Real sets do have their own magic, and it makes life easier for the actors but a nightmare for everyone else. The biggest reason why cgi is so much more prevalent these days then back when LOTR was made is that it’s significantly cheaper and easier to do it now. Back in the 2000s it was simply (as crazy as it sounds) easier to build miniatures and large scale sets, than to build it all on a computer.

The Hobbit was obviously harder, but because of the very different circumstances. Del Toro had already set up most of the movie, and then PJ had to come in, with no time at all, and change it to be more what he would've done, with only a few weeks to prep, where he spent 7 years on LOTR storyboarding, planning, prep etc.. I didn't know how terrible a situation it was on The Hobbit, until I watched one of these videos on it. Now I know why it ended up being terrible in comparison.

When Peter said “this is going to be the hardest thing I’ll ever do in my life”…little did he know what a cluster the hobbit trilogy was going to be…

It took Amazon the same amount of time to make 2 seasons of Rings of Power, and look at the difference in quality. We've declined so much.

Peter Jackson’s films are timeless and hold a special place in our hearts. In my opinion though, Amazon’s “The Rings of Power” have been unduly ridiculed. I’ve enjoyed them thoroughly. Maybe not with as much vigor as I did Peter’s films when I was a teenager, but, true enjoyment nonetheless. I hope that Amazon at least doesn’t abandon the series before it is concluded, because there are some of us out here who have been enjoying The Rings of Power.

the entire Trilogy cost less than $300M. They were able to build real sets and film on locations. They made back close to $3B.

Crazy honestly, LoTR is such great films, hobbit hit those same numbers. Another fun fact which shows how crazy this is, was that avatar did the very same with less budget and just one film.

I cannot believe they used a real person for the penetrated body of Saruman on the wheel being dipped into the water. I was sure it had to be a fake body. That dedication is absolutely insane!
