Thanks so much to everyone who tweeted their Pokémon hot takes at me, even if they didn’t make it into the final video! There was an error at 5:36 - the on screen text should say: "Gen 7" This video took a lot more work than normal - watching the final video, I kind of glossed over how long it took me to figure out A) how to rank the Pokémon, and B) how to get reliable Google search data. So thanks to my Patrons for making videos like this possible! Lastly, I do know about Google Trends, a website that allows you to compare Google search data. But that tool wouldn’t have worked for this video (I tried using it, believe me!). To compare so many different search terms, I needed absolute data - for instance, Pikachu gets 4 million searches per month. Google Trends doesn’t give out raw numbers like that, so I had to go down the Google Ads route instead.

Even some of the "lazy" designs like garbodor and klinklang are admittedly cool monster designs. But also these pokemon just oozed personality especially with their active moving sprites. One significant piece of data that you did not touch on is that in addition to the gen 5 connection, nearly all of these are the middle stage of a 3-stage evolutionary cycle. No, this list is just terrible. I get what he was trying to do, but the first thing I noticed was the second stage thing. This means, most people probably looked up the first, or last stage, went to bulbapedia or serebii, and then found what they were looking for. Or, like me, they didn't give a s*** about the middle stage, cause it's the one you will remember the least. If you were to do a real test, I bet 5 would still be near the top of the bottom, but it would probably, actually be more later game trade evolutions like Rhyperior, or Magmortar that would truly take the prize. Basically, I have found that anything that is simply annoying to get, isn't going to get talked about, or cared about in the long run. Trade evolutions, Minus the OG 4, are just annoying, and the ones that require items, and during POST GAME, just not worth it.

It's a good idea, but I think they dropped the ball with it because so many of the new pokemon were so obviously made to fill the same space as previous pokemon, particularly gen 1, so they're easier to forget as their theming is already used. Even forgiving the normal patterns; early bird, normal type rodent, Pikachu clone, etc; there's Machop line to Timburr, Geodude line to Rogenrolla, Throh and Sawk for Hitmonchan/lee, and Ralts line to Gothita, and others as well but you get the point. Ah no, don't worry, I didn't have to do all that! In terms of paying for ads, I only had to run a single campaign for this video, and it was actually unrelated to Pokemon. Google just won't give specific numbers for keywords if you don't have an active ad campaign on your account with a bit of money spent on it (they don't tell you exactly how much you need to spend, but it's not very much, only a few days worth of having a campaign up and running is enough!) From there I used the keyword tool which thankfully lets you paste in a list of keywords, so I just pasted in a list I put together of all 900+ Pokemon. Then I just sorted the results from lowest to highest and voila! Omg tho if I'd had to manually set up a campaign for each individual Pokemon, that would have been 10x more awful, haha!

The fact that 8/10 of the top 10 (if you consider the apes to be the same) are all middle evolutions makes a lot of sense. The first stages are the cute ones, the third stages are the powerful ones, so the middle ones have this awkward inbetween that isn't fully on either side. The term "awkward middle stage" is used a lot in the pokemon community, especially with the starters!

There's a free way to do this: you just have to define things a bit differently. Instead of having it be based on how many searches, you could base it on how many times the word is mentioned online in Google's database. Notes from a scientist after watching: 1) You evaluated search popularity, not popularity (for English speakers). If you do a similar video in the future I would recommend doing evolution lines instead of individual Pokémon. 6 of the 10 lines were middle stages, with 4 of those being relatively popular from my experience, but generally people would look up either the final stage for the final stats and such or the first stage for the cute aspect of the baby, while the middle stages don’t have as much a reason to be searched for (ie: chimchar is adorable, and infernape is cool and strong and has the final stats, so while monferno is also cool I typically wouldn’t search for it) so it makes sense to be skewed towards middle stage pokemon being the least searched, even tho they may be more popular than certain final or first stage Pokémon

I think with most middle evolutions, you don’t really look them up. With first stages, you look up “where to find Vanillite” for example. For the final forms, you look up things like “Vanilluxe stats” “Vanilluxe moves” more competitive mindset searches. As for the elemental monkeys and watchdog, you find their pre evolved forms all fairly easily in their most recent games (X and Y if I recall correctly) and they never end up that strong or viable competitively.

Being a middle evolution is a big detriment to the level of interest people have in a Pokemon. They're not the form you're usually going to catch or hatch, and not the form that you're going to use competitively nor in the majority of a casual playthrough. One issue that is likely to skew the results is that most of these are middle evolutions, which people are unlikely to search for. If I want to use the Venipede line in my in-game team, I'd search for Venipede to find its location. If I want to use the Venipede line in battles against other players, I'd search for Scolipede and what are good strategies for it. There's not really a scenario where searching for the middle evolution is the way to go. As for the Simis and Watchog, I guess this just means that very few people want to use them at all. And another reason for Gen 5's unpopularity likely stems from the lower sales of these games. A lot more people own XY, SM, SwSh and so on than BW so people are more likely to search for those games' Pokémon.

@@pokemonspinofffan767 Haha ya I can see why you might be confused. I made it for a (for-fun) contest a decade ago. I didn't feel like using my face anymore for my profile, and I didn't have many other custom icons around to use (or know what else to make), so I reused it because I like it. Even if it's from a generation I don't really like.

I noticed that 6 of the pokemon on the list are middle pokemon. It makes sense that more people would look for the final and beginning forms of a pokemon line rather than the middle form. It is odd that all 10 of them evolved exactly once

You know you're a pokemon nerd when you can identify a niche pokemon that is blurred By the way, the elemental monkeys are considered unpopular but I'm surprised they're some of the least searched for. Theyre given to you near the beginning of black and white and they can be found in the first forest in x and y. I would've expected more people searching them to see if they should use it or not Also watchog is pretty surprising to me. It's a big part of the early game in super mystery dungeon along with being the evolution of the Gen 5 regional rodent Also since you asked at the end my favorite pokemon I pumpkaboo, I don't have a least favorite :)

I'm willing to bet 99% of players just search the name of first forms of the monkeys.

I'd be curious to see the least popular evolution line searched since singular evolutions of Pokemon are as likely to be searched

My take is they're all middle stages because well, people are googling the first stages to find where to catch them, and the final stages for their stats No reason to search for the middle stage at all
