I used to judge LoK a lot more harshly on my teenage years. Now, there are still some aspects I do not like but if I ignore them I am able to enjoy the show just as much! Also, the more I think about it, the more I believe the advancement in technology, along with the problems of the city (triad crime, lower classes on brink of rebellion, ineffective government) and the rapid industrialization might be a reference to the Century of Humiliation era of China.

I've always seen it this way: ATLA is about a person becoming "The Avatar"(accepting their role and purpose in the world without giving up who they are, hence the ending) and TLOK is about an Avatar becoming a "Person"(Korra knew since she was a child that she was the Avatar and was excited for her role, she dreamed of the glory and adventures she had to the point that it became her identity, which is why Amon is such a dangerous opponent since he wants to destroy her "identity", and TLOK is about learning how to be someone outside of her title, and accepting the flaws that come with being human) Also, I feel like Aang would have been more at home in the TLOK universe since he was such a pacifist and looked for compromise since the beginning and Korra would have thrived in the wartorn time of ATLA where conflict was such a huge part of it, however their journey is literally becoming what the world needed which is why the shows are interesting since they have something to strive for.
@Ghilannugs

I feel like in the spirit of balance the avatars often seem to be the opposite of their past life. Aang and Korra, the pacifist versus the fighter. Kyoshi and Roku, the woman of steel who didn't hesitate to take decisive action versus the man who gave people second chances and mercy often. Yangchen and Kuruk, the wise, dutiful, loved monk who safe guarded humanity against spirits versus the go with the flow avatar who protected/fought the spirits.

When you think about it: In 70 years, we literally went from the first bicycle patent(1899) to landing on the moon(1969)!!! The comics immediately jump into the industrialization of their world post-war, since 100 years of war led to a massive technology jump, most likely due to the sudden release of technology that the Fire Nation had been developing and hoarding during wartime in secret (as is true also of real-life - both world wars led to *_massive_* leaps in technology and medicine, so imagine 100 years of world war). Republic City was the special joint project of Zuko and Aang almost right away, with Aang, Katara, and Toph permanently settling there - and eventually, Sokka also retired from being the Chief of the Southern Water Tribe to serve as a councilman in Republic City, as well. I honestly would not be surprised if, by the time Korra arrives, Republic City really WAS the most advanced city in the entire world, considering the concentrated efforts of the entire adult Aang-gang for almost seven decades. There's an excellent video essay on it here: *_Korra's Worldbuilding: How did technology advance so quickly?_* - kzitem.info/news/bejne/r5Chq5eYrHmSdmU

Yeah, haters tend to criticize the technology jump in korra, but they tend to forget that a large chunk of the population literally have superpowers in their disposal. Non-spoiler info: -This is about 70 years from ATLA (equivalent to our world's 1920s-1930s). Aang died "early" (compared to the average avatar lifespan of like 150years) because of his frozen avatar state -The story of Zuko's mom is in the comics (The Search) -Also explained in the comics but not really explained in the show, a herd of air bisons were discovered on an island in the fire nation (similar to bison in our world, went near-extinction but are being brought back) -Republic City is a hybrid of New York and Hong Kong -Tenzin (named for the Dali Lama Tenzin Giatso) is the youngest of 3 (Kya and Boomi), and he's in his 50s

In what comic was the herd of sky bison found?
@Kai-fb1ol
3 жыл бұрын
I don't think Avatars generally have an extended lifespan... as far as I know it's only really Kyoshi that lived an extremely long life (230 years), and that was explained in a comic by her learning a form of spiritual self-renewal through meditation. Roku was in his 70s when he died, and most other Avatars haven't been shown to live significantly older than any other person. Aang's stint in the iceberg explained why he died at a relatively young age in general, not just for an Avatar. He was 66 biologically, which is not young but it's perhaps a little younger than average for dying of old age.

I've binged both these shows in the last month and might possibly like LOK more than ATLA (which I love). I don't know whether it's an age/maturity thing or recency bias but Korra, her struggles & those around her resonated *more* with me than the trials and tribulations of Aang et al. anyway, you're the 4th reactors I'm about to watch LOK straight through since I finished both & I haven't felt like I wanted to or even tried to watch ATLA reactions, yet. hmm, I don't know, maybe it's just a current headspace thing but here & now, to me, LOK > ATLA. 🤷♂️
