I was one of the USCIS officers who interviewed the Vietnamese refugees in Manila in 2005. It was a memorable experience to be able to help my countrymen.

I was 12 years old when the boat people of Vietnam came to our shores in Zambales in the 70s. I can vividly remember those days because our school immediately sent us all students home to let our patents know and to get food and clothes for the Vietnamese brothers and sisters. Everyone in the town helped those distressed boat people. We all did what we can until they were taken by the govt agencies and were taken into a temporary resettlement or refugee center in Bataan. I am glad that this dark phase of Vietnamese history is over. These beautiful people dont deserved what they have gone through during that time.

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience, Mr.Pedro Vargas! It's great to know that you're from Zambales, where my boat arrived in August, 1989, too. The name of the village is Pundakit. We were warmly welcomed and kindly helped by people in the village and in town, where the elementary school located. I still remember some faces of good friend who approached and talked to me, gave me food, clothes, and even money to buy stamps so that I could send a letter to my parents in Vietnam that time, such as a principal of the elementary school in town (I forgot his name), Michele and Helen whom I lost contact after Pinatubo eruption, and Samuel whom I gave my only 5000 Dong bill for a souvenir. Pray that all of them are fine and in the good hand of God now!!!

Hi cooljeffrox! At the beginning, it's hard for them to be admitted because most of the schools needed the legal papers from the government. In fact, they're all considered "stateless" there; however, it's later recognized and helped by the Phils'gov. and majority of children were allowed schooling there. Fortunately, 99,9% of stateless children are now resettled in the U.S, Canada, Norway, Australia....They and their families are so grateful to the Philippines Government and Pinoy there for the kind heart and great support!

I got so many Vietnamese friends, specially when I work in the Silicon Valley in the Boom year. I believe the Silicon Valley will not be itself now because of these Vietnamese and Pilipino workforce. Thy are the forgotten heroes of California economy in the economic boom.

Thanks to martial law of President Marcos, the refugees from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were safe to live in the Philippines. Marcos created the Philippines Refugee Processing Center in Bataan and refugee camp in Palawan. About 400, 000 refugees were saved and took refuge in the Philippines from 1970s to 1980s. Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were invaded by communists. Philippines would have been attacked next, but 1972 martial law of Marcos stopped the communists invasion in the Philippines. www.unhcr.org/ph/11886-9wavesrefugees.html
