Lukey The steam train that now operates as a tourist attraction, was originally a coal train that supplied the Red Cliffs Pumping Station. It began its work in 1924 and operated carting coal and briquettes till 1954.
It ran on a rail-line which crossed the Calder Highway at Erskine Ave. The line followed the edge of Quandong Park till it intersected with Fitzroy Ave. From there it ran beside the road and along Pumps Road to the Pumping Station.
After it’s working life ceased, it remained in Red Cliffs and became the feature at a couple of locations in the town area. In 1980’s it was restored and in 1990’s the working tourist attraction was developed.
The Red Cliffs Historical Steam Railway has a comprehensive history of their train Lukee, on their website.

Andrew Yip has provided this view of Lukee in operation at the Red Cliffs Historical Steam Railway during early 2012.
Lukee was built by Kerr Stuart & Company Ltd of Stoke-on-Trent, England (builders number 742 of 1901) to their "Skylark" design. Lukee was dispatched to India in 1901 before being returned to Kerr Stuart & Co. for rebuilding. It was subsequently delivered to Mt Zeehan Silver & Lead Mines, Zeehan, Tasmania in 1903. a
Lukee was sold in 1921 to the South Australian Government for use on the Cobdogla Tramway. It was resold in 1924 to the Victoria State Rivers & Water Supply Commission for use on the Red Cliffs Tramway, which linked the Red Cliffs pumping station to the Red Cliffs railway station. Here Lukee was finally retired from service in 1954.
Fortunately this interesting locomotive was saved for posterity and plinthed in a local Red Cliffs park. After many years of being plinthed, Lukee was restored to operation by the Red Cliffs Historical Steam Railway Inc. for use on their two kilometre section of the former 1600mm gauge Red Cliffs - Morkalla branch line, which has been converted to 610mm gauge for tourist train operation. The Red Cliffs Historical Steam Railway normally operates on the first Sunday of each month from 11am to 4.00pm and on Easter Saturday and the Sunday of the Queens Birthday long weekend.
Today Lukee is the only complete survivor of the 15 Kerr Stuart locos imported to Australia; a history of these Kerr Stuart locomotives is provided by John Buckland in an article Light Railways, Number 76 of April 1982.
