Saw this being played at a board game shop once. All the players were old balding men who probably were in college when the game came out. I was interested and asked how the game worked since I had never seen a game so large and complex before. They mercifully did not explain the rules, simply saying that the game had too many to list. They were playing the D-day only portion of the game and said based on their current rate of play they covered 30min of actual combat for every 1 hour of time spent playing the game. I think the 12 hour completion time is a bit optimistic

While both The Longest Day and the Campaign for North Africa are quite absurd in scope and size, there's one wargame that might overshadow these two: War in the Pacific (the 2006 Decision Games version). It features: 9000(!) counters, representing, among other units, almost every named ship of each combatant of the Pacific theater, 7 large strategic maps, over 100 smaller, A3 paper-sized double-sided tactical maps for nearly all Pacific islands, close to 100 different logs and cards to fill out during gameplay, such as plotting air strike missions, naval missions, repairs, placing intrinsic garrisons, etc. There are also two rulebooks containing a combined total of 186 pages of rules, 2 chartbooks, each about 80 pages giving charts as detailed as each plane's given combat characteristics BY YEAR, one scenario books featuring 5 training scenarios, 1 mini campaign and 1 grand campaign and finally a separate booklet for examples of play and designer notes, in which the designer of the game states, that the full campaign, if played by a team of dedicated players, may be accomplished within the reasonable timeframe of... 3 or so YEARS

Totally agree. It's far more playable than CFNA. It's been suggested that CFNA was never really play-tested because it would take far too long and hardly anyone will be able to play it enough to notice The Longest Day might have more counters, but it's nowhere near as complex.

To provide some context to the crocodiles units, the Churchill ‘crocodile’ was a modification of the British Churchill heavy-tank that was basically the Churchill but with a flamethrower installed on it.

It also got a dinky small-arms bulletproof fuel cistern attached to it's backside, because apparently there was no place inside the tank's hull to store any fuel for the flamethrower - unlike how a simmillar modification of the USSR's KV-1 tank operated.

I remember when this game was released by A-H. They were damn proud of it, and they made it clear in their catalog. But at the time, A-H wargames were $10 apiece with few exceptions, while this bad boy was $54. The "practical problems" of Panzer Blitz and (even more so) Squad Leader were at least limited to ten bucks' worth of practical problems. Longest Day combined a monstrous rulebook and setup complexity with a D & D budget level. I don't even think A-H expected anyone to buy or play the game. I think they just wanted to be able to say they had built it, like a flashy but uncommercial concept car.

Back when I was in college in the 1980s, there were three roommates who were playing this game over a long time period. I saw this laid out, and it made me gag. I'm no stranger to wargames. My brother was a subscriber to SPI's S&T for many years until it folded, and had bought many of their full scale wargames. But this one was something else again. BTW, at the *same time* as they were playing this game, they were also running a 24/7 LARP with several dozen students (me included) with intricate storylines.

Stupid, stupid, STUPID game - I was playing Avalon Hill games exclusively when this came out and we thought it was shit even then. The official reviews of the game in the in-house organ "The General" praised it highly but then someone pointed out that considering the time between game release and review posting it was not actually possible for anyone to have played a full version of the campaign game to completion. Probably the first nail in the coffin for the collective board wargame mass suicide of the early to late 1980s, finishing with "Achtung Spitfire", AH's first real attempt at a computer game of air combat that used (I kid you not !) virtual hexagons and turn based movement IN A COMPUTER GAME ABOUT AIR COMBAT ! Everything that was wrong about board wargame design in the late 1970s and early 1980s...

Battletech is more absurd, not in time investment as we Alpha Strike is a very streamlined version, rather it is more insane in culture, there is no limits on unit use by faction because all factions are masters of battlefield salvage.
