I love this moment too! Having listened to the actors commentary on the film, Ian McKellan said that in that moment he reacted as if he was a father whose son was declaring that he was going off to war. It's always funny when a reactor first tackles LOTR, the extended cut. They all look apprehensive about the time - then bounce up after the movie finishes and says "Over already!?' "Like sending two kids out into the world." Yes it is. The thing with the elvish rings is they weren't made by Sauron, so while their power is still bound to the one ring they're not as controlled by it. Enjoyed your reactions! Since you have apparently watched the Hobbit movies, you know that Gandalf knew that Bilbo had acquired a magical ring. But which ring? "There are many magical rings...and none of them should be used lightly!" Gandalf had been uneasy about Bilbo's ring ever since he found out about it, but the ring had no stone or any markings, as if it were one of the lesser rings. When Gandalf first greets Bilbo at the door of Bag End, he exclaims, "You haven't aged a day!" and gives him a hard look. Hobbits live to be 100 as often as not, so Bilbo is very old but not unduly so. It is the fact that he still looks middle-aged that reawakens Gandalf's fears, for only the Great Rings prolong life. But Bilbo comes from a long-lived family on his mother's side, so perhaps there is nothing to worry about. Gandalf knows that Sauron's forces are actively looking for the One Ring, so he is taking a chance in letting it lie hidden in the Shire. So he rides to Minas Tirith, the great city of Gondor founded by Isildur, to seek for accounts of its finding. Once he reads Isildur's account of the Ring's appearance, he immediately returns to the Shire and gives Frodo's ring the fire test. Only then is he sure he has found the One Ring.

I'm always astonished when fantasy fans (particularly ones who were presumably old enough to see it when it was still new) haven't seen LotR at all. Like, to me it is the foundation of all modern fantasy, the epitome of a good fantasy story, the gateway into the genre... I wouldn't be half as drawn to fantasy had I not known LOTR. Glad you're enjoying it. :) These movies really went all out with practical effects and real sets... today it would all just be CGI... but they used forced perspective and props. Which is why these movies will never TRULY age completely.

I’m glad you mention that Bilbo was an unusual hobbit for exploring outside the shire. Many movie watchers (understandably) wonder why Merry and especially Pippin (who, let’s be real, is the problem rather than Merry lol) are “allowed” on this journey. XD But that adventurousness that both share is a rare quality in hobbits. But in real life, “heroes” are often the people who actually do it, not necessarily those you expect will.

Gandalf is a "Maia". One of five Maiar that the Valar sent to Middle Earth long, long ago. The Valar (the "Gods") sent five Maiar (think of them as Angels or Demigods) to Middle-earth to help contest the evil of the fallen Maiar (Sauron and Balrogs). Yes, in a sense, Gandalf and the Balrog are brothers. They had great skills of hand and mind and assumed the guise of Men, seemingly old but of great vigor. Their mission was to guide Elves and Men by gaining trust and spreading knowledge, not by ruling them with fear and force. They were known as the "Istari" or Wizards. These Maiar/Istari were: Gandalf the Grey, (later Gandalf the White) Saruman the White (Curumo or Curunír; later "Saruman of Many Colors") Radagast the Brown (Aiwendil) Alatar and Pallando, the "Blue Wizards" (for their sea-blue robes, they went East and disappeared) Gandalf was known by the following names: Olórin (his "true name" as a Maia) Gandalf (Men, Hobbits, in the North) Mithrandir (Elves : "Grey Pilgrim" or "Grey Wanderer") Incánus (Gondor / in the South, possibly "Mind Ruler" or "Mind Master") Tharkûn (Dwarves : "Staff Man") Greyhame (Rohan : "Grey Cloak") The Grey Pilgrim (Elves & friends of elves) Stormcrow (by King Théoden of Rohan, due to Gandalf chasing trouble) White Rider (by some of Edoras) Láthspell (derogatory name by Grima Wormtongue : "Bad News") Old Greybeard Gandalf the Wandering Wizard

Sarumon and Gandalf aren’t actually old men, they’re Meiar which are immortal spirits. They just took on those forms

Might be the greatest story ever told. So cool you finally get to see it. And interesting that you played LOTRO before watching or reading the books!

@@mikelarsen5836 A bit melodramatic. Also, it's sad to say that Tolkien fans in the last year have demonstrated themselves to be more toxic than even the Star Wars fanbase. Tolkien would be ashamed of what many of his fans have become.

@@Cthulhu013 ROP is as bad as it was expressed. All the nonsense saying what we think about certain parts of it are one big lie. Sorry man, it's not our Tolkien, it's simply more TOKEN, which is NOT okay. Not to mention it literally screwed up the timeline all together and turning characters into what they are not is not the only thing, watch SunSpren, she's very based and you'll be amazed, especially Lex Morningstar. Check out Nazgol channel video titled Galadriel. She's very very based and eloquent. She's got real elven spirit.

@@Makkaru112 I've seen dozens of hours worth of breakdowns about ROP made before and after the release. I am well acquainted with the talking points. I also agree to a great extent with many of the points made. What I don't agree with is the toxicity and vitriol aimed toward the creators, the cast, and anybody who somehow managed to enjoy the product. I also dislike the lack of nuance of opinions on the show. There are good scenes contained within, but often are given no credit by those expressing toxic views. There's also an alarming degree of racism, sexism and generally bigoted talking points often hidden behind the excuse of 'Tolkien's lore' as if that justifies the opinions. It might not always be outright said, but if you pay attention to who is actually being toxic about ROP (Shadiversity for example), you'll usually find that they fall within right leaning circles and have usually expressed such disgusting views in the past. Doesn't take a genius to figure out their internal motivations for criticizing ROP so harshly. The product and the creators of ROP represents a culture and lifestyle they seek to destroy, often for religious purposes. The criticism is also massively overblown. It's an adaption. It doesn't ruin the films. It doesn't ruin the books. It doesn't ruin Tolkien's vision. Disappointment does not warrant toxicity.

And then there are those like myself, who read commentary like yours.... ...And wonder how you cannot recognize it is your own projection and assumptions creating toxicity and bizarre talking points as re JRRT and LotR. RoP is absolute trash on every level, from quality of sets to acting skills to scripts and anti canon- only further nuked by the insistence on "reimagining it for modern views". If you dislike the original material and messages so much, then stop trying to make money off the legend! And know that toxicity you find is leaching from your own soul into everything around you.

@@seaneendelong8065 "...And wonder how you cannot recognize it is your own projection and assumptions creating toxicity and bizarre talking points as re JRRT and LotR." Because I am responding to toxicity. Not creating it. People had already judged RoP before it was released, before they'd even seen it. People were upset about females in the cast. They were upset about black people. They were upset about anything they could interpret as "woke" being involved. "RoP is absolute trash on every level, from quality of sets to acting skills to scripts and anti canon- only further nuked by the insistence on "reimagining it for modern views"." Elrond and Durin story line is pretty good, well acted and I'm excited to see it continue. Didn't care for the harfoots at all, the elf whose name I don't recall, and Galadriel story was kind of meh, it got better towards the end. The Numenor story could be interesting if they tried to invest us more into the land. But it seems like they are pulling their punches because they know it will sink and they are afraid to waste time investing is in the people living there. "If you dislike the original material and messages so much, then stop trying to make money off the legend!" Sounds like you're the one with the problem. "And know that toxicity you find is leaching from your own soul into everything around you. " Cool story, bro.
