The Long Tan Cross
The Long Tan Cross was inspired by a poignant ceremony held three years to the day after the battle of Long Tan, Vietnam, on August 18th, 1966. The Long Tan Cross, built out of concrete and recycled metal was miraculously flown in by helicopter in what was still an active war zone. The song’s chorus is simply a reflection of the famous photo taken of the dedication ceremony led by a chaplain, flanked by two pipers and ten soldiers (D Company 6RAR) who fought in the battle of Long Tan three years earlier. It was held on the spot where thirteen Australians were killed and eight wounded in the rubber tree plantation that was Long Tan, ‘The Place of Shifting Light’. The Long Tan Cross is now a symbol of the sacrifice that was made by young Australians doing their duty in the tragedy that was The Vietnam War. The Long Tan Cross is currently housed at The Australian War Memorial) (Filmed at The Barwon Club Hotel, Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Images courtesy of The Australian War Memorial)
