This piece is my submission for the January 2024 Ryan Leach Composing Competition. This competition's theme is "Cyberpunk Love Story" and based off a work of the same name created by Hardy Fowler. I created it in Reaper and used BBC Symphony Orchestra and Noisemaker.
The Lights Forbid is about the relationship between two people in a futuristic and dystopian cyberpunk city. "The Lights" refers to the flashy neon lights of the city and how the city forbids the romance between the two lovers.
The piece opens with a strong orchestral sound depicting the grand cyberpunk city. It introduces the main rhythmic motif that is present throughout the entire song, that being a quarter note, dotted quarter note, eighth note rhythm. As the grand sound fades, the mood shifts to a mysterious minor feel. This section of the piece depicts the hidden secrets that lie in the restrictive city civilization. Then, a harp line brings the audience's attention toward a specific part of the city, where two lovers meet and share an passionate, fleeting moment together. This slow section uses the same rhythmic ideas, but expands upon them to create a familiar but new romance theme. The moment begins to end when the couple spot search drones attempting to find them. These are represented by the trumpets combined with a synth sound and take inspiration from the spotlight drone near the top of Fowler's art. The piece proceeds to suddenly speed up as the drones lock onto the couple. They get on a bike and attempt to flee with futuristic vehicles of the city in hot pursuit. The action-packed chase scene takes the listeners through the grand finale of the piece. Soon enough, the army is able to catch up to the couple, ending the piece on a dramatic minor chord to symbolize the couple's feelings of tragedy.
