First of all, I am not a musician, and everything I write should be taken with a grain of salt. If I can put it this way, I learned 8 out of 10 links in the chain that I needed to start improvising from Claus (I had to learn some music theory on my own, and I had to create muscle memory by myself). If I had to choose his three most important pieces of advice, they would be: 1. The importance of rhythm, understanding subdivisions and rhythmic displacement (not starting on 1). 2. The importance of accents during playing and the ability to accent with both downstroke and upstroke. I only acknowledge my playing speed as long as I can control the accents. Anything beyond that, I do not count, and I consider myself a slow improviser (16ths on 95bpm is my maximum). 3. Bla, bla, bla - BUM (which I learned from one of his videos), or in other words, the importance of knowing where the "sweet note" is to finish on. I hope this helps someone. 1:06
