For your brilliant and focused mind, for your unparalleled work ethic, for your simple and childlike nature, for your refreshingly honest attitude, for your introverted and reclusive demeanor, for your courage to be yourself and tell your truth without a care about what society said of you; for all of this and more I love you, Robert James Fischer.

"Bobby Fischer never made politics. He could be tough from outside, but inside of him he was as pure as a crystal. I lost because at that time Bobby was simply better than I." (Boris Spasski, 2008) I think they were not just opponents but real friends.

Well said. I know that BF highly valued his friendship with Spassky. Spassky for his part always stated that in 1972 Fischer was the better player. Spassky went on to win 1973 and 1974 Soviet Chess Championships: he was a very formidable player.
@henryseidel5469

@@seamusweber8298 Right ! Neither Spasski nor Fischer played that silly 'cold war game' of the media. Spasski was a citizen of France later on, and Fischer never returned to his homeland after playing Spasski for a second time in 1992, which led to him being prosecuted and persecuted. Spasski went back to Russia when he was very old, Fischer had to die in loneliness at Iceland. Two 'destinies' of chess players.....

Joe Macinnis I too was an eleven year old chess player in Tehran Iran. Much like Bobby, I was drawn to chess as early as first grade and never good in any sports. When Fischer lost the first game against Spassky, I cried. When he forfeited the second game, the country of Iran was in mourning. After game six, I knew! Everybody knew!! Bobby Fischer was the greatest chess player ever lived. Legend.

@@sweet_stranger114 Fischer and Morphy are better than Carlsen and Kasparov. Morphy is the goat, Fischer is in 2nd place, Carlsen is in 3rd place, Kasparov is in 4th place. With rating inflation after a long period of time...finally, Fischer's world record rating was broken by Kasparov...Karpov never broke Fischer's rating. Plus, Fischer invented Fischer random chess, so Fischer would be a beast at the game he invented...Fischer would beat both Kasparov and Carlsen at Fischer random. Carlsen struggles at Fischer random...he struggles against Wesley So and Nakamura at Fischer random. Carlsen relies too much on chess engine opening prep and chess engine stuff...he doesn't have as much creativity as Fischer did. Morphy led by a huger gap than any of the other three when it comes to era vs era. Fischer won 20 consecutive games...something that only Morphy did maybe. And Fischer dominated with 6-0 scores and stuff...something that Kasparov and Carlsen could never do.
