The AI partners actually do serve gameplay purposes. Ellie has saved my ass many times. She calls out enemies behind you, she even kills some on her own if they get near her, and can help you when an enemy grabs you. She will also sometimes give you health kits if you are really low on health

Yeah, I mentioned how she can call out enemies for you. I really likes that, especially how she knew where there were relative to your screen. And yeah, it's great that partners help in combat, but I don't like how they can wrestle clickers and I can't. And wow, I actually never noticed the health pack thing, maybe I was managing my health too well lol. Yeah, that's pretty interesting, but I still think I like the RE5 shared partner inventory better, where you could sort of shove extra items like health and ammo onto your partner and have her give them to you when you needed them. Thanks!

I think Naughty Dog has been going in a very weird direction since Uncharted started. They're much more narrative focused which is commendable but not as much when the gameplay is left in the dust. It bothers me because the mechanics they have created for Uncharted and The Last of Us translate really well over to multiplayer. They have all the gameplay there, but they're a little afraid of letting that rule the experience or at least share the throne of the story. I love these games but I think they've had a negative impact on the industry.

Very thorough review. I considered (and still consider) The Last of Us to be one of my favorite games of last gen, but I realize it was more for its story than its gameplay. You brought up some very valid points here while also being fair and commending TLOU on its successes. Keep up the good work!

I'd love to do Tomb Raider! Unfortunately it's one of the few 90's game series that I never had the opportunity to play. I was seriously considering getting the remastered version of the latest rehash for the PS4, but I wasn't sure how much I would understand. I think a better place to start would be with the original, but I'm afraid I might have controversial opinions now. Doing these big mature and popular games is different than the old Nintendo games I'm used to, reception is generally negative, people don't like hearing me say bad things about their favorite games lol. Thanks for the subscription, I'll do my best to keep you entertained!

Good review as always. I think many of your problems talked about immersion rather than gameplay though. A good way to summarize it in TLOU is there's an isolated consistent ruleset that drives the gameplay, and some coherence in regards to immersion was sacrificed to deliver the best gameplay possible. I think this is the right call, as the player would get really annoyed if enemies were alerted if a partner got spotted. I still agreed with many points; the immersion does get broken a lot during this game. For instance, while you can hear people talking from far away, you can't detect those exact same people in "hearing" mode! What's up with that?
@RamHoot

Yeah, that was a little disappointing. The sound design for this game was pretty remarkable, so it's a shame that something like spotting the speaking enemies didn't pass into gameplay. It seems like there's this strong disconnect between what the game can do and what the player can do. It feels a little bit like the artists and programmers were fenced-off from each other during development or something. Thanks!

Bumping old reply but, this very 'Elli allerting enemy AI annoyance' is such a flawed argument it is not even funny, and I see it popping out all the time. If the AI in Least of us was any good to start with, Elie would remain as stealthy as the player. Also the whole AI is a joke either way, the enemy AI are oblivious to the player as well. TLOU is embarrassing to watch really, specially considering the fact it is dubbed a masterpiece. Which it is certainly not.

Characterization, storytelling, visual presentation, sound design and atmosphere; some of the best I've ever experienced in a game. + Actual gameplay; good enough, does equal a near-perfect game not. The game is very handholdy and blatantly linear, has abhorrently inconsistent AI, logical issues in world design and some broken mechanics. The game I love but could've adored.

SaberRexZealot thank you! The exact same sentiment I tried to express here! The game's strengths are fantastically implemented, but it's weakness are far too flawed and preventable. There was disparity when it came to where detailing could be applied. Excellent game, very engaging, but definitely not the best of the year. Thanks!

I simultaneously agree with you, and still consider TLoU one of my all time favorite games, despite its flaws. Since this is so old I know you won't revisit TLoU, but it would be cool to get your opinion of the story of TLoU, since that's where its strengths lie

I like that you wanted to focus on the gameplay of the last of us for this video. The story is so great that I feel many sorta just pass over talking about the gameplay in favor of the story. But I walked away from this video not knowing what you like/dislike about the gameplay at all. It feels like you spent a lot of time tearing apart small details that were unrealistic, such as how the only blades you find are scissors. Or how enemies didn’t appear in a combat encounter until you entered that combat encounter. Or how a wall that blocks you from going backwards shouldn’t be there because there’s no way you could have gotten across before. Even though I disagree that these points make for a bad game, I do think this is a fair angle to take with TLoU specifically because of its huge focus on story and immersion. But that’s not the angle you are presenting your case from. You said it’s from a gameplay angle (or “technical” angle according to the title) A bit after this you give a lot of focus to the fact that allies can’t be seen by enemies. You then go on to say that the reason people weren’t bugged by this is because they were “non gamers” and they “don’t understand the mechanics behind games.” (17:40) This statement seems very hypocritical and gatekeep-y to me. YOU are the one who isn’t understanding the mechanics behind this game. You’re so concerned with the game being “realistic” that you can’t see that partners can’t be caught so that gameplay can remain consistent and fair. It wouldn’t be fair to punish a player by forcing them out of stealth because an AI partner (that they can’t control) ruined the encounter for them. For an example of that, look at how everyone complains about Tails in the Sonic 2 special stages. Having him get hit and lose your rings is frustrating and unfair (and in that case, you actually do have some control over tails, so imagine how frustrating it would be when you have no control over them.) Ultimately, this video feels like a long string of nitpicks about a bunch of little parts of the game that were not realistic. Instead of a wider talk about how the gameplay doesn’t have much to offer beyond standard 3rd person shooter gameplay and a small crafting system (something I don’t fully agree with, but I see where people are coming from in that situation) I know this video is over 7 years old, but considering you doubled down on this opinion in your TLoU2 + BfBB video last year, I assume that you still hold this opinion. If I’m wrong about that, or I misinterpreted stuff you were saying in this video, let me know. I got frustrated at the gate keeping when talking about people who liked this game or weren’t bugged by AI. But I hope that you’ll read and respond to this, cause I am interested to hear clarification on some of the stuff I brought up.

Saying the game is void of teamwork doesn't make any sense, look at these examples of teamwork... *bringing Ellie across water on the palette and her pulling the switch to get you across. *ellie stabbing enemies that are grabbing you. *helping her up a wall and her helping you in return. *ellie abandoning Sam and Henry to help you out. I'm sorry to nitpick, but it kind of bothered me.

You spoke my mind. half of the issues stem from the fact that he is playing on easy/normal or some difficulty that's tailored to enjoying the story yet he is complaining about the game prioritizing narrative. I very much agree that the last of us' gameplay didn't quite match the level of excellence of the story but this video is way too long and he dwells way too much on insignificant gripes and barely touches the real issues

Alright I made it till around the 15:00, but this review is not good. Is is extremely biased and smells very badly of "im against something almost everybody likes, notice me" you claim to present a technical review, yet you don't realise the plank/pallet sections are for avoiding loading times. you don't realise that the algorithms used are based on the limited processing power of the PS3 and that the goal of the game isn't to create something as complex and hardcore as MGS, it's not their style. you gonna ask the offspring to make a rap album or expect a rock 'n roll single of stravinsky? i've played a lot of games in my life, from DOOM to effing life is strange , and TLOU is easily in my top 10, if not top 5. My problems with the game is the unfinished unbalanced buggy multiplayer, but the single player is just top tier. I started listening with the expectations of hearing some refreshing critical thoughts, but what i got are contradictional, unrealistic and biased nitpicks
