The intro makes the series sound so convoluted and it's really not. The "Trails" series has three arcs. Trails in The Sky. Trails from Zero and Trails of Cold Steel. Each arc is it's own story with brand new characters and antagonists. Put simply, as long as you start the games from the beginning of an arc (Sky 1, Zero 1, Cold Steel 1) you'll be fine. You CAN start from the very beginning of the series with Trails In The Sky, and that will give you the biggest story payoff by the time you get up to Cold Steel 3, but it is NOT essential. Simple.

I know this is late... but...Considering CS3 leads up directly to CS4 and what happens in CS4 kinda spoils some big reveals in the Sky and Crossbell games.... Its kinda essential to have played the previous games. Your comment only kinda applies to CS1 and 2, The Sky games and the Crossbell games... Brand new characters is also not true since a LOT of returning characters are antagonists and main character/party members from previous games..... Which will be more true in CS 4 from whats already seen....

i played sky 1 and 2 and both crossbell games on my phone with a psp emulator and ps4 controller. it still amazes me that such huge, epic rpgs were on the psp. the only game i missed was sky 3 because it's the only one on psp without an english translation. but if you have to miss one game, that would be the one to miss. sky 1 and 2 are one big game split in half, and the same with the 2 crossbell games, so missing one of them would be much worse.

This is a trend that is commonplace in the current Legend of Heroes series that started with Trails in the Sky. Each NPC will talk to you about current events and story beats after they happen. This does mean that generally the first town you enter is a recurring, almost hub like area, but because the NPC's are all so memorable, it's never a problem, and makes the games more engaging as a result.

An amazing series and since the wife and I do not do hand held gaming we missed previous games, thankfully they are all released for current console's now and they are fan fracking tastic. Easily now in out top 2 or 3 jrpg franchises right up there with dragon quest and final fantasy and slightly above the Ys series. I strongly suggest you buy both previous games (easily found now on amazon or game stop places) cold steel 1 is a slow burn but fantastic world building and character building, then 2 picks up much more and leads into 3 perfectly. Plus 3 and 4 have never left Japan til now so if your a jrpg fan supporting this game will get far more imports over here when they see (Japanese companies) the jrpg market is good here in the west now. Almost to the end of 3 I can say this franchise has been just a joy to play and get to know and we look forward to 4 coming to the west in 2020. We will forever be a fan of this series, it has been utterly amazing.

I'm speechless with Cold Steel 3. I finished it last night and must say this is the best entertainment experience I've had in my entire live, from a narrative and its execution perspective. This game is a masterpiece and I'll definetlt buy the PS5 update when it's released because there's so much going on at the same time during the ending, that inevitably there are some small loading times with every scene jump, so it would be great to experience this ending without any loading time. Once I ended Cold Steel 3 I felt the need to start Cold Steel 4 inmediately in order to see what came next, and I managed to play the entire prologue of it and what I saw is amazing... I mean, WOOOOW... the masterminds at Nihon Falcom are genious! Every person that enjoys reading a great story, discover new complex fantasy worlds and get to know and care for great characters, must play this games... they're the best there is in the entire enrertainmet industry (books, movies, series, etc)... but in order to better understand and enjoy Cold Steel 3 and 4, it's necesary to play the prevous 2 archs of the franchise (Liberl and Crossbell)... but don't worry about it, because even if those games are RPG classics, they're still amazing masterpieces that will surprise you... for instance, up until last night, Trails In the Sky SC was my favorite game of all time, and that's the second game of the entire franchise, surpassing games such as The Witcher 3 GOTY edition (which I love), Persona 5 Royal, etc... I can't imagine what Trails in The Sky SC would be like with a Remake of the level of Cold Steel 3&4, while preserving its escense intact (I have to say this because of what SQUARE did with its bastard child named FFVII Remake, which is disgraceful). Cold Steel 3 is a freaking masterpiece! And yiu shoukd play it with the voices in Japanese to experience the origibal concept of its ceeators because the english dubbing is missed completely the spirit of the characters and delivers something different from tve original idea. Thabk you, Nihon Falcom.

The Trails series really has no connection to the other Legend of Heroes series. It's just the 3 sub series of Trails games: Trails in the Sky, the Crossbell duology (Zero/Azure), then Trails of Cold Steel. There have only been 7 Trails games that have been with this story, NOT a dozen plus... saying that will just make the series that much more intimidating for new people curious about the games. It's possible to start off with just the Cold Steel games as Class VII has no knowledge of certain events or organizations from previous games, like the player would if they start there. However series veterans that have played the Trails in the Sky games will immediately understand references and recognize certain characters and events. Playing the Liberl and Crossbell arcs just add to the overall experience, each sub series can be enjoyed on their own without knowledge of the others.

An amazing game so far, it made me lose myself in the first chapter so damn well that it took me more than 25 hours of gameplay. Of course, I spent an hour or so making the food trick on the beginning of the game because they may fix stuff in the battle mode so we don't abuse mechanics, but they can't stop me from making millions of Mirra selling the best food possible with the cheapest ingredients ever. Now I've found some errors here and there, missing letters in one of the black records, and stuff like that. Sadly I don't know WHERE to report those issues so I hope they fix them because it's pretty damn simple stuff, and it's pretty normal for some of the names to be slightly wrong and some little words to miss a letter. Nisa did a good job for a first game, way better than Xseed with Trails in the Sky, the first game. I just hope they make a better judgment on when to discard an entire spelling in Japanese to add a "hehe" instead. I'm talking of the part where a certain class Seven old member encounters a certain ex-instructor on chapter one, and in Japanese she says "It's good to see you again major, oh, I guess It's Sergeant Major now with your promotion" but in English, all of this became "hehe". Pretty lame, and actually only part It got me cringy. It's not a story related issue, and will never impact the end quality of the game, but it makes me sad when a big line of that, that makes one of the most respectable persons from the Old Class to look just like a Silly Girl who will giggle whenever the situation gets funny, even if she's the most polite and serious person of the freaking entire main cast. So yeah, then again the job here is far better and superior than Ys 8 initial was, and I think Nisa's have learned their lessons, they want the game to succeed so bad, they made sure Sony showed the game on multiple occasions, so yeah, I'm happy to have Pre-Purchased the game. Now, what the hell was that tag price for the Deluxe Version, that came only with one extra Item than the normal one? That's weird. xD

I've wanted to play the Persona series, but it's PS4 exclusive (for the most part), and I don't want to buy a $350-450 game system for a couple games. I did a, "similar to Persona games" internet search and this series popped up Then I remembered that the third one in this series is coming out for the Switch at the end of June and the fourth will be sometime next year. Four games. Reading and watching reviews for the first two (that are on sale on Steam {I have a PC that can run the first two games, thankfully} at the time of my writing this) I discovered that these are in an incredibly long series spanning five different arcs. Boy oh boy!!! Unfortunately, I don't think I could go back to the Trails in the Sky trilogy, but getting the first two games for $52+tax seems like a winning proposition to me. TL;DR: new series with at least four great games in it and they're all on sale right now. Good bye bank account, hello late nights of joy!

@@HornPlayer02 This is late, but hell no, don't preorder it. I want the trails series to succeed as much as the next Falcom fan, but you need to have played at least CS1 and 2 to make out the story of 3. Even then, there's the part with Crossbell so you're gonna have to play zero and Ao as well, although it's not as important to the plot as the previous CS games, so you can just play zero and Ao later. Plus they aren't localized which sucks. But knowledge of CS1 and 2's plot (and by extension, zero and ao's, since they both take place simultaneously), is integral to enjoying CS3. Playing the sky games isn't required, but adds to the experience, especially because afaik two characters from that arc show up in CS3. Even if I want to let Falcom succeed, I don't want newcomers to feel as if their investment was a waste. Plus it can turn off potential consumers who would have otherwise been long time fans of Falcom. Meaning less business, meaning less games, taking more time, and less localizations. So Mr. Marshy over here is kinda being a detriment to the series future. So are you sure that's what you want MtMarshy? But by the time I post this, you probably already have it in your hands. Although cold steel 3 is a bad place to start, you can always go back and play the previous games, so no biggie. If you can bear playing it out of order and can still put two and two together, then it should be fine. Hopefully you don't regret your purchase.... Anyways, have fun! That's always the objective anyways.

@@HornPlayer02 If you want to buy Zero no Kiseki on PC, here's a guide on how to do just that: www.reddit.com/r/Falcom/comments/7jee3m/how_to_legally_buy_zero_no_kiseki_trails_to_zero/ There are going to be remasters for Zero and Ao, but unfortunately they've only been announced in Japan. Hopefully they'll make it to the west, so keep an eye out if you want to play an official translation. Geofront did a superb job in their fan translation of zero, here's a link to their website: geofront.esterior.net/ It comes with a couple of quality of life features like turbo mode and text backlogs. I think you're gonna need an emulator for ao though, in which case I recommend PPSSPP. It's a shame you can't support Falcom by paying for Ao no Kiseki, but here ya go: www.romhacking.net/translations/3679/ I recommend starting with the Liberl arc (Trails in the Sky First Chapter), but starting with the Erebonia arc (Trails of Cold Steel 1) is fine as well. Just make sure you don't play Cold Steel 3 before playing at least CS1 and 2. Playing the Crossbell Arc (Zero and Ao no Kiseki) is a big help as both CS1 and 2 and Zero and Ao take place concurrently, and CS2 spoils a bit of and Ao no Kiseki, but nothing that major. Playing the Liberl Arc also helps to understand CS3, albeit not as much, as there are only a handful of characters from Sky that appear in Cold Steel. Although you must have played ALL the games in order to play CS4, as a lot of characters from previous arcs appear there. Overall, there are two optimal ways to play the series: Most optimal/intended route: Trails in the Sky FC (PSP and PC) Trails in the Sky SC (PSP and PC) Trails in the Sky the 3rd (PSP *JP only, PC) Zero no Kiseki (PSP, PC, PS4 *JP only, fan translation available) Ao no Kiseki (PSP, PC, PS4 *JP only, fan translation available) Trails of Cold Steel I (PC, PS3, PS4 PS VITA) Trails of Cold Steel II (PC, PS3, PS4 PS VITA) Trails of Cold Steel III (PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch) Trails of Cold Steel IV (PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch *JP only, but official translations are coming) Hajimari no Kiseki (the finale of the first half of the series, which is coming out soon in Japan for PS4, no word on western release date.) Newcomer friendly route: Trails of Cold Steel I Trails of Cold Steel II Trails in the Sky FC Trails in the Sky SC Trails in the Sky the 3rd Zero no Kiseki Ao no Kiseki Trails of Cold Steel III Trails of Cold Steel IV Hajimari no Kiseki Alternatively, you may also choose to play Zero and Ao before CS2, in order to get a better grip on the situation presented in it's story. A lot of newcomers find this series confusing, but when explained properly, it's really quite simple. Anyways, have fun experiencing this amazing series. Imo, it's one of the best, if not the best story gaming has to offer. But be warned, these games take a while to pick up, especially the beginnings of each arc. This is in order to set up the stage for such a grand story, which incidentally is the very reason the arcs are subdivided into chapters. It might seem intimidating with the sheer number of games, but once you get through them all, your investment shall be well rewarded. Sorry for the verbose reply, but perhaps such verbosity will ease you into the series, which is known for having the most wordy dialogue in a non visual novel style game, again, another reason for the multiple chapter structure. Anyways, if you want more resources to read up on to enhance your experience, I'd suggest these videos by KillScottKill, who also worked on the geofront translation. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sKGJr6yokp-fdX4 kzitem.info/news/bejne/2Iqdy6SDh6qfiWU Have patience, and enjoy treading through the wonderful world of Zemuria!

I just wanted to point out to anyone that happens to drop by the comments here, since there's not a recent comment on it, but only the Trails games are the same storyline in the Legend of Heroes series. This is just the third arc. I highly, highly suggest starting with the Sky trilogy. While I appreciate that you are one of the only large outlets covering this game, it bothers me with this video and others that the person who writes the review is not the one who reads it, and the reader doesnt both asking the writer how things are pronounced. The monster hunter world video is particularly bad about that. The main characters name is pronounced "reen", rhymes with Jean, not "ree-an". A minor nitpick but it does irritate me. It just makes it clear that the person reading it didnt actually play the game.

That is correct. This game is not fully voiced just like the first two games. I actually find it really annoying. It's like watching a movie and only certain characters have voices while you have to read subtitles with the others.

@@souchoysaeteurn5211 Well if it gets released on PC hopefully it fixes that like it did with the first two when they were released on PC with more voice acting and then that version for the first two were brought over to PS4. I love the game series and I got use to that voice acting but it still quite annoying. I will hold off on getting 3 until i finish 2 which I still need to do and then do a second playthrough.

I played legend of heroes prophecy of the moonlight which way back when on PSP and loved it enough to pick up 3: Song of the Ocean also on psp. later i picked up trails in the sky when it was ported to steam and like the first one but fell off halfway through the second. this is sort of my thing with these games as i did the same for cold steel in the end on the vita, and both instances can be tied to one of my biggest peevs of modern jrpg's: the boss checkpoints. in many modern jrpg's i love the story and world and all but as i'm traipsing through i'll get hard stopped by an annoying boss that requires HOURS of grinding to level up and beat, which is absolutely insane. It feels like most jrpg's *expect* you to fight every monster in an area at least 3 times to keep up with progression, and i'm sorry but i sometimes don't want to do that maybe even once if its a game i can run past them on. Obviously I shouldnt be able to run past every monster but if there are some here and there i can skillfully dodge i should be penalized at a boss for it. So basically this grinding aspect annoys the piss outa me but i like the cheesy and fun stories of LoH enough to give it another go, so i bought ToCS 2 again on ps4 to try and beat it before 3 comes out, but this time i put it on easy to try and rush through it. still working on that, but hopefully its easy enough that i can just consume the story and jump into 3, which i'll also probably play on easy since its either play on normal and have to grind and hate the game so much i quit at some point or easy where there is almost no challenge at all but hey at least theres no grinding to stop the story. PS: the older games also had grinding for sure but it wasn't until near the end that i had to farm and i wasn't as sick of it then as i am now.

I would suggest it, unlike final fantasy, xenoblade, or other JRPGs where the story is not directly connected. All the Trails... Series are connected...that being said Trails of Cold Steel 1 would be an ok starting point. Think of it like watching The Avengers Endgame without watching The Avengers Infinity War, you might enjoy it but some parts might be confusing then you go back and watch infinity war and it all makes since. However, if you like Trails of Cold Steel and the in depth story, world building and character building and how it all connects, go back and play Trails in the Sky 1-3 as they start this current story. But I have enjoyed the story and lore ALOT. I started with Cold Steel 1 and 2 and wanted more so I went back to the Trails in the Sky. Hope that helps Vatch.

@Ran Dom nope The trails series ...its a very dense story. ( Dont judge a book by its cover the trails series has more world building than final fantasy+xenoblade chronicles put together) so yes its mandatory to play cold steel 1&2 to fully apreciate this one. And for a more clever analogy. Even though this is just the 3rd game of cold steel the amount of info you would have to guess would be like attempting to watch avengers endgame...without watching any mcu movie whatsoever...at least in terms of story/world building.

I think you are too hard on the series, you could literally just play the first two ToCS games prior to starting this one and still thoroughly enjoy it. Having played Trails in the Sky is just gravy. As it is, you make it sound almost impossible for anyone who has not played every single release set in this game world to wrench any comprehension of the plot from the Cold Steel series, and I just think that's an oversell. I know people have just played the Trails of Cold Steel games and love them, even without the broader context of either the Trails in the Sky series, let alone every other game in the franchise.

You don't need to play 3 decades worth of games and a dozen games to get "the most out of Cold Steel"... you only only 5 games if you really wanna invest.... Really unfortunate you exaggerated so much. Very misleading to make it sound like Trails is 5 arcs. It's 3 so far, and Cold Steel is the third. There are characters from the first 2 arcs in Cold Steel - but nothing from the older legend of heroes games. TRAILS is its own subseries... Trails in the Sky are games 1, 2 and 3 and Trails from Zero/Azure are games 4 and 5. Cold Steel is technically the 6th game... I wish you got that correct because it's an otherwise great video but making it sound like there's so much is very misleading and might turn people off.

I can't enjoy this game. The number of pointless dialogues and slow pacing just put me to sleep. Every few minutes you can just put off controller because you have to read text that goes on forever, it's actually more visual novel with some sort of interactivity than jRPG. Crafts are so overpowered, that they make arts attacks useless and completely remove variety in combat. On normal common enemies have 0 difficulty, you just have to spam crafts and you can win anything without any strategy, even healing, or checking enemies weakness. For jRPG, it's also extremely linear.

The entire intro, the first hour you play is a huge pacing issue. Heck, calling it an issue is an understatement. Way too many cutscenes that have slow dialogue with way too much main-character wank (which you don't even see until the end of the introduction), way too many flashy long animations and way too many skills for anything to mean anything. They should just cut away all the crap, like 90% of the intro. With so much redundant stuff you might as well be buttonmashing as everything becomes meanless in that mess.
