Fun fact: they filmed the Joel and Ellie reunion before the Ellie killed David scene. It’s a testament of what an outstanding actress Bella is. She deserves all the awards.

The actor that played James was Troy Baker, who was Joel's voice actor in the games. So glad he was included in this show. 😊

Interesting point you had about the Penicillin. When I thought about it more, it actually makes perfect sense: David is a true psychopath and so is very narcissistic: his image of himself is that of a benevolent God. So I realized of COURSE he would offer her the meds ... He would see that act as how kind and good he is even though he plans to kill Joel the very next day.

Dude is a groomer to the core. All his conversations with children have the same _"let go of your old life.. you need me"_ vibe. His words aren't harsh but they're very intrusive, isolating and uncomfortable. Also his delusion that he's a good person... very creepy character

You ask why he chose to recruit Ellie as more than just his latest "toy". He actually did see her as being like himself. Craig Mazin who wrote the episode said that David was right when he said that he recognized the same violent heart in Ellie that he has. When Joel killed the neighbor Sarah reacted in horror and tears. She said, "you killed her" shocked not by her neighbor being infected but by what she had just seen her father do. Tommy asked if he should shoot her, but Joel waited until she was right in front of him and killed her by caving her skull in with a plumber's wrench. When Joel beat the soldier to death in front of Ellie with his fist Ellie wasn't shocked or crying. As Craig Mazin put it she was activated by the violence. She liked it. She's more like Joel than even Sarah was. When she found the infected buried under the rubble, she first made it follow her knife with its eye before cutting it open. She wanted it to be aware of what she was doing, to suffer something. The look of hatred on her face when she finally stabbed it in the head was all about revenge for Riley and Tess. Like Joel Ellie not only believes in revenge but she takes pleasure in it. The real damage that David has done is to release the monster in Ellie, the one she shares with Joel. It will have serious consequences not only for others who become the objects of Ellies revenge but for herself. The theme of the show is love in both its forms as a means of redemption that can transform our lives for the better and as the driving force of the most terrible acts you can imagine.

David is also an example of a manipulative leader falling for his own propaganda: he pretended God is giving him advice for good decisions for his flock of sheep, but he made an obvious bad decision by staying in that resort town for the winter.

Ive seen that sentiment a lot.. people thinking there are too few infected... I feel kinda conflicted about it. On the one hand... I think it's partly people projecting their expectations on the show instead of just letting the show be what it needs to be. And I get that human characters with their infinite range of motivations, emotions, etc are more dynamic and interesting. But yeah at the same time, man I'd also love to see what they could come up with, in terms of expanding the lore and mythology of the cordyceps.
@Tensen01

@@Nomadic813 They already expanded it as much as feasible. And besides, the show, and even the game, isn't ABOUT the Cordyceps, it's about the people living in the world. They make for great gameplay, but for actual storytelling they aren't terribly important beyond the setting.
