I have an old friend in Special Olympics who competed with Loretta in the World Games back before 2000. I cannot believe Loretta was diagnosed as "mentally retarded" because it just doesn't sound right to me. According to my friend's account and my research, she earned a college degree and mastered a few foreign languages, just like myself. Maybe she is on the autistic spectrum but is far more intelligent than others make her out to be. I have Asperger Syndrome and was in Special Olympics myself for six years before I got married. I also worked in Special Education before becoming a mom.

an honorary doctorate is not a college degree first off; and yes , she really is slow / delayed but thankfully her cognitive disability is mild which is why she was able to work around and become functional and skillful, she is smart, but yes she is slow and she does have limits, but shes on the milder end of the scale of cognitive disability. that combined with folks who consistently supported and helped her have opportunities to achieve; is why she has accomplished everything she has. Most people like her has no where near the support she was so incredibly blessed to have.

If mom softened up on Loretta and didn’t treat her like the rest of her siblings, Loretta would not have thrived as much as she did. Her mom was tough, but never gave up. She did what she could with the knowledge she had. That plus the childhood teacher, her big brother, and that social worker who showed her a world of acceptance. I’m so glad her mother didn’t leave her at that school for the disabled. They would’ve babied her and stunted her growth.

The name of the girl who poked Loretta's head and called her "stupid" was Alice and she was a traitor. First, she asked Loretta for help in getting a petition signed and raising money to form a girl's track team. Then, she stabbed Loretta in the back by telling the coach she was handicapped so she could not be on the team. No wonder Loretta didn't want her as a friend after she finally came into her own, and I didn't blame her one bit. Alice didn't know what she was missing in the long run.

IWe was always taught that everyone was different, special in their own way. It was like we didn’t notice the difference in others. I thank my mother she gave us a joy no one could ever take from us. This movie took me back to those time that we defended and protected those that couldn’t protect themselves and we loved it. ❤ Kimberly Elise is AMAZING I’ve laughed, cried and done it again! I was Loretta and the kids that used to make of me, never finished school with a diploma. I hate when my brother would leave for college and I used to feel alone because he was the only one who would protect his baby sister. Today I am a single mother raising a child by myself because I worked and when to school with seven degrees but it didn't make me better, it made stronger and became even smarter.

Thank you so much for putting this movie up. I remember watching this was back when I was in the 3rd grade. Loretta story was so inspiring. I never forget my Grandmother seeing the commercials for this film and saying that our family was going to watch it. I could relate to her story because people mistreated me as well. Because I was gifted but yet challenged. . My Mother was like Mrs. Claiborne a single mother who had a special needs daughter. Although the odds were stacked up against me my Mother still fought through the challenges and I became a true success story. Those who wants mistreated me actually ended up congratulating me.

It reminds me of how much my mom went through having a child with sickle cell disease!!! I've accomplished so much due to her never enabling me & telling me I can do anything those without this disease can do. I'm 33 now & I still face mistreatment especially in ERs & Hospitals unfortunately...

Your mum did an awesome job and good on you for being a teachable child who listened to your mum. Not everyone listens and chooses to overcome their obstacles, others would rather be victims of circumstance and get pitied. Why do you face mistreatment in ERs and hospitals in general?

I truly enjoyed this story. Mental Retarded is God special children and they are as smart as they are allowed to be. I'm so grateful that Loretta Claiborne shared her story with us. It brought lots of tears running down my face. I never cared for the word retard because I always thought it was so cruel. I could watch this movie a thousand times and never get tried. I'm glad I got the opportunity to learn about the Queen Loretta Claiborne🎉🎉🎉🎉

It is indeed a very cruel and nasty word. My older brother whom I have never actually met has a learning disability. I do not know much about him, but I have worked with many people with mild to profound special needs and referring to them as retards would just be incredibly cruel.
@Swenson1970

People who mistreat others with special needs think they are smart but are really misinformed, superficial, and narrow-minded. They do not understand, or want to understand, that everybody learns differently and has unique personalities, capabilities, and limitations. I, myself, grew up with an unspecified "learning disability" but was not officially diagnosed with Asperger's until adulthood. Like Loretta, I started out in Special Ed. and suffered from bullying as a kid, then went on to become an honors student in undergraduate college with a major in French and a minor in Spanish. I was a track athlete in Special Olympics, like Loretta, for six years before I got married. I also worked in Special Services, like you, for over ten years before having my own children. A lot of famous people are believed to have had Asperger's Syndrome, such as Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, Mozart, Beethoven, and Thomas Jefferson.

Mentally retarded was the term used back in the 60's and 70's and probably earlier. Now it's not considered appropriate so they use special needs instead but back then I guess they were not aware of the implications of such a term.

Watching this movie reminded me of the bullying that happened to me in school years ago & the fighting back that I should’ve done, but didn’t do. I am very proud of Loretta Claiborne & her success. Her fighting back was something that I regret not doing when I should’ve done it.

Please don’t blame yourself. When our survival gets challenged, in this case when we get bullied, it is normal that everyone have their own reactions. Sometimes I used to fight back and other times I used to freeze. It is called Fight-flight- freeze response. I hope this makes you feel better and know, you’re not alone ❤I give you a hug 🫂

I was born with a disability called spina bifida and in a wheelchair. I went to school got bullied by 4 kids everyday for 7 years. And i never did anything about it i took everyday everything they did to me. And i never turned out bad or went to jail or prison. A lot of kids are soft now days because no one will let them fight. The teachers break up fights when they should let the kids fight for themselves. Like i did. I ain't soft because of it either.

I don't have any siblings, however, I have heard of many children having a difficult time growing up with a physically or mentally disabled or sickly siblings. They feel sidelined and invisible because the majority of attention goes to their special sibling and they end up feeling like they are unloved and not important. It is very important to make all children feel valued in the family when one child has more needs than the rest.

Also, don't forget Loretta's mother, Rita, who patiently and tirelessly soldiered her way through Loretta's difficult childhood and adolescence despite being a single working mom of six. And Loretta's teacher, Miss Rydell, for being one of her earliest advocates and role models.

What a beautiful story and great acting from everyone.👏🏾🌹💐 Ms. M. Kennedy, for founding the Special Olympics.👏🏾💐I’m so very grateful for the mom not enabling Loretta, and letting her know that she can do anything if she works hard enough. To her favorite teacher and social worker who cared for Loretta’s needs, how beautiful. 🥰💐💐 Loretta, helped mend relationships all around her, and became true friends with some of her team members and coaches. Loretta, ran herself right out of the Special Olympics, but stayed because she was loved, and she loved them in return. Thanks so much for sharing this movie!
