It's worth noting that Churchward was eventually killed by a GWR Castle in 1933, as he didn't realise it was approaching on the line he was standing on. The Castles were a derivation of his own Star class design. There's a bitter irony in there.

So the GWR built locomotives outside frames as that was something they were familiar with from the days of the Broad gauge days. It gave more room for the cylinders and valve gear inside. The frames being on the outside also improved their stability at speed and their centre of gravity. Like a lot of things on the GWR they had a style they liked to keep. Like the next to zero weather protection.

An enjoyable video Sam. One thing you didn't mention was Churchward's idea of having six loco classes to meet all criteria and using standard parts. This is a major reason why the GWR were the most efficient railway. And also why many of their locos look much the same, being essentially upgrades on earlier designs, especially when it came to the 4-6-0s. Another advantage GWR had was inheriting Brunel's fantastic track, which as well as being very straight and level for the most part, were also more roomy having been built for his broad gauge. This meant GWR locos had a very generous gauge to work with compared to other companies. In the 1970s BR chose the London to Bristol line to test the new class 43 HST because it had the best track in the country which would allow really fast runs. My best friends dad was a guard on some of the prototype HST's test runs.

Hi Sam - you've overlooked the small prairies (45xx) modelled for many years by Bachmann. Churchward's contribution to locomotive design stretched to superheating and higher pressure boilers leading to increased power and efficiency, and developing standard components (boilers, wheels, cylinders) that could be used to create a whole locomotive fleet with interchangeable parts, making both design and repair much more efficient. The reason why there were not many new designs after the 43xx moguls was the little matter of the First World War!
@matt_acton-varian

It's good you mentioned Churchward wasn't alone. One of his understudies was William Stanier, who moved to LMS to become chief designer. Stanier used Churchward features and vastly improved the LMS stock so much that the Stanier designs were used heavily as blueprints for BR standardisation.

Engineers have a saying which is "if it aint broke dont fix it" Churchward would have had to negotiate with unions to implement radical changes but could probably get away with small tweaks so City of Truro class engines did not really need to be radically changed or upgraded. A wonderful line-up for learning so much more about British locos. Lovely. It seems that Churchward's work can be easily recognised by the boiler and cab design. For the latter, he apparently always decided to leave quite a cramped space for the crew. However, standards of working conditions back then were of course quite different. However, it seems that his rather confined cab designs seem to raise some questions compared to other designs such as Gresley's. Cheerio.

There're the tank engines - 5100 Prairie (large), 4400 & 4500 Prairie (small), and the 4200 2-8-0T. The 2900 Saint was produced in model form, but is very scarce, and there's also the 4700 2-8-0 used on priority goods traffic. He's also responsible for many prototypes, which proved his "standard" components for future use. Incidentally the LMS Black Five and BR Standard 5MT both owe much to the Saint design, William Stanier was GJ Churchward's assistant and would have been intimately knowledgeable on Churchward's designs, when he moved to the LMS he took those ideas with him and modernized the LMS fleet.

Churchward worked under rather cautious William Dean the GWR CME who Churchward eventually replaced. In essence the Cities are a Dean design with Churchward modifications ie the boiler, to keep the peace with his boss which explains why the loco looks old fashioned but came out so quickly after Churchward took over. The boiler however was anything but old fashioned.

The City Class were doubled framed, which was a hangover from when the GWR ran dual gauges - by double framing an engine, it made converting from broad to standard gauge possible. Quite why double framing continued after broad gauge was removed, though, is beyond me.

The first engine he produced was a double framed 2-6-0, which was probably a left over from Dean. The Double frame was interesting for two reasons. Firstly the frames were a sandwich of iron external with wood (oak) in the middle, which were extremely strong. The frames were so strong that they were used in the 1930s on the Dukedogs. The other interesting point is that the frames were a hangover from the broad gauge. Broad gauge locos had their wheels outside of the frames and the standard gauge on the inside frames with the coupling rods on the outside. The other 4-4-0 was the Dukedog in th 1930s.

An excellent film, Sam. I like such "crossover" videos between models and the actual prototypes. And what a great character to choose as the subject matter: the man who defined "The Great Western Way"! As you say, many of Churchward's designs lasted until the end of steam on the Western Region in 1965. Amazing. Watching the 2800 in action reminded me that in the era of private owner wagons, freight trains struggled to maintain an average speed of 15mph, which didn't include all the stops needed to adjust the brakes at the start and end of gradients. Things didn't really improve significantly until the introduction of air braked, block trains.

Really interesting video! - I love the moguls - they used to reach parts of the network other GWR types didn't: I remember seeing one arrive in Tonbridge (with a passenger train from Reading) in the early 1960s. Shame there isn't a model available of the Great Bear (I gather there was a kit ages ago, by Oakville) - but, as you said about the Duke of Gloucester, it would be attractive mainly to collectors, as very few layouts would have a use for it. Still, it would look good beside the rail-motor, as GJC's largest and smallest. I understand why you didn't feature the 1361 class, though it would again illustrate the range of Churchward's loco designs. I was wondering if he had designed a paanier tank - archetypal GWR - but it seems not, though he rebuilt a lot of older 0-6-0T locos with pannier tanks! Look forward as always to your next video

One of the saddest things about those who claim that City of Truro didn't manage 100 mph is that they miss the point that that was just a random run. There was nothing special about it apart from Rous-Marten being a passenger. It "probably" did 100 mph that day - but more importantly, it shows that these locos were probably doing 100 all the time, day in day out.
@joshslater2426
9 күн бұрын
That’s the odd thing about the record. Because of the limited speed measuring capabilities of the time, it’s possible that hundreds of locos reached the magic 100mph and we’ll never know. I did hear that a Lancashire and Yorkshire Atlantic reputedly reached 100mph, but that record doesn’t even come up most of the time.
@RCassinello
9 күн бұрын
@@joshslater2426 I can believe that, totally. There's nothing especially exceptional about that specific speed. So many locos were travelling "around" that speed at the time that it's more about how accurate the man with the stop watch was. What annoys me more about the Flying Scotsman brigade is that they'd rather pass the record to Germany than accept the GWR did it first. :/

Hi Sam, there are actually a few more Churchward designs that have been made for OO scale that you didnt feature in this video. The little Hornby Railroad 101 tank, as innacurate as that model may be, was of a Churchward design. The 1361 Class was also Churchward's, and that is a design you have examples of. Another is the Saint, but the only model of that is the ancient Hornby one, created using Tri-Ang's Hall Class. Dapol have models of his 3100 Large Prairie on the way, unsure if those have been released yet though. Hornby did a model of the 4200 at the same time as the 5205 and 7200, but i cant imagine you being a fan of that model 😂! Rapido is doing a model of Churchward's 4400 Class Small Prairie, and also the later 4500 Small Prairie, which is a model Bachmann have been making for years alongside their 4575 Class. Finally, Heljan made a model of Churchward's biggest loco, the 4700 Class 2-8-0, which is essentially an elongated 4300 with a much larger boiler. Hope this helps Sam 😊

City Class my all time favorite, I've got almost all versions Bachmann made, except the city of Truro😱🤣, that's one still on the wanted list, Bachmann did a splendid job making them. If I recall well, there are two models of the 28XX, the first Hornby version R2464 with tender drive, and then there is a later Hornby version R2915 with loco drive, and better detailing. unfortunately I have the first version, but I improved it a lot, with some fine detailing it has become one of my favorites. I've very high hopes that the announced Dapol version is going to be a jaw breaker. The GWR motor car by Kerno, we couldn't get better spoiled than that absolute jaw breaker… Sam you're missing one 😱🤣, a beautiful 47xx "Night Owl" made by Heljan, I know you're not so pleased with Heljan, but to be honest it's one of the best runners I have, lot of people complained on broken off parts etc. but mine is perfect throughout the line and full cast body, a true top model. Look out for one I truly recommend one for your collection… Cheers, Danny PS. I believe that the 3000 Class ROD (just bought a second hand Green GWR version this week and it still needs to arrive) by Bachman is also a Churchward design if I recall it right… You got it in black WW1 ROD version.

Ageing as I am my memory fails me, but perhaps a viewer can help. As a kid/teenager in the '60s there was a TV programme/series in which the Castle Class was prominent. Has anybody better memories of this than I ?

Hi Sam, with regards to the livery of the Star in older versions, what about the models of Lode Star which was released a few years ago in the National Railway Museum range and a few years earlier than that as a STEAM museum model. However they may have been the livery as preserved rather than an GWR livery when in service. I thought you had a model of Hornby's Saint Catherine in your collection but if you say you do not have a model then I will not contradict you.
