0:57 *YOUR TELLING ME, THE WHEELS ARE POWERED NOT BY THE PISTONS!?!?!?!?*
@WillAlfredisMapping
2 жыл бұрын
The piston must've been jammed on the side that the jackshaft broke free, but the other one, the one with the locomotive flipped on top, still had a lot of pressure being applied, as the engineers cabin still has the same pressure and steam output configuration as before, thus applying all of the remaining pressure left that the jammed piston wasn't able to use onto the still functional piston. Then, the remaining piston would practically turn into a hydraulic press, applying tons and tons of force into the wheels, then the wheels into the jackshaft, applying enough tension that it would break the reinforcement, rods and escape.
@WillAlfredisMapping
2 жыл бұрын
It's physically possible if the jackshaft was somehow engineered to be this flexible and fragile at the point of not breaking the piston, but itself. However, it wouldn't be flung like that I believe, just a big loud snap.

I think that the steam cylinder head would blow off before the coupler rod broke off. I have heard of this happening on some old steam engines. Hydraulic lock provides the same effect. That is why the engineer will blow down the cylinder steam cocks to blow out any condensed water from inside of the cylinder. Great dramatic effect for the movie. Very entertaining!

Do you know how the valve rod is forced from the wheels? there should be force on the wheels heading to the rod for it to break, the only way this could happen is if the other piston(s) were forcing the wheels. If this isn’t what happen, I don’t know what did it in the movie if it was real. 🎥⁉️❓❔😐
@thedemonfoundthephone5143
3 жыл бұрын
@@kristinabegail The valve rod is actually forced by the piston. And the obvious jamming of the driving wheels caused the cylinder to force all of its pressure down onto it, causing it to buckle and shoot off. But from the looks of the scene the piston was not expanding. And I don't think the sidebar would allow the valve rod to move like that. If anything it would just snap the bearing between the driving wheels.

A lot of 1800s American steam engines looked similar. The engine in BTTF 3 was Sierra Railway #3, built in 1891, which has been used in over 200 movies and TV shows and currently runs at Railtown 1897 in Jamestown, California. The engine in The Lone Ranger isn't a real one - it's a prop, custom built for this movie and later reused in Westworld. It's very loosely based on Illinois Central #382, built in 1898, which was made famous as Casey Jones' engine. Interestingly, both Sierra #3 and the Lone Ranger engine are anachronisms in their respective movies. BTTF 3 is set in 1885, and The Lone Ranger is set in 1869. Having this engine in The Lone Ranger is the train equivalent of a 2020 model year car appearing in Terminator 2 or Thelma & Louise.
