Fun fact! The bearded militia man that follows Kathryn around is Jeffrey Pierce the voice actor for Tommy, Joel's brother, in the game.

I truly think that Episode 3 was created for several reasons: 1. It did build the world, and also replaced the part of the game where Joel and Ellie travel through his gated town and get to know him a bit. This was the shows way of diverging from the game a bit, and making Bill a slightly more likeable character. Mostly it cuts out a lot of what could have been scene-for-scene gameplay stuff and a really nasty Nick Offerman cameo. 2. There definitely seemed to be a bit of influence from the "gay agenda," but not in the way many internet trolls tried to make it out to be. Their relationship felt incredibly natural, and we were shown the moments from their lives that really allowed us to see their characters develop. It wasn't shoving a "gay agenda" in people's faces, but gave the two KNOWN gay character a truly amazing, believable story from beginning to end. I think this is incredibly helpful towards normalizing seeing gay couples in media. 3. The names Bill and Frank mean nothing to anyone who hasn't played the game. This episode served to explain their dynamic much better than the game, as many internet trolls seemed to conveniently miss the details that told them that Bill and Frank were gay. 4. Filler, to prolong our wait and keep us at the edge of our seat. EDIT: This probably should've been left on the last video... I just watched the intro and all of this kind of hit me at once, so I paused and wrote it out. I also think everyone is entitled to their opinion, and don't mind if you think the episode was a bit pointless. Personally, I found it to be one of the more touching ways the screenwriters paid homage to the game and the characters, by allowing these two to have a slight change in their stories which makes a huge impact and serves to explain how they fit into this world and the eventual plot.

Unrelated from my last comment, I absolutely adore how the screenwriters kept a lot of the scenes from the game in the show, and allow them to play out almost the exact same way (with some actor inflection, to really sell themselves as the character.) The scene of them driving in the car and joking about the magazine? Almost identical, and just as wholesome.

This episode was of course a bit slower as a setup episode (as you said), but it’s also very much a character development episode since it’s largely about the development of Joel and Ellie’s relationship. Also, I feel like the title “The Last of Us” tells you that it’s a story about various people at the end of the world, and even though we obviously follow Joel and Ellie primarily, there’s a bit of a framework story to it (especially as handled so far by the show), so each arc can be partly thought of as being a short story in an anthology, with each one being about its own characters and their lives post-apocalypse, which puts the Bill and Frank story in a slightly different light… yes, it’s world-building for the “primary” story, but it’s also just its own story about some of the last of us (humanity). Keep up the great reactions, thought I’d comment to help the algorithm! 👍

In terms of how this compares to the game, you don't see Kansas City, don't meet Kathleen & friends, but do meet Henry & Sam in Pittsburgh. What happens next is very similar to how things go in the game. As for the end of the season, I can see a way there that lines up with the end of the game with them hitting one major story beat per episode.

Thanks for reacting to TLOU! Always great to listen to an author’s POV. Also, it’d be interesting to see if your opinions change per episode if you also listen to HBOs TLOU Podcast where Mazin/Druckman discuss certain decisions made in service of the series storyline and how it differs from the game. Do their comments change your mind if they differ from yours? Thank you.

You're right it is a rather slow-paced episode, but it's better to see as the first of a two-part arc.. It's all about love and because of it, the things we are willing to do or not do anymore. I love your critical view of the show, keep it up!

Oh yeah, i think in the game there is a scene where you can hear an infected woman crying in despair as she’s eating someone unable to stop herself 😅
@pinklefoo

People say that, but how do we know that's why she was crying? These people have lost their minds, maybe. If crying means they are sad, then are they angry whenever they are screeching and yelling? Could it be misfiring neurons? Maybe is because they are suffering and in pain. What if the scene you describe is more like a person in massive pain, eating a sandwich? I'm not saying you're wrong but people seem really confident that's the reason and I don't understand why.

If you like Melanie Lynskey, you need to watch Yellowjackets. The series has Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Ella Purnell (the voice of Jinx in League of Legends), and Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers, Scream). Season 2 is adding Elijah Wood and Lauren Ambrose. Pilot episode is still free here on KZitem.

I kinda wonder what you’d think of the Bill and Frank section of the game compared to what they did with episode 3 of the show. And how you’d compare both and which version you would have preferred. The Bill and Frank story in the game is totally different from what you saw in episode 3.

FYI the reason Joel was made so much coffee is because he didn't sleep at all. He stood watch over Ellie whole night after she asked if anyone is going to find them. At least most of the night.

You are right, Joel felt his purpose..............................but, WE never would have known how he felt his purpose without eps 2 and 3. They weren't for Joel or the advancement of the plot for him, they where for us to feel and for the plot to advance for us. Good writers take an audience with them on their journey and no one can argue these 2 writers aren't totally awesome. I agree with the other commentators also, this is not the last of Joel and Ellie. It is the last of Us

If it's the last of everyone left, every episode would have a different main character while Joel and or Ellie made a cameo appearance like episode 3. But it's not, it's about Ellie and Joel. Just like the game is. Can argue over whether or not the main character is Ellie, or Joel, but the idea that the show is not about them is something I don't understand. Also episode 2 advanced the plot for sure. Episode 3 advanced our understanding of the world. World building and plot are not the same thing.

Episode 3 was absolutely not an example of Bury Your Gays. That trope requires more than just having gay characters that die. It requires that their death be exceptional, generally being killed off _because_ they're gay. In a piece of media where side characters drop like flies, gay characters dying too aren't exceptional. Bill and Frank's story in the show is actually the polar opposite of Bury Your Gays. They got to live into old age with the person they loved until the point where they were dealing with degenerative, terminal illness... during the apocalypse, and then went out on their own terms before getting to the point where they literally couldn't function. Bill and Frank got a happy ending.
@samuelVFX

I don't think the deaths of Tess, Bill ,and Frank have motivated Joel to take care of Ellie. He was on this quest before any of them died so it can't be. I think what we are seeing is the show getting the audience on board with Joel's quest and true motivations. At some point we would wonder, why is he doing this? He doesn't seem to care. He is so bitter, why would he stick it out? But really we haven't seen the 20 years of death and suffering he has. We haven't seen him full-filling his values to survive for family as he eludes to. Once we see these few moments we understand this is what his life has always been like and how he keeps moving forward, loss after loss. The show is explaining his purpose with these moments in my mind, not trying to get Joel onboard, but us. I'd say if there was a motivating death for his purpose it would be his daughters. The one that truly gave him his purpose to go on. Redemption for that first failure to protect family. At least that is what I gather so far in the show.

You asked about how this compares to the game and, without getting into spoilers, the differences aren't too significant but probably make for better pacing and storytelling. In the game, this sequence takes place in Pittsburgh instead of Kansas City. And the inhabitants aren't really characterized more than ruthless cannibals. Here, Kathleen's people are humanized a bit more, which helps make for some better dramatic tension, particularly once we learn more about her, Henry and Sam.

The idea that you can never separate the art from the artist is ridiculous. How many people are avoiding miramax or getting upset with streaming services that have miramax films? Anyone? No. It seems the stench of cancellation only sticks to cis-women and black people. That, I will not support.

@@HSPaisley Who's been cancelled? Rowling? The anti-woke are clinging to her in droves like a wet blanket. She's been anything but cancelled, this game has sold incredibly well before it was even released with high profile gender critical people heaping praise on her personally. The false-equivalence with Miramax does raise a good point about complicity with suffering in general. There's a great conversation to be had there. I don't want this to seem like I'm judging you (because for one, it's not my place or right to judge you, and for another I don't think you've done anything that needs to be judged for at all) but I would encourage you to seek out some literature on this game in particular. Ideally by someone from the trans community. Jessie Gender has done a good video about it, but after being under near constant attack since trailers first released, she's become a little jaded about it. The Gamespot article may be a better place to start.

@@HSPaisley I thought the separation of art and artist was supposed to come after the artist had passed? And given this particular artist has said she views her royalty cheques as tacit endorsement of her hateful views I'm not sure it tracks either. The game itself uses her IP with or without her direct involvement, but even then it falls down; a plot wherein the player helps put down a slave revolt (but it's okay, because the slaves themselves are a hook-nosed gold-coveting cabal attempting to influence the wizarding govt, and hey! they're even doing Blood Libel stuff by stealing and sacrificing the pure-blooded magic children) and the game was developed with heavy involvement from at least one self-avowed neofascist and VAs with domestic violence convictions forbidden from seeing their children any more. But it's because Joanne is a cis woman is why she's being cancelled, right?

@@AndrewD8Red You are judging me, Andrew. We all make judgements all the time. There is nothing wrong with that. All I do on KZitem is judge other peoples decisions. I have not played the game, obviously, and I am wary on any literature written about it as regardless of what side, there will be an extreme bias. I always try to keep an open mind, especially when I am talking to someone I disagree with. I encourage you, and everyone to try and do the same. In terms of cancellation, and your passive aggressive comment about my “false-equivalency”, I don’t think JK Rowling is having a rough day. Ya know? Cancelled or not, I am sure she is doing find. I don’t think she should be getting death threats, but I don’t think she is financially hurt by this. This anti-JK Rowling thing doesn’t touch her. It touches her fans. The people others feel the have the right to bully because they find enjoyment in a game. I am aware of that. I am also aware that societal vitriol is targeted towards some groups more than other. As a bi-racial women, I take more note when it happens to women and black people because I can obviously relate more to that. This doesn’t mean I don’t care what happens to other groups, it just means this is the one I see most. Apologies if I seem passive aggressive.
