I think these guys are the best songwriters currently working, flat-out, period (seriously, I don't think enough people realize just *how* good they are; their gift for melody is just psychotic; like Lennon/McCartney psychotic). However, the ONE issue that I have, which isn't always, but enough that it bugs me: because they record their albums themselves - mixing, engineering, etc. - sometimes their best songs just don't shine through on the actual albums the way they should; either a vocal will be mixed a bit loudly or the drums a bit too soft, or guitars a bit too far in the background, or the opposite, etc. - sometimes they totally nail it, but sometimes it's a bummer because a song I'll see them play live, which is just *astounding* ends up sounding much weaker on the album. I think they're IMPROVING on that front, as the new single, "My Golden Years" sounds fantastic. So I think they're getting better in the studio and how the albums sound; still, I really would love to hear a record done with someone else; maybe Jon Brion or even Steve Albini - who could *really* make some of the songs pop out of the stereo a bit more. Again, that said, "My Golden Years" sounds great and I *have* heard a gradual and marked improvement in the sound of the records, so looking forward to hearing the next one. But apart from that, I think they're the best band in America - sincerely. Nobody is writing better songs.

The Lemon Twigs are incredible. Such an underrated band. They're not only great songwriters but they absolutely bring it live. The whole "derivative" critique is sort of nonsense to me. Literally every band or artist has been derivative of someone that preceded them but the great ones make it sound fresh. I think they infuse enough of their own personality and ideas into their music to make it feel unique. Great music is great music and right now few rock bands are able to match what they have produced over the past 6 years or so. Their entire discography slaps and is loaded with gems but I think a lot of people just couldn't get past their faux rock star image which in itself was supposed to be tongue in cheek.
@Teaminflament

@@Teaminflament I think it’s only a discussion because of who their influences are. Nobody gave Nirvana, RHCP, Metallica, Green Day, etc. shit for sounding like the older bands from their respective genres. Because those bands were underground and not nearly as important as the Stones or Beatles but it’s all the same to me.
@AlternativeSack123
Жыл бұрын
I think this most recent album definitely has the most distinctive voice to it, but overall I still find a lot of their music is a bit too similar to certain older artists that they’re clearly inspired by. Like, I feel like you can largely get the same experience of a lemon twigs album listening to stuff by 10cc, Todd Rundgren, early Randy Newman etc, or even their dad’s music from the 70s that’s incredibly similar. That’s not to say there isn’t still worth to their music and at times it definitely finds its own niche, but I still find myself feeling like I’ve heard it done before but better with some of their stuff.
@wt1573
Жыл бұрын
@@AlternativeSack123 That's fair, although I respectfully disagree that it's the same experience listening to them as it is older bands. Sure you can easily spot most of their influences on any given song, same as you can for just about any artist, but on a whole I've never heard an album quite like Do Hollywood or Go To School. They're more eclectic than given credit for and their influences stretch further than one specific era. There are some distinct 90's post punk, vibes mixed with a bit of show tunes and more that I'm not smart enough to call out. Influences I don't hear when I put on an album from an older time period. You're right that the 60's/70's is most heavily drawn upon and I think that in itself brings about a lot of the discussion. King Gizzard for example has had much more success with a similar formula but they're drawing comparisons to punk, metal, and lesser known psychedelic rock bands. It's basically become taboo to take any sounds or melodies from that specific time/genre of rock but everything else is fair game.
@Taylor_King

but honestly, i just realized that ive been watching this channel for going on a decade. its interesting hearing some of the word choice fantano uses off the top of his melon to describe the records he reviews. i remember i hit this point around the time Daughters last record came out where i totally barely checked for new music. round like 2019/2020 i did go through and listen to a bunch of Lydia Lunch and the bands on that no new york compilation. Led zeppelin (from 1st through houses of the holy) and some pink floyd records. i was going in with the mindset that its like nothing new was haplening in music for a couple years. i just got on spotify last year and the app/website puts you onto so much music that i realize that i was tripping dawg. theres literally am endless amount of music being released every day as i go digging through records. its like you gotta just let the music that was already put out sink in on ya for a second g 💯. because of spotify, i end up finding and/or listening to about 225 records between death metal, deathcore, and metalcore alone; amassing going on 1,000 albums cataloged on my rateyourmusic page. honestly, you gotta support the music or at least streaming because how much stuff you almost let fly by you just missed "im not gon' let this pass me by no"

Louie Louie, You Really Got Me and Wild Thing are the same song. People were happily derivative for decades, with no ill effect. If the Lemon Twigs have bought anything back from the past it's not caring about being derivative.

I love soft rock, i adore The Carpenters, carole king, Chicago so I am excited to check these guys out!!Also you should check out 'The Little Mermaid' by Vida and 'Janky Star' by Grace Ives. They're two albums that have stuck with me and I think are pretty solid especially for more indie artists. I'd like to see your opinion, even if we disagree!!

Saw them once. They got booed of the stage when they supported Arctic Monkeys

I mean, considering the stylistic differences... Twigs might be a hard sell to the typical Arctic Monkeys fan lol. I wouldn't expect an Arctic Monkeys playlist to also include some Carpenters, Bay City Rollers, Todd Rundgren, or Christopher Cross.

me, listening to this album: this is pretty okay I guess. not sure what's so special about it me, after hearing What Happens To A Heart: oh my god. I get it now.

II'm under the impression people my age don't get into new music as easily as we did in our 20's. Hearing the opening track to this motivated me to dig deeper, and it was refreshing to feel excited about an album, and to want to share it with friends and get their feedback like I used to do years ago. That said, two points I want to bring up: 1- When forecasting, analysts won't deviate too far from pre-existing (more established analysts') forecasts ie anchoring. I've been looking out for reviews on this album and I am surprised that this review just came out, and pitchfork's review still has not. Does wanting to give a high score to a previously mediocre-rated band make PF take its time to release a score (anchor its rating)? 2- Is using the term "Derivative" to critique music helpful at all?

I was honestly pretty bummed to think you skipped this release, but seeing them get this recognition makes me so happy

I loved this album. The fact that it sounds like a fictional best baroque album of 1971 is part of its appeal.

My personal album of the year at this point. I wasn't expecting a collection of pristine rock songs like this. Exactly the sort of music I wanted to listen to.

The melon should give a soft 8/light 9 album AotY this year. That would be the biggest upset in formal criticism that only twigthony lemtano could pull 😅
