Unforgettable the end of the film 'The Dead', directed by John Huston. His daughter Anjelica at the stairs, listening to this song. Pure emotion and beauty. And the snow falling down outside.

Okay, there's more to this story than meets the eye. Lord Gregory (another name of the ballad) was not the scumbag he appears to be. He truly loved the girl. But he went off to sea for a period of time and did not know about the babe. When the girl made her plea at the manor entrance she was met by his mother (and in some versions his sister as well) who did not approve and feared for their inheritance. They told the girl that Gregory had gone to Scotland to seek a bride and that she should leave the babe with them and throw herself into the sea which, brokenhearted, she did. When Lord Gregory returned and discovered what they had done he was infuriated and disinherited them both and banished them from the estates forever. There are various versions that vary somewhat. One says he then died of a broken heart himself, another says she didn't throw herself into the sea but tried to follow him and died in a shipwreck, etc. But all seem to agree that he truly loved the girl and did not betray her.

In some versions the mother pretends to be Lord Gregory and refuses to believe that the girl is Fair Annie.
