Ryan got it right. It's a love letter, but Common is being realistic about the prospects of love and how love isn't easy. Common is one of the true poets of rap. This whole album (Like Water For Chocolate) is a classic album. Production here is handled by J Dilla, another legend we lost way too young. Great reaction. Also, the woman in the video is Erykah Badu, world famous soul singer. Common and her were dating at the time so this was literally his love letter to her. Also, yes Ryan, that grape shot was trash.

"I used to love H.E.R." is a very well known song of his that despite it being a great feel good song, started a beef with Ice Cube that traded a cpl diss songs back and forth. It was one of the top 5 songs that made me fall in love with Hip Hop as a 10 yr old.

I watched your Eminem rap god video tonight and you made a reference to him being the dragonforce of rap because of his style being all over the place. You have done enough videos to see how hip hop has been influential to black kids who would eventually come to be artists. I need you to stay with me for the next few things I will say. I think that you two are ready for it, maybe not your channel though. I think you should react to or just listen to “white nigger” from Ill Bill. You two being metal heads. I think you would benefit from learning the history of def jam records. There is a direct link from metal bands of the 80’s and hip hop artist of the same time period. The same guy (Rick Rubin) that signed slayer to their record deals in the 80’s and 90’s is the same guy that co founded def jam records. Def Jam was the hip hop record label to be on for a long time. You guys have done, but a few deep concept songs and not having too much to attach to some stuff can fly above your head. I promise you two things of the “white nigger” song. 1. It is not offensive. 2. You will understand the references. Both from a metal prospective and a hip hop prospective. Dragonforce, slayer, Iron Maiden, LL Cool J, run dmc, bad brains should be household names to you. And I think you would actually enjoy the song. I understand your channel might not be progressed enough, but I promise you would benefit from it.

This song and common kind of run counter to most rap songs. Most rap songs are about poverty, everyday struggles, violence and reacting to violence. This song is about love and most rappers don't cover the subject well. Hiphop music often lacks the subject diversity of a Led Zeppelin or a Chris Stapleton. Which is what make Common a significant contributor to the art of Hiphop music. I luv and respect him for that.
@OrbitFighter
4 жыл бұрын
i have to respectfully disagree with hip hop lacking subject diversity. maybe the mainstream side lacks that but once you dig deep underground then that is where a lot of the subject diversity shines. for example shing02 a japanese rapper covers a lot of topics like love, technology and even literature
@m2c_tave689
4 жыл бұрын
I was speaking about mainstream rap from the biggest artist covered a variety of topics. And yes you can find a multitude of concepts coming from underground artist because they don't have the money men pulling and tugging at their creativity. But in the 80's to the 90's the biggest Hiphop acts would speak on a variety of topics. From Ice Cube, to Public Enemy to Bone thugs, the Fugees, Arrested Development, Pharcyde, Tu PAC, even Biggie and JayZ slip in police brutality, poverty, love, even depression. When your most popular artist set the tone on song topics. It allows underground artist to break through the noise with a unique concept. That is what I was trying to iterate with my initial comment. Only a few mainstream rap artist are able to do that today. Because the streaming algorithms say it not viable enough. Heck only pop artist like Beyoncé and Lizzo put out criticality acclaimed work. Not thinking about record spins because they have the power to do so regardless of what the spin cycle says. Because the streaming algorithms say it not viable enough.
