everything you said about porzingis' weaknesses was already true for Rob and Al, but they managed to hold their own as a team defensively. At least porzingis combines their strengths, actually does better as a pick and roll defender and hasn't lost a step like Al. Their defense that "carried" them to the finals was completely eviscerated by the warriors, wouldn't say they're that much different now. ANY celtics fan can tell you that while Smart was their best passer, he was an unremarkable PG due to his poor decision making and his inability to create for himself consistently. They don't need one person to pass, they need to get better at moving the ball as a team, especially Tatum and Brown. Like you mentioned, adding porzingis as a post passer achieves a similar objective, but ultimately its going to come down to their best players learning to swing the ball earlier.

The Celtics' defense wasn't obliterated by the Warriors. The Warriors barely managed over 100 ppg. The problem was the offense. They need an off-the-dribble creator, not a big man scorer. And Horford, despite "losing a step," is still far more mobile than Porzingis ever has been. Porzingis is a drop defender. Boston's defense is going to take a step back with the loss of Smart and Porzingis's lack of flexibility.

The warriors didn't score over 110 in that entire series, and that was with a ton of extra possessions off of turnovers. Would feel better about this trade if they had gotten tyus jones in the deal as well which they probably were targeting after the brogdon deal fell through. Cs perimeter defense was atrocious last season and Kristaps won't help in that regard, but maybe will help rim protection since Rob didn't move/jump nearly as well last season vs the year before. Losing smart overall hurts, because brogdon was bad on defense most of the season and was out of position a lot, where smart is more versatile and moves better than brogdon does. Getting another viable backup wing that is a defensive stopper/offensive rebounder would be huge, because Mazzulla didn't want to play hauser in the playoffs for some reason, so spelling the Jays with an elite defender and adding one more ball mover could put this roster over the top

Porzingis from the high post or the top of the key can run plays for both Tatum and Brown. He did it all the time with Beal and Kuzma in Washington. On top of that, his defense is better than you are giving him credit for. While it isn’t his primary strength, Porzingis has the sheer length to contest perimeter shooters off the switch at an above-average level. He’s also extremely adept in drop coverage, holding the midrange and driving lanes hostage with the ability to step up or back to contest other shots. The fit with Williams is awkward, but not to the level implied here. He played fine alongside Taj Gibson and Daniel Gafford, who also aren’t super mobile. Also, the comparison to Dallas isn’t good imo because Jason Kidd ran very few sets for Porzingis and tried to take him away from the action in favor of Luka. He was made to play like he was Davis Bertans. I enjoy the idea of more breakdown/play-by-play stuff, though. Some definite good points, but a bit overblown.

If those are the worst negatives than I think the C’s can live with that. Kristaps was serviceable last year on defense, was one of the top centers in P&R defense. They’ve been playing drop coverage for the most part anyway I don’t think that changes this season. Celtics just need to load manage the crap out of Rob, Al, and Porzingis, each should probably play around 60, no more than 65, games next season. Smart was a tough loss, was probably their best “PG” but he was sloppy with the ball, too many turnovers. White should fill in for Smart pretty nicely, less turnover prone and was second team All-Defense last year. White got barely any burn in 4th quarters or at the end of games which was pretty wild since he was their 3rd best player. Brogdon situation might be a little weird since he was pretty much traded until the Clippers backed out last minute. I think he’s professional enough to understand that the NBA is a business. He kinda did it to himself by being part of the negotiations of the new CBA. But, I expect him to make a leap from year 1 to 2 with the Celtics just like White did. Unless, Brad really does have a solid trade and he’s not there before the season starts. Lastly, Mazzulla has a year under his belt and his own coaching staff. I mean he went from the second row the HC chair right before media day, lost two top assistants in Hardy and Stoudamire and they didn’t hire anyone of significance to help ease the pressure. Cassell is a veteran coach that can help immensely and Charles Lee should help tighten up their defense.

With all due respect you hava few key misunderstandings: 1. You misunderstand Rob Williams' defense. Rob even under Ime Udoka was at his best not at his best as a traditional rim defender, he was a roaming help defender at the rim. Thats why the double big lineups worked. Porzingis is a drop defense rim degender as you mentioned and now he will have Rob Williams as hos help defender whixh means he can afford to be more aggressive on defense. 2. Smart was the best passer but not the best playmaker as he often made ridiculous mistakes and was one of the worst starting PG's in the league in transition. He also lacked the respect from defenders thus didn't have the gravity to draw defenders to him to create open shots for others 3. Tatum was a much better playmaker last year than anyone else on the team. There is a reason the Celtics went to him in clutch situations last year and while he took big strides giving him Porzingis which will give him multiple options of plays to run on offense such as Pick and Rolls and big man with an efficient post game to just dump the ball to if a play breaks down (as happened multiple times last season) should help him even more. 4. Injuries yes are a concern but they now have three bigs they can turns giving days off to in order to load manage

Your concerns are head scratching. Porzingis has an elite game outside and inside the paint...and continues to improve. The NBA tracking data is clear on that. Defensively, he was one of the best rim protectors and shot blockers in the league. May be you should watch the March 29th game between Washington and Boston. He was option 1 for Washington scoring 32, 13 rebounds, 6 assists plus more. He was unstoppable. In terms of showcasing his skills...Boston needs to speed up the game and move the ball. His health is just fine. I don't hear other teams constantly talking trash about their players health. Anthony Davis has not played a full season due to injuries since coming to the NBA; K Leonard has missed more games since his San Antonio injury than most other players; let's not overlook J Embeid, P George, Zion, and a long list of others. It is about time that folks like you see the glass half full. This narrative is frankly boring.

The biggest problem was Mazzu didn't have a clue who to play or when. I know he was thrown into the fire on short notice so he better have figured out players and rotations this year. Honestly the switching everything defense did not work because teams were getting wide open shots way too much. This defense doesn't allow PP, SamH, Kornet, Muscala that's gone now to get any real chance of playing in this system. The C's have very good defensive players so they still should be good. Please build a real offense, Seven years of the same bs jacking up shots from three's and outside. Get some inside game, Ball movement, cuts. RW, AL, JT, start now on post play instead of only working on 3's. RW shoot the dmn ball, get some inside game. Same game four years later😂. A lot to work on to get better.

They lose arguably their best passer with Smart. And while I get wanting to address their longterm big man needs, is a guy with Porzingis's health concerns really the answer? I don't think so, especially not at the money he earns. And until Horford ages out, the fit is really awkward. I also think this negatively impacts their defense. You lost a DPOY in Smart. You replace him with a big man who only excels in drop coverage. Also, while he was great defensively in Washington, he wasn't in Dallas.

Can't run the same switch everything defense without smart anymore, and it was clear that Rob wasn't close to the same athletically for most of the season last year. With Horford also getting killed on switches in the playoffs against smaller quicker players (but still overall defending bigs like embiid and bam very well), it doesn't seem like they will be able to run the same system, and may just have Porzingis sitting back in the paint and play more man on the perimeter. Brogdon also wasn't a good individual defender against guards and wings last year, and watching the Cs play the laziest drop coverage ever since the finals has really cost them in big games where it feels like opposing teams can just walk into wide open uncontested jumpers that the Cs are willing to give up to them rather than try to make things difficult

The problem of KP is, that he is always injured. In Dallas when he played (at least for the most part) they here good, but for almost half of the time he was on the bench...

Porzingis It's a better player than Al in this point of al's career. You need to get Younger at that position. Marcus smart was good But between him and brown, they turned over the ball so many times Now, one of these younger guys gotta step up And be a leader because they need someone Too lean on because they are mentally weak.

these takes were so fluffed with no backing. So two of our bigs arent proficcient on iso and PnR defense. You can say that with so many bigs. its the same thing where guards who are shorter than 6'3 are defensive liabilities. It's the NBA. If you know they arent good at those things, then the team knows and they adjust. Watching us fail last season because of certain things doesnt mean theyre gonna do it again the following season NO CRAP HES NOT GONNA BE LIKE HE WAS IN WASHINGTON. He's on the Celtics now. No one thinks hes coming in and puttting up 25/12 and 6. And then the last few minutes is just you reiterating the first half of the video. This is "I gotta put something out on youtube" content. Great click bait headline btw. Ill keep this receipt

Bro boosted everyone height by two inches lol. Rob and Al are 6’8. Tatum is also 6’8. Brown is 6’7 and Smart is only 6’3 on a good day. They may be similarly sized but they were also too small on the glass with two guys on the court who made spacing the floor almost impossible. Nobody was worried about Rob or Smart beating them with a jumper so that made looks for Tatum and Brown very difficult.

Brown isn't even 6'7 he's 6'6, Tatum might actually be closer to 6'9 along with Rob and Al who are all about the same height. Smart is probably actually 6'4 along with D White. It is more their bigs that aren't that tall but they were more reliant on their strength and physicality than their height last season

@@JaAr-iw5os league average is 36 percent. 35 percent is the highest he’s shot since his 4th season which was the year he was his most efficient on offense. He’s been downhill since. He’s a role player at best and is a scrub compared to most starting point guards and even some backup point guards.

People are exaggerating the value of the Celtics got in return for smart. People keep saying two first round picks which is only true in a pedantic sense. Celtics got one proper first-round pick, but then used their pic to move up five or six spots in the draft in 2023. Which they ended up trading back anyways from a few times. So really it was one first round pick and then a slight jump up in the draft which they flipped into a bunch of second round picks

Horrible take, obviously had an agenda to not go with the flow and be the antagonist. You completely discount the defensive prowess of White and Tatum and Brown, etc....now I know
