This. If Marlene _really_ had he courage of her convictions she'd have given Ellie a choice then gone ahead regardless. If she chooses "yes", great, Ellie's a hero and we're all on the same page, if not Marlene could still choose to do it against Ellie's will (except then she'd have to carry the full burden of murdering a 14 year old child. Refusing to shoulder that burden is what makes Marlene selfish, _arguably_ not as selfish as Joel but still...). Rational me is on Marlene's side (though she handled it badly from the start), emotional me totally understands Joel's perspective (and may well have acted the same way under the same circumstances).

I loved everything about the hospital massacre montage. I love that the sound is muffled, and we mainly just hear this music. And everytime the sound of the violence breaks through (like that one guy's scream when Joel stabs him), it is effective. It is essentially from Joel's perspective. He's almost disassociated. Because he is of a one-track mind. Nothing matters to him, these people don't matter to him. Only Ellie and her life matters to him. Everyone else is just an obstacle. Someone who needs to go down. He has no emotions or rage or anything against these people. They are simply in his way. Also glad that they didn't have him kill the nurses. He killed everyone who was a threat or in his way. The nurses were neither. Plus, the game REQUIRES the player to kill the surgeon and the nurses are optional.

On the official podcast the showrunners talked about Joel's detached, calm demeanour during the hospital massacre and they referenced Unforgiven. They talked about how Munny managed to walk out of these situations alive not because he was the fastest or the toughest... but simply because he was the calmest. AND he was lucky. He's "always been lucky when it comes to killing". This calmness is essentially Joel's super power, if you wanna call it that. He can detach himself, he can stay calm. I agree that had the Fireflies been honest with Ellie, she was the only one who could’ve convinced him. The way it happened, they were sacrificing a 14 year old in hopes that their plan for a cure would work. If it didn’t, the only known immune person would then be dead and they would have no second chances. And, they triggered Joel in the worst way the could have. Once his relationship with Ellie is at its strongest, they wake him up to say they’re killing his second daughter. Yup, rampage it is. Tess said it, “we’re not good people.”

I never played the game and the ending was never ruined for me (which i was soooooo happy about). What i love the most about this ending is just how many different perspectives you can look at it and justify it in your own head.. After watching this from so many reactors one of the big things that really makes that "Who was right" argument so good is that neither Marlene nor Joel did the right thing where we can go "No the right choice was this" because they both were lying to themselves to justify their actions. When Marlene confronts Joel in the parking garage and says, "You know the choice she was going to make." Joel pauses because he knows (from their journey) that Ellie would go under the surgery. Marlene didn't know Ellie as she just handed her to Fedra and never knew what kind of person she grew up to be. So when Marlene says that, the truth is, if she actually believed that statement that Ellie would have agreed with the Fireflies there would be no reason not to tell her if she truly believed that Ellie would do it. Watching this so many times the ending is just heartbreaking between Joel and Ellie. Pedro and Bella just absolutely crush their roles so you go on this long journey for these two characters and fall in love with their dynamic and then when Joel lies to Ellie, you are just crushed. Bella does an absolute clinic in acting as you can almost spot the exact moment that Ellie loses the trust in Joel just before the credits roll. Heartbreaking, just heartbreaking. Give this show all the awards! An interesting side note is when they had people play test and rate the game's ending they found that people who didn't have kids were 50/50 to justify Joel's actions. However, for people who had kids, 100% said they agreed with Joel's actions, almost without hesitation. I can see why this game became so revered.

@Vitaliy Muradov It's just that dooming humanity was not a choice in this scenario, the lie was. Dooming humanity = saving Ellie, and everything that went down at the hospital was triggered by how Marlene and the fireflies handled things. It's like what they said in the reaction, Joel didn't had a choice. He asked to see her and the order was to gun him down. He had a split second to figure out HOW he was gonna save her, and he did. Letting her die in those circumstances was never an option because it's an exact repeat of Sarah - she died by the hands of an officer without even knowing she was gonna die for the "greater good". The only reason that soldier shot at them was because she was hurt, and therefore, could be infected. So for many viewers it's easier to let that slide, because on his shoes, they would've done the same. The lie, however, was a choice. She was alive, and Joel handled everyone that knew about her immunity. She gave him many chances to come clean (something the fireflies didn't) and he could've told her the truth, but he knows she probably wouldn't have followed him to Jackson then, and that's all he wants: to keep her safe.

I have to disagree. I think Joel did this for HIMSELF. He can't lose her, now that he has invested his own healing in her. I agree. In fact, I don't think it could ever be replicated unless the fireflies were willing to go to absolutely diabolical lengths. You'd essentially need to find a pregnant person who would be willing to be infected with cordyceps and die, while agreeing to let their child be killed as well. I don't think you would ever find that. To manage it without a volunteer like that, they'd have to be willing to essentially imprison a pregnant person, wait until they're moments away from delivering, unleash an infected on them at just the right time, cut the cord, steal the baby and murder the mother (or leave them to turn). And then kill the child in the procedure too.

That was a really awesome Episode to End the Season! I am one of those that never played the Game (or even had heard of it before this Show was announced - maybe because I don't own a PS at all) and this Episode hit me as a Father of one Kid (also a Daughter) very deep too. I could totally understand Joel's reactions (or put myself in his shoes) and what he felt and did. He really now does see Ellie as (kind of) his Daughter that he needs to protect at all cause and means necessary. In his Mind he's not loosing another Daughter - he'll do anything for Ellie. At the End, when he figured out what they are going to do with Ellie (the surgery - and basically killing her to get her Brain) and Marlene giving him the Knife from Ellie - it was the same for him as getting the Watch back in the Days from Sarah - the last thing he ever gonna see from her (Ellie). That was trigger enough for him to "snap" and go into "I'll kill everyone in the way to get to this Child"! And I felt it and understood his emotion. The Music and the "muffled" original Sound (The shoots) where more impactful as they showed it - as if they just let the original Sound. It showed (me) that Joel was more in a trance-state to just get to Ellie in time to save her, then consciously going through the Hospital, he killed everyone in it's way to his destination - save Ellie! Him not telling the truth about what happened in the Hospital was his way of trying to protect her too. As always - I really enjoyed watching you two throughout this TV-Show and hope seeing you again for Season 2... (witch I heard from Interviews with the Producers, will NOT be the same as the second Part of the Game - they plan on doing things different. Again, no clue how the Game was, never plaid it - LOL) Greetings from Germany, Uwe

One thing to consider about the ending is that it hit even harder in the game because no one knew at the time whether there would be a sequel. Would she decide to sacrifice herself after knowing? Maybe yes. But Marlene didn't allow it to happen. Had Marlene given Ellie a chance to decide, allowed her & Joel to process what's gonna happen & given them time to say Goodbye, it could be avoided. I would blame Joel 'only if' he kills everyone even after knowing Ellie's willing to die. Not before that. Joel's actions are a direct result of Marlene's decision to hurry everything without giving Ellie a choice. They waited for 20 years, what's another few months! Joel gave Ellie a choice twice & respected her decisions both the times. ep.6 & ep.9 The only thing I don't like on Joel's part is that he lied to her. IMO he should have been upfront about why he did it. Ellie might have disagreed with his actions but she definitely would have understood his motives (selfless/selfish love for his daughter) better. But he was afraid of losing the relationship. I would be curious to know what Ellie would react when/if she finds out what happened. Will she be angry at Joel - for killing those people or only for lying to her? To sum up - If Marlene is not in super hurry & give some time to Ellie to respond, only then Joel gets to know what Ellie wants.. If Ellie says Yes & even then Joel kills everyone then & only then he is to be blamed.. If Marlene doesn't give that chance to Elli, then we don't actually know what Ellie might have said 'before' the surgery (Whatever she may say afterwards is her afterthought considering whatever happened). So before the surgery whatever Joel does is a direct consequence of Marlene's actions & only she is to be blamed! As a parent I would do the exact same thing as Joel did. I will take a blame only If I did those killings even after knowing my child's wish to sacrifice themselves. All the best to HBO. If they ignore this simple fact in next season then they will have very angry reactions from parents. Protecting the children from the 'predator' is a primal animal instinct.

Would've done the same thing in Joel's shoes, if the set of circumstances were identical. I still don't understand why they had to rush through all of that process so much...the world had been shit for 20 years, it wasn't gonna suddenly end if the fireflies had just taken a few hours to explain everything to Ellie and Joel and let the two of them talk. But that, of course, is considering they were gonna respect her agency and let her just simply walk away if she denied the procedure, which obviously wasn't the case. Ps: I think you guys were one of the few reactors to point out how much of a hypocrite Marlene was in the garage scene.

Right? When Marlene asks what Ellie would want I was like, "Lady, you don't get to ask me that question when you didn't bother to ask it of her." Also, Marlene telling Joel she understands really rubbed me the wrong way. Don't get me wrong, given her connection to Ellie's mum I'm sure it was hard for her. However, despite maybe watching over Ellie from afar to make sure she's ok and seeing her grow, Marlene didn't really know Ellie. They didn't have any kind of real relationship to speak of, which isn't even close to the same as Joel who has gone through so much with Ellie and come to see her as his daughter.

The ending is essentially the trolley problem. And, in the words of the co-showrunner Craig Mazin, "the thing about the trolley problem is that it's a PROBLEM!" Some audience members really want to poke holes in the scenario in order to justify themselves being right. They're kinda deluding themselves a littlee: "Joel thought that humanity wasn't worth saving" "Well akshually in real life science there can't be a cure for fungus hur Durr" [in real life science, human fungus zombies also don't exist. It's fiction. If clickers can exist, so can an absolute outlier of a person who shows immunity to this fungus] "Who knows if the fireflies would even be able to distribute it hrrrmmmm." Fuck all that. Joel is not thinking about that any of that. He just doesn't want Ellie to die, simple as that. Is the Fireflies' decision murky? Yes. Is it serving a greater purpose? Also yes. Is Joel's decision murky? Yes. Is it serving a greater purpose? No. But he loves this kid and will absolutely not let any harm befall her. Did Ellie deserve a choice/to be informed? Yes. Did anyone give her the choice or inform her? No. Is she actually fit to make this decision? Who's to say, prob not. Would she have sacrificed herself? Yes. The entire situation is intentionally murky & grey & complex. Both sides having justifications for what they did is precisely what makes it so good. It's not meant to be a comfortable decision. And that is good. But if you were to ask Marlene or Joel if they would do what they did again... They'll say yes. And then there's the third side of Ellie & her situation. Everyone chose for her, no one told her. It is a tragedy through and through. Because Joel saved Ellie, but now their relationship is almost certainly affected by the lie Joel tells her.

Always great to see your videos. Loved the reaction. That conflict. People have been discussing Joel's choice for ten years, and the tv show just brought it all back. In a way, both Marlene and Joel decided to lie to protect Ellie. And while Marlene was right - Ellie would sacrifice herself for the chance of a cure - Joel's decision was not dependent on Ellie's will. That is what defines Joel. He has became a father again. And as a father, you don't sacrifice your child for the greater good. And you don't put that decision on a child either. The beautiful thing about that ending is that conflict, that contradiction. Joel knows Ellie deserves to live, and he will do everything to save her. Even if that means condemning humanity. And while I would say that a society that needs to sacrifice its children to save itself isn't worth saving, it's obvious that Joel is "burning his soul", as Neil Druckmann said, during that horrible massacre. Can't wait for Season 2.

Hey, Schmitts! Ashley Johnson, who voiced Ellie in the game played Ellie's pregnant mom, Anna. The giraffes are straight out of the game. I'm so glad they kept that scene in! Save for the birth scene, Joel's attempted suicide story and a final action-packed push through a clicker- and bloater-infested tunnel en route to the hospital, the episode plays out almost exactly like the game! There are no other options! Animals can't be used as test subjects because they're unaffected! Neurosurgeons are a rarity in an apocalyptic world! Humanity's existence is poised on a knife's edge. The stakes are too big to risk Ellie saying 'no'. Joel sacrificed the lives of everyone in the hospital and everyone who dies of cordyceps from that day forward! Ellie had already decided before the hospital that she would see her mission through no matter what the cost and told Joel so. She said, "There's no halfway with this." Who wouldn't sacrifice themselves to save the world? It is her sole purpose for being. To deny fulfillment of this goal is to deny her destiny. Frankly, even if she didn't want to, she should be forced to kicking and screaming. It's devil's arithmetic but how would you feel if a loved one could have been spared but for the refusal of the one who carried the cure? What supreme arrogance! The big surprise at the end of the game is when you are forced to kill the entire medical team to advance the plot. The game doesn't move along until you slaughter them all. At that point, you realize that your POV character, Joel, is the villain who dooms the world for purely selfish reasons. Heroes sacrifice. Joel does not. Ellie knows he is lying to her but she accepts the lie out of love for her surrogate father because the truth of his monstrous, self-serving decision is too horrifying to acknowledge. The hero was the villain all along.

I think it is interesting how FEDRA is known for essentially being the surviving government under Martial Law that never relinquished its control to its citizens post fungus zombeh. Yet the organization that was formed to stop it, the fireflies, by the end of the game/series had essentially started doing the same thing. Both, undoubtedly acted the way they did in the "benefit" of all, but both speaking FOR the people even when the people couldn't speak for themselves. If you pick up the audio logs in the game, and read the notes it is implied that the journey west for the east coast fireflies was rough, where they lost half their crew making the journey. It is also implied that Marlene was losing control of the fireflies because nothing was working for them. They lost men fighting Fedra in boston, during the move, and didn't have a cure for months after when they thought they would get it and had to relocate from colorado to utah for unspecified (or at least I can't remember) reasons. When they did finally get Ellie, it is insinuated that even if Marlene wanted to stop the plan from moving on, there wasn't anything really that she could've done. She was leading them at that point only as a figurehead, probably for what she HAD done in the past. But nothing was going to stop the rest of the fireflies from proceeding, even her objections.

"Even after what you've done, we can still find away." Just like Ellie at the end with the question, Marlene gave Joel another chance for redemption. He knew w/o a doubt Ellie would have been selfless and made the choice for humanity. So, Joel made the selfish decision for himself and her. Justify Joel's actions good, bad or for whatever reason, but it is, what it is. Plus, this show is from Joel and Ellie's perspective where we've grown attached. What would our perspective be if we followed Marlene and some of her people on their journey across the country and experienced their trials & tribulations as we became attached to them? Would they just be fodder to Joe's aggression, or would they have meant more since we became attached? Regardless, great reaction as usual!

I fully understand what Joel did, but I fully understand Marlene and the rest of the fireflies too for not leaving the faith of the world up to an individual choice, you can't apply the rules of a normal world on a world where a constant fear of death and no light at the end of a 20 year tunnel is part of daily life. the ending was exactly how it was in the game, from the moment on where Joel wakes up and goes on the rampage- The Last of Us is about decisions and consequences. Every decision brings with it a weight that someone has to carry. I HATED the ending at the beginning while playing but after a while i accepted and liked it. And this si the same for the WHOLE second game. theres SO MUCH to HATE in thiat game but after letting it cook in your head for a while and thinking about what happened and why Naughty Dog told the games story the way they did....its just brilliant story telling. FUN FACT: WHen The Last Of Us 2 came out, an internal document from Microsoft XBOX leaked, revealing that did internal reviews of competitors (Sony Playstation in this case) games in order to compare them to their own titles and find ways to raise their own bar if necessary. One of the lines in the TLOU2 review said that the title is years ahead of every competition in terms of quality of storytelling and execution.

I remember watching my older brother play this whole game 10 years ago when I was 10, seeing and hearing Ashley Johnson just floored me at the beginning of the ep. Her voice is so iconic to Ellie and it brought me back, and that scene itself just kills me too. Everything in this show has been so damn good, the music, the cinematography, and especially the writing and acting. Joel and Ellie make my heart melt every sentence like not much has been able to, so It's hard for me to blame Joel too much. Like you guys said, he had finally started to really breakthrough with her, and without a choice they were both separated from each other for potentially ever. I can totally understand his determination to free her. Ultimately though, Ellie wasn't given a choice and the hard part is she would've probably gone through with it too. Such a messy situation though, hopefully Part 2 cleans up the discussion a little bit!

I never played this on Playstation and never knew about the game. When I found out they were making a show, I went back a few months ago and watched the full gameplay videos on YT, in terms of understanding the original story and where the hype was coming from. If you view the full game play videos as a 12 hour movie.. it's one of the better movies I can remember watching in the last 20 years. It's also sort of fun to "hang out" with the characters, even if you aren't playing yourself. I do think the game was better, sort of like how people prefer the GOT books vs the show, but the show was very good also. Especially in terms of expanding on some of the characters or back stories. I loved your reactions, you are such a good couple and compliment each other so well. Your discussions at the end of this video summarized my own thoughts after the events of this final episode. The internal questions and viewing it from all of the different angles. My own thoughts overall were that the Fireflies started the fuckery and Joel finished it, no one was 100% right or wrong and everyone involved suffers as a result. It was a really well crafted storyline through out, despite this horror world that they are living in. Really creative and well executed in terms of the roller coaster ride and the emotional connections that the audience has as we all go through the ups and downs as the story progresses. The game shows it as seasons of the year while the show is more focused on weekly episodes. Shout out to the voice actors of Joel and Ellie from the game, they are/were amazing. More so though than the TV actors, but at the same time.. they picked two of my fave GOT actors for the show, and they also did a really great job.. no one deserves any criticism.. just appreciation. I guess the TV side of things has a bigger budget and reaches a wider audience but the original is the story in it's purest form. The chemistry in the games between Joel and Ellie was amazing, the chemistry in the show was also really good. You can tell a lot of attention to detail was put into the show and it seems a lot of the audience has appreciated that. It's a rough ride but it's also a powerful story line and gets you to ask a lot of questions. If someone wanted to know my thoughts on the ending of this show, this reaction would be the first one I would recommend. The "rampage" moment in this video was really funny, and later discussions about it were one of the big highlights of this video.... love you guys' reactions to shows like this or Cobra Kai.

There's a lot of discussion here about Ellie not being given a choice, but even if she was told everything, she doesn't really have a choice. There is no way the Fireflies would let her go if Ellie told them "No, I don't agree to die to make a cure." In the game you find some recordings Marlene made (and her journal) which explain how the Fireflies told her they would have to kill Ellie to create the vaccine and "ask for her permission to go ahead with the procedure" but she says that it was just a formality. If Marlene had said "No, we're not doing this" there likely would have been a mutiny. The Fireflies have been working on a cure for ~20 years - they wouldn't have let the one immune person go just because their leader was friends with that person's mother. Once Ellie arrived at the Fireflies and they determined they needed to chop up her brain to get at the Cordyceps growth, Ellie was going to die no matter what.

Even though this episode felt a little more rushed, imo, the best part about it is that you get the beats of the game with a little more emotional tension from the music. Definitely not a strong finale by any means, still, you feel that sense of fatherly duty to protect Ellie, no matter the cost. The issue is that when we started exploring other avenues the game did not, with the idea of the Pre-Cordyceps world and episode 3's version of Frank and Bill (one of them better win an Emmy), we got a view of something truly amazing that builds off of a well-crafted story. It just plays too safe towards the end and follows the game beat-for-beat past episode 5. I have faith Part 2 will be amazing, but I just hope we get a better look at the characters and the world they live(d) in like the first half of this show. Amazing reaction by far, and Sam was right: this episode leaves me feeling so unfulfilled.

In an ideal world, it would've been Ellie's right to decide (though it can be argued that she wasn't in the right state of mind to make such a decision) whether to sacrifice herself for the rest of humanity or not. But let's not forget that Joel & Tommy have murdered many innocent people just b/c they weren't good at surviving in other ways. Those victims had the right to live as well, but such rules aren't upheld in a broken world.

Ellie literally has no choice here. If they had explained everything to her and Ellie said no, do you really think the Fireflies would have just let her go? Of course not - they would have done the surgery anyway. So why offer her a choice when they're not going to listen to her decision?

Great Reaction! It's also fun to read those who are in the medical field debate this. The Dr was probably pre-med when the outbreak happened. What qualifies him as a specialist? You think they would have ran as many tests as possible to make sure that was the only way to go. There was no blood test, no spinal tap, CT Scan or MRI Machine. Unless there was something definitive, I would have to take Joel's position. Just about any parent would do what he did. For more context, go check out the podcast. Has some great insight.

The Fireflies are the only ones working on a cure, and have been doing so for ~20 years. They would have people that were already doctors before the outbreak, and they would be training new doctors. Marlene says that they scanned Ellie, so they would have already done a CT/MRI scan. And they say that it's the Cordyceps growth in her brain that they need to create a cure - her blood, a spinal tap, or even a biopsy would not help. It's the growth itself they need.

Great reaction you two! Of the reactions that I've watched for this episode so far, Sam's, by far, is the strongest. Yeah- it's a tough decision to have to make. As a parent, I've always come down on Joel's side, but I get the other side as well. A word of caution regarding Pt. II (which I'm currently playing) - if you watch any videos about the HBO show ( i.e. behind the scenes) or watch a playthrough of the game (which I do in case I get stuck) you run the risk of spoiler videos being suggested to you by the KZitem algorithm about what happens in pt II. This is what happened to me and I had THE big thing that happens spoiled. So be careful out there!!!

There's a subtle difference in Marlene in the game. When you hear her personal thoughts, she says something like "I doubt they really would give me a choice." She made it sound like when they told her that Ellie was going to have to die to make a cure, that it was already a done deal, and while they would like her go ahead, it was going to happen either way.

Agreed. If Marlene had told the Fireflies "I'm not giving the order to kill a child to create the cure" they would have mutineed and done it anyway. No way they've been working on a cure for ~20 years and let the only immune person leave because their leader was friends with her mom.

That's the criticism I have of the end, that it doesn't make medical/scientific sense to kill Ellie. 20:35 I am glad you brought up this argument. Early on in the show, they made it a point multiple times to tell the audience that there is no cure, no vaccine, and one is not possible. And this was coming from the top minds in their fields, be it evolutionary biologists, epidemiologists and mycologists. I do understand the moral dilemma they were going for, and I understand that Marlene and the doctor might not have been fully aware of this, but this was always something with the writing that bothered me. But still, an absolutely phenomenal series.
