22:40 - this reaction is one I see a lot and it convinces me that the people who feel this way have never had friends or family in conflict zones. When people you love *are about to die* at potentially any minute, and there's nothing you can do except act politically in their favor, even minor stuff can stress you out. Can cause fights and blowups and fallout. I'm not gonna say anything specific about how some families have talked or fought over military conflicts in the eastern part of a major subcontinent, or how people have talked about a Military conflict in the equatorial region of that same continent, but it can get as hyped if not more than this. Now put those feelings in an 18 or 19yo. Now remove all socialization and stability from her upbringing. And give her super powers. And tell her the fate of the world is her job. I genuinely feel for Korra. I'm not saying she's right to react the way she does, I'm saying 99% of people in her position wouldn't do any better.

Crazy how when Mako tells the president about Korra's plan he justifies it as "I was prioritizing my job and I was given a direct order." Regarding the change in Animation Studios - it wasn't a Nickelodeon thing. Studio Mir, a Korean animation studio, did the animation for Season 1. You might have noticed how great Season 1 looked - well that level of animation takes alot of work to do, and it nearly broke Studio Mir. They were having real problems with burnout from their animators due to the really high level of work load that level of animation takes. An average episode of Anime would probably have around 5000 drawings per episode, which might go up to say 10,000 drawings for like a Season Opener or Finale. Korra Season 1 was averaging around 18,000 drawings an episode - an insane workload which left the animators at Studio Mir literally sleeping under their desks in order to crunch and meet deadlines. As a result they declined to return for season 2, instead moving over to The Boondocks with its much simpler animation and reduced workload. Studio Pierrot from Japan was hired for season 2, and while they are a good studio they were used to working on the typical Japanese Anime workload and unfortunately they buckled under the expectations of what Legend of Korra needed. So Studio Mir came back to help finish of Season 2. It is noted though that Studio Mir were doing alot of the pre-production design work too, in addition to actually doing animation as well. So going into Seasons 3 and 4 they changed up the production pipeline a bit to lessen the workload on the Studio Mir animators which leads to the fantastic animation quality without the burnouts they had during Season 1. There's a pretty great youtube video about the animation on the show called "Breaking Down The Legend of Korra's Incredible Animation | Animator Spotlight" - full spoilers for the entire show though, so don't watch until you've finished the show.

I think it's important to understand Korra's side too Yes, she's being very abrasive towards everyone but her tribe that she loves very much is literally being invaded. On top of that she still has the responsibilities of an Avatar which she constantly struggles with because she wants to do right but that would mean doing nothing Her boyfriend betrays her behind her back (even though he was in the right to do so, it still is a stab in the back for Korra, especially when she already butted heads with Mako about "sides" a few times before) The city she saved from Amon wants to do nothing to help her and her family/tribe The amount of pressure she's under, probably combined with poor sleep, trauma from facing Amon and everything she experienced so far makes it very understandable why she's so abrasive and short fused Doesn't make her right, obviously, but I do feel empathy towards her struggles even if some of the people she's close with are getting the brunt of that frustration she feels

The problem is that being short and abrasive is what lead to the north moving in on the south in the first place. She pushed away everyone who had already earned her trust and friendship for not telling her what she wanted to hear, and blindly followed her uncle who she knew nothing about, all because he buttered her up and did a neat spirit trick. She’s gonna continue to be hot-headed because that’s who she is, but there is literally no reflection on her own actions, no learning from her mistakes. It was kind of annoying when she did it in the first couple episodes of this season, but now it’s just insufferable. The stakes may be higher for her, now, but she hasn’t earned any confidence from the audience to warrant this exact same behavior. And even if you can justify these specific episodes-worth of actions in a vaccume, if you zoom out just a little bit, it’s clear she’s just doing the same, spoiled, entitled bs as always.

@@Ny333OST I would not agree with that at all. Does he do some bad things? Yes - so do most people in the course of their lives - that is far too simplistic a thing. He also does good things. I would not class anything he does as "evil" though. There is a difference between "bad" and "evil". He is not setting out to harm anyone, he is just more concerned with his own well being than he is with someone else's, so if it comes down to you or him, he'll choose himself, but he would be perfectly happy if he could do what was good for himself without harming anyone else. That's selfish, not evil. And if he can help others while helping himself, he is happy to do that. Oh, and the actual quote is "For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." 1 Timothy 6:10 {NASB}. Not money itself, but the love of it, not "THE" root but "A" root, and not "ALL" evil but "ALL SORTS" of evil - so, the love of money is one of the things that leads to many different evils. I'd say that Varrick does love money, so there is still applicability, but it's one of those often misquoted things. It also does not say that if you love money it will lead to evil, just that the love of money CAN lead to evil ... It does not actually say money is bad or even the love of it is bad - it's more a warning that the love of money is risky.

We today often have a penchant for realism in storytelling that isn't necessarily "better," just different.

- I love how real the characters are written in this series ! Every character, "good" or "bad", is shown to be deeply flawed in some way, and that doesn't make them bad people it just makes them people. Korra and Mako for example are both toxic people to be in relationships with, which to some degree is most people in their earliest relationships before they (hopefully) figure some things out, usually the hard way. As for Korra's emotional state right up to this point I really side with her hard because her home county has been invaded and occupied and her parents could be killed at any moment and no one around her is seeing the urgency or severity of this and she's being blocked at every turn even by those closest to her. The fact that Mako isn't taking the life and death situation of her family as a drop-everything-emergency that requires severe steps to save her people is just wild to me, and the fact that Korra isn't losing her mind even harder in the last few episodes is probably a testament to Tenzin's teachings. Love this show ! | : D Also, I LOVED the reveal that Varrick was behind the stealing of his own ships and the bombing of the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Center. That was just great writing.

I'm with Korra on that one, her perspective is completely fair. And she was right about sides, Mako was lying to himself by saying there weren't sides. There weren't at the start of the season, when it came to finding the best teacher for Korra and being a good boyfriend, he was 100% in the right then, but when it comes to political action, there's always sides. The fact that he said "there's no side" before selling her out to Raiko is why I don't like Mako there and think he's completely in the wrong. The "selling out part" is understandable, he swore an oath and I would have understood his decision either way, there was no good answer for him there. But the reassurance, the "there's no side" before picking the opposite side is annoying. I'm not really mad at him, he's young and inexperienced enough that it wasn't on purpose, he truly meant what he said to some extent. But it also happened because he didn't take the time to think about it in situation where it was completely obvious Korra was going to do something rash against the president's wishes which is kind of bad. As for Raiko, you can't sweet talk power so being restrained with Raiko would have accomplished nothing. Politicians can only be circumvented or coerced either through financial blackmail (and even that didn't work here) or power plays. Raiko only cares about his reelection so he's not actually trying to do what's best for Republic City, he's trying to do what's popular. Maybe not involving themselves in a war is what's best (although that's debatable, Republic City is small and need allies to survive, turning their back on the home of the Avatar who saved Republic City is not gonna convince other nations to help them if they ever need it and it's inevitable that they will), but that's not why he does it. General Iroh knows that, he's not just risking the fleet because he's friendly to Korra. "why would he tell her?" Uh, because they're friends? I mean when my friends break up, they tend to inform me about it xD

As much as it may seem bad that Raiko didn’t want to help Korra and the Southern Tribe, I think he made the right call. Republic City is a United Nation, so it has citizens from all over the world, including the Northern and Southern Tribes. If Republic city joined, an international problem would become a domestic problem. Fights between Northerners and Southerners would probably break out in the streets and the citizens of the other nations (Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation) would get caught in the crossfire, maybe even join on either side or unite to form their own side. Either way, it would be bad. So even though I’m not a fan of Raiko, I do support and respect his decision.

See there are a few romance arcs i would actually like to see (especially in a show for kids/teens) that this show and ATLA kind of touch on but they either totally fumble or never fully commit to, especially in LoK. I'd love a break-up or an unrequited romance arc where they both learn to move on and have a healthy relationship despite that, it'd be a great lesson for kids to learn early on. And this show TRIES to do that they really do, but it has no place in a show with so few episodes where they can't fully give it the time it needs to not be annoying and rushed. And im not talking about the 2ish episode Korra/Bolin unrequited romance that is ~technically~ a complete arc. I'm talking long-term, like if Aang had a crush on Katara for 1 1/2 seasons and then got turned down and they didn't end up together, for example, not just a passing 1 episode thing that didn't actually matter.

(hope not) you…or most people…can truly relate to is how she was _raised,_ and I think that is where she loses a lot of people, including, seemingly, you. She had no money when she first came to the city. _She’s never needed it before._ She’s lived with the White Lotus, and probably an entire _city_ of people who _have never said no to her about anything,_ excluding going too far from the city. Everybody she ever knew down there probably _revered_ her; treated her like a major A-list celebrity at least, surely, and you know how they can get free stuff just by walking into a place and all that. She’s always gotten everything she’s needed or wanted, delivered as soon as asked, like any crown princess would. Plus, you can only imagine she would have gotten the best education available, and that would include a _whooooooooole_ lotta talk about the Avatar’s duties, how revered they are, how so many in the past would obey and follow them without question. Combine those two things, and is it really any surprise that _anyone_ would act like Korra does? Ultimately, I think it makes for a good thing, because now we can see her overcome the shaping of those incredibly formative years and become something better, rather than just being that off the bat. 2. If it helps at all about Varrick and Zhu Li…I don’t think his attitude toward her is sexist. I feel pretty safe in saying he’d treat her _exactly_ the same way if she was a male assistant. That’s just how he is. 😆

These episodes are fine, if flawed, but the next couple of episodes are some of my favourite from all of Avatar. Really looking forward to the next video!

I don't think you're taking into account that Korra's dad was almost executed by a guy she trusted and that guy is marching an army against the home she grew up in... and the home Katara lives in! Her hot-headedness combined with her betrayal will certainly put her in a place where she will do anything to help her people against him... and convince her that anything that helps hurt her people goes back to him. Remember - Asami is part of the new Team Avatar. If Mako and Korra break up, as a friend and as someone who put her life on the line with the other three, I don't think she is out of line to ask why they didn't tell her about the break up. I don't like the way Lin treats Mako in this arc, but I do try to look at it this way: WE are watching the show, so we KNOW Mako is right. Lin, on the other hand, only knows Mako as a rookie.... and Mako is not following procedure or presenting anything other than what appears to be a hunch... and so it makes sense that someone like Lin would be annoyed with a rookie doing something like that. However, it is Mako who is part of team Avatar who helped take down Amon and helped restore her bending. You'd think she would give him a little slack... Lin's treatment of Mako is the only thing that bugs me in Season 2...but I still like Season 2.

Tbf Lin is under a lot of pressure from the president who threatened her job so I think her reaction is justified.

You don't like Korra yelling and causing a scene with Mako, but you want to see Lin do it? Sounds like Mako really did get off light. I am pretty sure the president isnt going to help, so do what she can to actually protect her people is the best choice.

These 2 episodes are some of those episodes that don't really contribute to the whole story but it does have a few twists that are necessary to see, such as bolins movie acting and varricks true intentions.

Varick and ju-lee's partnership never really bothered me. He's a bit demanding sometimes, but he's never really been mean or abusive to her. He keeps her employed and pays her well.

i mean the employment or pay is no excuse for workplace abuse in general but i agree their relationship has never been abusive, he can just be a little mean spirited or dismissive. But also i have hindsight since i know how the show ends, so i totally understand where angel'a assessment comes from

Asami has literally done nothing wrong and she has the worst luck. Also Korra's behavior is totally understandable considering the end result of the south losing the war is her family, hometown and culture are all destroyed. Also its perfectly acceptable to still like Varrick, he's a profiteer thats still fighting for the south but he just wants to come out of it with more money and power. He's not really doing anything evil

Look, I like Varrick, especially as the series goes on. He's funny and an interesting character. But here he's absolutely a bad dude. He literally is sponsoring terrorist attacks, theft, piracy, and more.

Aunt Wu's exact words were actually "And then you will have your third great-grandchild before quietly passing away in your sleep". They key here being "great", you're a generation too early, this could be the children of Tenzin's kids.

Zhu Li - she and Varrick have a strange relationship to be sure - but in good and bad ways and some ways that are just odd. As for Unalaq, just an observation but - he set his brother up to be banished so he could get to be the next chief and then suddenly his brother is the father of the Avatar - that must have really bugged him.

Remember when ATLA had that moment when you have the Dai Li listen in on Azula's gang and they were saying their plans out loud, and how it subverted the viewers expectations by being Azula's plan all along? 33:58 THIS trope is exactly what it was trying to subvert. What a lazy way to make them realize they were being deceieved

I really loved this heel turn from Varrick myself, I couldn't stand his cloudcoocoolander behaviour before but this is where it's hinted that he's not just some eccentric, lucked into money rich guy, but it's heavily suggested that he's a manipulative, war profiteering bastard, who understands his eccentricity is a valuable distraction when it comes to his industrial espionage and shady business dealings.
