I'm glad I wasn't the only one who got emotional over the sphinx! I absolutely loved how they used that scene to give us a bonding moment between him and Scanlan, only to take him away right after. Oof. Scanlan really doesn't think he has anyone right now. His arc in the original campaign was a lot more subtle until the moment where it very much wasn't, and the slow build they're doing here is amazing. I loved last season, but the writing in this one has been so much tighter so far and I can't wait to see where they go with it!

Last season they stuck a lot closer to the campaign, and it worked, but it also limited them because that arc was so Percy focused. I think they're playing a lot looser with the story from the campaign, but it's allowed them to really tighten the story up and give the characters a lot more growth. If someone wants to see how to do an adaptation right, this is a master class.

Really impressed with the writing this season. They're getting so much story into every episode but it never feels rushed or cramped. Splitting the party to gain more ground towards both vestiges feels like a continuation of that.

That's something I've been pretty impressed with with LoVM in general - the episodes are DENSE, but they don't feel like it. At the same time, they feel longer than the twenty-some minutes they are. There's no time wasted, and it's pretty impressive.

Scanlan power ballad for the win. Loving how his story is being quietly told throughout the whole run.

(Bonus comment for extra engagement) Did you mix up Umbrasyl and Vorugal's name? Because Umbrasyl was the dragon in this ep; Vorugal is the white one.

@@kellyxiaomedia I remember Vorugal because he's the one that gets mentioned the most in the Hamilton parody. And Umbrasyl is... just kind of there. Which is another change that I like from the campaign - he gets to be a bit more active here.

I love they snuck the hourglass line into the power ballad, since there was a timed challenge in the corresponding episode. that said... this episode hurt. a lot.

i really like how they changed the sphinx challenge from a riddle/puzzle (which is more engaging as players) to a more direct challenge of wounding him, and also allowing scanlan to get a character moment for future forshadowing/set up for his character. and the only change with grog being that he stabbed pike in game because of a failed roll vs here its more directly his fault bc of the demon sword influence.

Really sad we saw the sphinx die. Spoiler maybe... I hope that if LVM gets into the later storylines the sphinx will make a reappearance in a particular library, would be cool to see him and Scanlan reconnect.

That's actually really smart if they choose to do that. On the other hand, it seems like they'll portray all the deities in more or less humanoid form, like the -Raven Queen- Matron Of Ravens. Edit: formatting

Sam doing his best to live the Disney Prince fantasy but in his own way. Happy that he got some nice focus(previously it was scanbo and thats it I think) after a few good setups, especially when I know where it is all going and what the pay off is going to be.

Cant tell if it was on my side or not, will rewatch in the morning, but there was some weird distortion in the higher audio during the "wound me" fight. But I have defo had a fair few gremlins in the works lately, so could easily be on my side

Moving Kamaljori to a whole other continent was an interesting choice. That and completely changing the fight, although I think the moment of Grog stabbing Pike had way more impact in the original game. Also, I think Umbracyl showing up at the end was probably determined before they moved the Rimecleft Montain from Taldorei to Issylra.

Hey Ceni and Kelly! One, amazing reaction as always. Two, there is a bit more complexity to the Dragon’s genders but and I can’t believe I’m saying this but it’s sort of a spoiler. Don’t know if they’ll do it for the show but can’t wait to find out whatever changes the writers have in mind to keep us long term Critters on our toes.
@bludfyre

And thus they show Critical Role doing their patented habit of panicking and running away rather than staying and fighting (looking at you, Arc 5 and Mighty Nein)... though they have now shown the other side in Bells Hells. Though the 2 times they ignored the DM telegraphing "this is too much for you" did have catastrophic consequences, which shows they can't read situations well lol...

@TenebrousFilms

Well, this is much more dramatic than what originally happened... which is probably the second reason why they change anything, if not the first. Bit bothered that the sphinx died, that's the only *real* change. As for Umbrasyl, I guess *this* is the wounding that forces him to retreat to his lair? They're probably splitting the party to get two vestiges at once; a shame not everyone will be there for either event, but I suppose they made it work. First the door, now splitting the party... how many more tropes will they break!?

My opinions is both party is in fey wild but one will go to syngorn (vax and the gang) and pike grog and scanlan will meet someone else in fey realm ( dont wanna say too much but some one we hear in c2).

I'm a bit confused about what level the party is supposed to be at this point in the story. Keyleth unlocks her ability to wild shape into an elemental for the first time, yet she's able to cast planeshift. I get that you can chalk it up to artistic license, but as a long time 5e player these questions nag at the back of my mind as I'm watching.
@Xackadee
Жыл бұрын
It's all about the medium more than it is artistic licence. Remember, the source of this story may have been a D&D game but that's not what this is anymore. In a D&D game, you're playing through it as much as observing the story so your capabilities _need_ to be earned, balanced, steadily-paced, universal, etc. The focus of the experience isn't really the story as much as it is the cohesive advancement of the group according to their choices and triumphs. These are necessary for a game so that the process is fair and while story-based progression would be cool, it would throw out that necessary challenge element for that medium. But in a TV show, not only is that form of progression not necessary, it's often even an obstacle to the pacing of your narrative and character development, which have the greater emphasis in that medium. For the sake of making sure that progress and growth are witnessed in a more palatable pace for TV audiences, it's better to have characters sequentially make bounds that tie into the story of their experiences rather than witness a jumble of these experiences and then arbitrarily have everyone advance at the same time. Doing so gives the writers more freedom to focus more heavily on individuals than they'd otherwise be able to when the group needs to constantly be involved. Sorry for the long reply but I like talking about this stuff.

If I remember correctly, Matt and/or just Marisha had some RP limitations on her only getting her elemental forms after she completed each corresponding Ashari Trial. (They've done similar stuff at other points for other characters too, only unlocking particular class features at certain story beats even if they technically had them earlier).
@isakoqv

I don't think they ever had an ambition to keep the show accurate to the 5e ruleset. As long as the power progression doesn't seem out of place to someone who's never played DnD then I think it's fine.
@majormajormajortom

VM only started streaming when they were already level 10 and are technically that level at the start of this show. Matt and Marisha had an agreement that she would only "unlock" elemental wild shapes when Keyleth passed her trials. Technically, in the campaign, she had already passed the earth one before stream and she did her fire trial before the Briarwood arc even which obvs isn't the case in the series and means we get to see the Earth Ashari at some point which we never really got to do before (and makes me excited!)

They don't have levels. They're just characters in a world. It's an adaptation. The characters of this version of the story don't have dice being rolled for them.

Just a nerdy "um, actually" thing, that dragon was the black dragon Umbrasyl. Vorugal is the beastial white dragon. I like how the different knowledge of events from the both of you color your reaction to the animation.
