In this video, we capture the last coal train to ever run to a power station in the UK! Ratcliffe Power Station in Nottinghamshire is the final remaining coal operated power station in the UK which will be closing this year meaning there will be no more coal trains to power stations in the UK 28th June 2024!
Doing the honours of this historic train from Doncaster Up Decoy GBRF to Ratcliffe PS GBRF is GBRF Class 66 66781 carrying it's new name, Ratcliffe Power Station to mark the occasion, these nameplates were previously carried by 66770. The day before, 27th June the coal would be brought from Immingham to Doncaster hauled by 66784 after being imported from abroad.
We capture the train at Chesterfield where it makes a rare stop on platform 3 where a crew member would be picked up.
Coal trains have been operating to power stations since their creation in 1882 at Edison Electric Light Station in London, fast forward 142 years to 2024 and the very last one would run to Ratcliffe Power Station.
Coal trains have also been operating through Chesterfield since 1840 bringing 184 years of coal traffic through the area.
