Its name comes from two words: Castrum, Castro - a village fortified by the Celtic race castrejo people who, after their nomadism for thousands of years on the plateaus, lived from hunting and fishing, and after grazing, settled on the hills to live there in community and defend themselves from the invading tribes, from five hundred years before Christ until the sixth century of the Christian era.
It has more than 40 places, distributed by the mild and the winters - which are the highest or the lowest places, where the people sheltered themselves from the intense cold of the harsh winters or the warmth brought by the unruly storms. This transhumance between settlements has created a road network of mainly bridges. The main food here was rye bread, potato, and some beans. They were trying to delay their stay in the soft woods until mid-December, as survival in the winters was difficult. In March they returned to Branda again to take care of the rye. In this video I try to show the main elements of this experience, which has now been adapted to the reality of tourism. Many of the soft ones have been converted to fixed or holiday villages, and the vast majority of wintering houses, when abandoned, have been partly converted into housing tourism.
