Go on, Alien, live your life of hedonism and excess to your heart's content. Eat, drink, and breed as much as you desire. Enjoy the excesses of life and preen your feathers, calling yourself mighty, stronger, smarter, faster, and greater than us. That is good. For you will live and you will die knowing peace... and nothing more than that. You've never known struggle, conviction is anathema to you, and strife is something you curse at. Enjoy your life. Enjoy it well. We won't touch you. We won't attack you. We won't help you either. Live in your worlds and stations. Live in excess and knowing that when you were faced with a mightier foe, you cowered and ran. Live and enjoy life, isolated, content, and sheltered. For the stars belong to Humanity.

I liked a T-shirt. Had a pelican with a frog in its mouth. The frog is choking the pelican out. NEVER GIVE UP. In my car accident I heard EMT/FD tell Paramedics to cancel. “He will be dead long before you get here, roads are too icy..”. That’s when I quit being a patient. Scared a few FD guys. “Is this guy a training officer?” dr at hospital ER said when I grabbed him, demanded a IV, treatment. “I had heard your falling BP. To be fair, wasn't this the backstory of the Koala like race in Star Control II? A bit LESS deadly, given they blew up their own sun, and not even all the way, just made it eject the upper layer of plasma, which then destroyed the enemy fleet...which was a bad thing there when it turned out that was only one of many fleets they had. That said, this IS a bigger boom, and sometimes, it does work. Lure the enemy in, and then decapitate them like this in a blast strike, and you win, especially if you prepared a diaspora beforehand.

The story is told from the point of view of a race that belongs to the Galactic Community. They were powerful and saw humans as a laughable race, with no detail that they considered notable in comparison to them. One day, this community made contact with another group of galactic races, which was called "THEM". The difference is that this new community/alliance is warlike and has a desire for conquest. This new group of races was stronger than the Galactic Community in every aspect, so all members of the community gave up on the idea of fighting, except humanity. I believe that from this base you will be able to understand the story.
@Jack__Reaper

@@Jack__Reaper That was the introduction of "THEM": "So foolish were we, content to sit upon our mountains, that when we first encountered "THEM", we were shocked. It was like an opposing universe alliance. One built on conquest and rage. The complete counterpart to our guarded but peaceful community. Their fangs were just a little bit sharper, their brains a little bit better. Their muscles a little bit stronger. We were now the weaker side, outmatched in every way. We had no idea what to do. It was called the 20 second war, because that's how long it took for our generals to decide that fighting was useless, and that we would be destroyed either way. We might as well enjoy our last few minutes."

what does "we have evoluted you" mean in this context? The only definition I could find says it means "we have caused you to develop further", which doesn't make any sense in this context. The word "evolute" is generally used in the active, as in "it evolutes", and not in the passive, as in "it is being evoluted". Did the author mean "we have eclipsed you", as in "we are now better than you"?

I think the story has been written by an aspiring writer, who might be -a teenager, or- a foreigner. Several other stories also have beginner's mistakes, some systematically, -but not any that are this bad.- Edited to add strikethroughs in response to the logical explanation provided downthread by @Wise4HarvestTime .
@DragoonZell
8 ай бұрын
Yea its supposed to be a way of saying "we have evolved past you." Being that it is a Alien speaking the writer was trying to use words in a way that isn't normally how a Human would say them.
@m.h.6470
8 ай бұрын
@@DragoonZell but "evolved" and "evoluted" are completely different words with completely different meanings. And while the story is from an aliens perspective, that particular (easy) sentence wasn't said by an alien, it was said by the humans. So why would the author feel the need to change it to "alien speak".
@Wise4HarvestTime
8 ай бұрын
In differential geometry The evolute of a curve is the locus of all its centers of curvature. This means that when the center of curvature of each point on a curve is drawn, the resulting shape will be the evolute of that curve. For example, the evolute of a circle is a single point at its center, while the evolute of a line is not defined since its curvature is 0. ... So the humans brought the attackers to the center of their curves
@mardus_ee
8 ай бұрын
@@Wise4HarvestTime This is clever. But the use of the word 'evolute' is either fairly rare in science fiction, or I have consumed more watching than reading. The most common similar natively English-speaking phrase would be "We have you surrounded", or "You've been surrounded." So I now lean on the idea, that the writer might be from a country where English is not the majority-native language. Assuming this to be true, the same word in the possible source language might be more integrated in the source language than in English.
