most of these kids will choose the easy way again...

You can't just go from straight nonstop gaming to no gaming at all. The people there will experience withdrawal the same way smokers and other addicts do. You have to start from baby steps like playing for only a few hours a day. Eventually, it can lead to only gaming for 1 or 2 hours a day. It shouldn't be forced on them, but they need to know that they have the option to change. As someone who is obsessed with video games myself, being able to play video-games was an escape for me due to my terrible childhood. I have grown up and currently 23 and still play pretty often but balance it between other things like work and gym. Very interesting documentary.

in all fairness, because of their obsession, Korea has produced some of the best esport players in the world in several different games. Those players are paid pretty well as well, less successful ones also have ways of earning income through streaming, producing contents and coaching. I mean, I understand that it's more likely than not that they will not make lots of money but no body seems to condemn starving artist, poor musicians or chess players, who face similar career prospect. How come people who are passionate about esport get so much hate?

I understand the importance of neuro-science, but there are somethings that are learned through experience. People do not realize that there is an entire generation of humans on this planet who literally can't fathom a world before cell phones. As in these people physically were never here to witness it. In addition to that, these boys are all in their early teen years. The amount of emotional learning they receive by being cooped up with a group of their peers is astonishingly significant. I'm not saying that many of them did not return back to online gaming, rather they now have a physical memory they can reference for comparison when making the mental decision of how they want to regulate their game time. This approach seems a lot better than playing around with the brain in a dark room and doping up kids on medication.

I don't think video games are necessarily the problem. They are a symptom of a diseased society where parents aren't home due to their work and kids cannot step outside to breathe due to their own schoolwork. Video games are an escape, a world where kids don't have to think about how much their parents actually love them or how their teachers are assholes or how much they have work. They are restricted in real life so they want to escape to a world where they can fly free. But this world isn't real. I'm a gamer myself and I hate it when people have knee-jerk reactions to problems like these by saying "video games are evil", "video games are bad for children". Video game addictions spawn from terrible parenting(the kids turn to games instead of their parents for support) and a disgusting amount of work(there is so much work the kids don't even feel like trying because they feel like they can't compete). But this is a huge problem and requires a societal change. For now however, I think it's important to educate that gaming isn't the only thing you can do in your life. It's crazy how much addicts can play(20 hours a day wtf), even pro gamers, people are payed to be the best of the best usually play 12-14 hours a day. It's insane how these kids who lack the mental fortitude of a pro can play equal or more than them. And even pro players balance their schedules. They get up, they eat regular meals, they socialize, they exercise and pursue other hobbies. Faker, the man who is considered to be the greatest League of Legends player of all time says that he always tries to sleep at least 8 hours(although he usually clocks in at 7 and 1/2). These kids play for 12 hours straight with basically no meals, no getting up, and not talking to anyone. That isn't a game anymore, that's a night mare. This isn't right. There needs to be better education programs that get kids to do something other than games. They don't have to quit games forever, they have to learn to do something else as well.

I feel sad cause internet addiction is particularly hard to overcome, if you're an alcoholic or a drugaddict you're told to avoid the affliction and with time you can, but with the internet you can't leave it forever, jobs use the internet as does school even just buying groceries may involve the web, its honestly unavoidable in todays world. Like right now i spend 12 hrs minimum online a day as a result of online classes & no ability to leave my home so the internet iis where i have to spend time, i cant imagine these guys or other kids like them being able to overcome the temptation or need in a situation like this.

for all the people talking about there is plenty of other stuff to do and even in this doc they forget they have to go home at some point It's not always easy to find fun in life. Not everyone has a lot of friends next door to spend evenings with, not everyone like's studying, not everyone can choose the channel on the tv, not everyone has a ball and a wall to play with, not everyone like's chess and if u do u play it on a computer because if u had friends to play with they wouldn't be there most likely. And look and behold chess is a game and their are other games to play too, not everyone cares for developing himself in a meaning full way and books can be just as addictive as games it's just more accepted. And my god not everyone has a nice supportive family. It can be very calming to just stare at a screen and forget the world around u. Or it can be a nice outlet to get your competitive cravings going. it's just like everything in life (alcohol, love, work, food, etc.) how much until u start to lose yourself becomes a question when it becomes a problem.

I think they keep the Dopamine level high for the early days, and gradually decrease it as time passes When I play games too much, all though it increased my dopamine level, it makes me depressed and a makes me feel a little lonely So, I take a day without playing games and won't even touch my laptop. I think that brings down my average dopamine level and makes me wanna play fewer games. After that, I play games for fewer hours and enjoy the real world more

Hey, gotta give them props. Despite being the nerdiest of the nerdiest, they keep up their appearances. Then again, places in asia have a different culture placing education above popularity. However it also has it's own drawbacks, if you fail to get into the top universities, you're considered somewhat of a failure and if you don't get into a university at all, you may as well consider suicide or start growing crops... However now Gaming has been introduced, so there's that haha.

I think ppl need to just one day realize addiction doesn't matter about the substance it is the person. I was addicted to video games as a kid and my parents thought it would ruin my life hence grounding me from it and turning off my internet etc etc. I then grew up and after highschool some events led to another and im now a recovering heroin addict.. Thankfully surviving 2 overdoses. I think people have addictive personalities and will get addicted to anything and i mean ANYTHING. People are constantly figuring out what is more addictive, what is least addictive, what is bad or good. Everything is good, and everything is bad. People and their personalities will decide that and it will never change. I think everything should be allowed and legal including drugs, and there should be support and groups to help people who do unfortunately end up with bad habits. Banning/regulating or changing rules just wont work. Look at drugs for example the war on drugs somehow managed to produce MORE addicts and with the added criminals on top of it.

Okay, first off, 1 to 2 hours for any gamer is an extremely short time to play video games. Many adults can't understand this concept at all, but what I'm really trying to say is that it's not controlling how "long" you play, but more of how you can balance our your life. If you find way by doing your schoolwork and then be able to play your games after your work in finished, it honestly shouldn't be a problem. These kids just need to learn how to balance their lives, 1 or 2 hours is literally 1 or 2 matches of most games anyway. I play games ALL the time, but I am also an honor student and am looking to go to college. I have a 3.9 GPA in highschool and I have learned how to balance the two.
