The aircraft conversions are technically brilliant. However, how many people actually realize how incredibly dangerous an occupation flying fire bombers is? My most sincere thanks to the incredibly brave people that take on this very important role. For the most they are nameless and faceless to the majority of those benefiting from their skill and ability.

Yes the few 4 Martin Mars were bought to be converted to water bombers, but they weren’t the original water bombers. The original waters bombers were the Catalinas, converted to water bombing post war and used by both Quebec and France as the first water bombers users in the world.

Many commercial passenger and freight aircraft have been, and are re-purposd for aerial firefighting, and companies in (for instance) Alberta and British Columbia have whole fleets of these land-based machines. The limitation(s) of many of these planes changes their usefulness for certain kinds of fires. Although it's now largely forgotten, a number of other float planes and seaplanes were modified and tried for water dropping, or scooping and dropping. One of the first was the DHC-2 Beaver on modified floats. Another was the WWII "Canso" or PBY amphibian - quite a number of those were converted. Lessons were learned from all of the aircraft that were tried in the firefighting role. The Canadair was purpose built, from the very first CL-215 and incorporated a great deal of this experience. This does not mean land planes are not useful, because they certainly are. But the ability to deliver water to the fire, how fast and how much is a big consideration on many fires, which is why companies like AirSpray operate several aircraft types in their firefighting fleet. My hat's off to every one of these teams, and their ingenuity, equipment and dedication to getting the fire under control.

They never send enough of these to the larger fires. CARPET BOMB YOUR ENEMY! We are in a FIGHT with fire. Treat it as such and don't send only one or two of these planes, get some idle C-130s, C-17s and such, with bladders and a release system. Then send 16 of these to the fire. It takes ground personnel & resources too, but it would be much easier to get these fires out earlier as well, when they aren't so big and out of control. Would cost less than months-long fire fighting. 4 to 6 million compared to 30 million for a months-long fire here in 2020 (Pine Gulch Fire).

I am curious as to the video mentioning the Martin Mars and yet the video showed other aircraft, but not any clips of the actual Martin Mars. That aircraft is still in existence, but has now been retired. It is a magnificent aircraft and truly a marvel. Perhaps a bit more research and attention to accuracy would be beneficial when the narrator discussed a specific aircraft, but showed other aircraft instead that most likely confuse someone who was not familiar with the aircraft mentioned. I see it as misinformation.

The most efficient fire fighter aircraft is the Canadair. It is purpose built as a firefighter. It can scoop up water from almost any convenient place and can fly low and slow over the fire. Because it is prop driven it's takeoff run is very short and it's big wing area makes it very manoeuvrable. It can deliver more water in a day than any of the other aircraft you mention. 747s and DC 10s have an airport big enough to take them before returning to a fire while the CL 415 is working away. Not even the Beriev is as good as it.

The amphibious Water Bombers, like the CL 215, 415 and 515, (and the Russian amphibious jet powered monster) have much, much faster turn around times. They can reload from a nearby water source without stopping and be back on the fire within minutes- pretty much every other water bomber/air tanker has to return to a fairly well developed airport and refill via specialized equipment. Can easily take more than an hour or longer to deliver each load. They big boys are faster on route, and can deliver more water per drop - I guess each type has it's advantages. I'm in Northern Alberta (Canada) and we are currently dealing with the realities of major wildfires and limited resources...... (This video is pretty shitty... :)
