Good luck with the Riley, the best of the range worth all the effort. Bob

Great, what a find and looks quite solid. They're Vanden Plas 1300 seats and door cards. The same steering wheel was used on the Austin & Morris 1300GTs which effectively replaced the Riley in late 1969.

I remember those fuel pumps on my very first car an Austin 1100, they would regularly stick, and a few short taps with a spanner would normally resolve it.

Lovely car, pure class in a small package. Check to see if there is an ignition isolator switch as a security device, might just need turning on! Good luck!

My dad had a new one in 1969. I was a young driver myself and ‘borrowed’ it one evening. Showing off to my friends I drove too fast and wrote it off, about 100 yards from my parents flat above a shop they owned. It took some explaining…

Always a rare sight even back in the day , I owned one once and attended a BMC car gathering at Gaydon motor museum and there were maybe 50 or so cars there but only one Riley kestrel ! - mine.

The 1300 Kestrel was also the last ever Riley. It's possible that it started life as an automatic, hence the engine swap. The twin carb 1275's were once highly prized engine donors for Minis - I burgled a few for the engines alas. Sorry.

I was taught to inspect the points on any SU fuel pump after a layup , and to use a rubber mallet in the field, to give a few taps to jolt it until the workshop .

That's a great number plate OAP. From what I remember ,with these motors, they were great until there was any moisture in the air then they could be troublesome. Living in Australia I had the Morris 1300 with auto trans. and if that thing even saw a puddle it would cut out.

It’s exactly the same as the Vanden Plas, slightly different shape to the top of the grill, the same interior including the rear drop down tables, but different steering wheel. Plus some fancy chrome stripe effect on the front. BL badge engineering at its best! My parents had the VP when I was a teenager and I hated the thing but they thought it was posh. For comparison my next door neighbour had a new Reliant Scimitar, somewhat posher!

The numberplate: OAP. For a car to be so old, it IS an O.A.P! I'm so glad you didn't do the stupid thing people do these days, and BLUR the numberplate, so no-one can identify it! Why are people so paranoid nowadays?

I think your Riley might be ready for retirement, looking at the number plate! Good luck getting this car back to living again, it certainly looks like a challenge! They were one of the prettier of the badge engineered 1100/1300 BMC's, and the front looks complete too ...

I see the door liners and Wood veneered cappings are probably from a VDP 1100/1300.Shame it doesn't have the original engine wth the Cooper s cylinder head and Twin Su's that was fitted! I had had a Wolseley 1300 lovely smooth car but these ADO 16s rotted for England..
