When I made this kind of skirt in the late sixties, we added a button hole in the belt to thread the tie through. It made the ties more secure.

I must be old....I've been reading the comments and giggle because it's one of the first skirts that I ever made back in the early 70's. They were so popular with stretch and sew, cut a tad different because they were circular but the wrap around concept was the skirt! Thanks for the reminder and I plan to sew one for my granddaughter!

wow, this is cool. its exactly the same as what we wear in the islands. This piece you call a lapa, we call an an ie (ee-ye) - short for ie lavalava. Its part of a two peice outfit we ladies wear called a puletasi. We dance in them and we go to church in them, we wear them to formal events and - well, to almost everything that involves the pacific culture. Thank you for sharing this :) -

So essentially your skirt portion is waist diameter X ~1.5, and then the belt is twice that. Then length is whatever your heart desires. So simple! Easy to adapt for all sizes :) Love it!

Wrap skirts always make me laugh. A friend of mine was wearing a wrap skirt made from a silky fabric at church one day. She was distributing communion when the knot holding the skirt came loose and the skirt slithered to the floor. She looked down, picked up the skirt, and in a very dignified manner exited the church to retie her skirt. May your lapa never fall!

Just finished my first one.... It's the first piece of clothing that I've ever sewn. Turned out pretty good. I guess all that quilting does convert into sewing skills. I'm giving it to my niece and her daughter. I'll let them fight over it until the next one is made. Thanks Rob for the inspiration and taking the fear out of making clothes with my sewing machine... it's not just for quilts anymore. :)
