These guys have always amazed me. If popularity were based solely on how talented musicians are on their instruments, they would have become the biggest rock band ever(well in the US at least. I believe I've heard that they ARE the most popular rock band in Australia). Was cool seeing them live in Baltimore a few months ago in front of a crowd of about 100-200 people (I believe I've heard that they sell out stadiums in Australia). Hope it's not another 10 years before they come back to the States!

That's interesting; it's been quite a while since I followed every move members of TLE did, but I figured I would've heard about this...what was he doing in the tour? Playing lead guitar?? An interesting role for him if so, just bc other than "While My Guitar" (which is Clapton), there's very little 'guitar solo' type playing on the album.

Lyrics (mostly for myself cause im performing this xx) I see the city and it isn't what it used to be A million houses goin' up and down in front of me No time to let the concrete set before it's broken up again Don't care if it's historic, don't really care at all A hidden landscape on the brink of any development A protest rally never satisfied with development Both strivin' for a perfect world, each havin' their own opinions And so the city grows, It grows on and on All torn down All torn down All torn I see the city and it's grown into a big machine The streets are freeways and the parks are just a memory No time to let the concrete set before it's broken up again Don't care if it's historic, don't really care at all All torn down All torn down All torn Now I see the city and it isn't what it used to be A million houses goin' up and down in front of me No time to let the concrete set before it's broken up again Don't care if it's historic, don't really care at all All torn down All torn down All torn Now You got no reason (You got no reason) (You got no reason) You got no reason You got no reason (You got no reason) (You got no reason) (You got no reason) (You got no reason)

Right around when I turned 16, these guys become my favorite band, despite being virtually unknown in the US, and they remain up there, even just for the first 2 records (particularly "Roll On", which manages to duck and weave through so many different genres, while still maintaining all the while that punky energy from the self-titled). But anyway, one thing I always noticed, then and now, is...these guys NEVER managed to shoot a decent video, lol. Not sure if it's that they had crap directors, or were just uncomfortable with the process, but they always end up looking goofy and out of place...like here, with Trav shuffling around behind that kit while they're...superimposed over maps?? Who though that was a good idea? The closest they ever came was the Aus-only, "Who's Gonna Save Us?"--because it was live footage! The US version of that is an abomination.

I don’t understand why there needed to be a us version video anyway , silverchair had us version videos done also , there sound live is so bloody good probably the best I have seen , saw them live January 2023 Another Aussie rock band cold chisel , wrote a song ( You got nothin I want you got nothin I need ) as a middle finger salute to the us music industry about there time over there in the early 80’s
@mywhychromosome
Жыл бұрын
@Craig Courtney Their absolutely didn't need to be a 'US Version', totally agreed...it was all part of this misguided attempt that "THIS is how we'll crack the market!" and that there needed to be gimmicks etc for that market when everyone over here I've met at shows for them etc loved them because they were shit-hot musicians with a great look and, as you pointed out, absolutely blinding stage show...I remember in '03 I saw them here on the "Aussie Invasion Tour"--they were the opener, followed by Jet and then The Vines. While I did enjoy some of the Vines early stuff, it was always a bit derivative, and Jet, to me, was a fucking joke. They blew everybody else off the stage, but I remember at the time both those other bands were in very high-rotation in the US at the time. For some reason, they just couldn't seem to get their stuff exposed to as many eyes and ears here, but whoever did see it was converted.

Trav was kind of the resident 'punk' energy in TLE; apart from being a brilliant, very improvisational drummer, he sort of kept that grounded, rough and tumble, street-level aspect of the band going...which is why he quit, actually. After Chris' car accident and the long break that resulted from it. they got back together to start working on the songs that would become "Modern Artillery", and Trav wasn't feeling the new vibe...and there ya go.

As an American (I'm from.NY) who got deeply obsessed with this group around 2001--"Roll On" remains one of my favorite records of all time--getting into the band, their style, Chris' brilliant guitar playing, everything..ended up by proxy getting me fascinated with Australia: the music scene, the apparent national attitude, and eventually the country itself. I still haven't been, but I will...I fucking will.

But once the rhythm settles.dowm.a bit, I'll start giving it a serious look again. Side note: that's another thing I love about Australia, and you Aussies as well: You're totally aware of how awesome, and unique, your country is, and you say so. Of course everywhere has issues, but it always seems like there's a self--awareness and appreciation for what it means to be part of Oz. Whereas, while it'd not like I would try dissuade people from coming to the US of A, I'm far more depressed about the state of it than I am proud, lol.

@@KC-yi1td Ahh man, yeah, the food is one of the main appeals of Texas. I actually lived in Austin for a while, which is a great, very weird (in a good way) little city--lots of musicians, artists, general loveable oddballs, and the South by Southwest festival every year basically takes over part of the city with live music and etc for a month each year. But it's also a very big state, and their are a lot of parts of it, that--at least for me--were very hardliner conservative, judgemental, slightly kookily-Christian, and so on.
