The Bells at Canford are to under go refurbishment next week which includes: New Clappers, New Ropes, Ball Bearings but no re - tuning.
The Church is wonderful as is the the location which is right next door to the famous Canford School and the River.
Here is me ringing up the treble with 3 & 5
Bells are as follows:
1 4-2-14 D# 1897 Mears & Stainbank
2 4-3-21 C# 1739 William Knight
3 5-2-14 B 1739 William Knight
4 6-2-14 Bb 1739 William Knight
5 8-0-0 Ab 1739 William Knight
6 10-0-0 F# 1739 William Knight
The Bells sound and go awfully particualy the fourth which is by far the most deep set bell and difficult bell in the tower. Hopefully, Having new clappers will increase the resonance! Well done to the steeple keeper, (and tower captain) who has tried so hard to ease the difficulty of the bells plus he has only been ringing for 1.5 years!
The funding will enable the much-needed work to be completed in time for the bells to be rung to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the opening of the London Olympics next year. Bellhangers, Whites of Appleton, will remove the bells from the tower in January and take them to their works near Oxford. They should be back in the tower by Easter. Five of the bells date back to 1739, and the sixth was added to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. In recent years they have become increasingly difficult to ring, making them unsuitable for novices to learn on. It is hoped that an improvement will attract new ringers to the tower so that the bells of Canford Magna continue to ring out for services, weddings and national celebrations for many more years.
