The Last Hope is a documentary about the loneliness and despair of a man living alone in a home for the elderly in Bangladesh. After selling the house he lived in with his family, his wife abandoned him and his daughter never visited him, leaving him isolated and forced to live in an institution.
There is no hope or joy here,” he says. Health checks by doctors at the hospital attached to the facility are disappointing, and his health is deteriorating because he has to prepare his own meals. But he complains that the place is a “refuge” and not a place of humanitarian aid.
His only pride is that he has supported his own life with his own hands. The nine facility residents also suffer from a sense of helplessness, and none have any bright hope.
He says, "everyone loves their life and hopes for a better future," but accepts death, saying, "now we are just waiting for death." This documentary focuses on problems that occur not only in Bangladesh, but around the world. What can we do to help? I hope to think together with people around the world about how we can create a society where we can feel pride and joy in growing old.
