From a game dev: We often use UI from previous games as placeholder in the early development phase. This way we can establish a ux before we have the respective art assets. We need to be able to click buttons etc and no matter the game, things like the main menu will always have similar content, so it's easy to recycle. The still image with the "coming soon" font is used as a placeholder for an animated cutscene, which is still in the making in another department (or even in another studio). I don't think it was necessarily used on a demo CD. Very cool video, loved watching it!

You missed something for Silent Hill 4. A bit obscure, but you can find concept art for the ghost enemies of Silent Hill 4 which, after examining closer, you will find is none other than James Sunderland as a ghost seemingly reaching out from a wall. Whether his model was just used as a point of reference for the enemy or if there was ever going to be some kind of James Sunderland boss battle (sounds a bit wacky for me tbh), we're not entirely sure. Still, it's interesting.

The reason the Closer has that animation was because, and this is something I've theorized for a long time, it was going to originally be the final melee enemy of SH2. The Closers are actually in that game in a lower-poly fashion as the Mandarins. They would use this animation to climb up from the fencing at your feet and attack you as they did in SH3. This is most likely why SH2 starts reusing the Abstract Daddy boss and Nurses so much after the Hospital level. I know there's no actual direct evidence of this besides some of the developers mentioning that they liked the model and finished it for SH3, but I think it's fairly self-evident to some extent; SH2 is ridiculously easy compared to SH1 and SH3 and I think the fact that the main enemies are all close-range, easy to outrun melee-enemies is an indication that these creatures were going to be the final melee monsters and were cut for polish-time.

Man, that background music in the Silent Hill 4 section instantly gave me a wave of calm nostalgia. Even though SH4 is my least favorite of the series, it isn't by much, and the soundtrack is probably the best of the whole series. Akira Yamaoka absolutely nailed it with the calm and serene, but also melancholic and disturbing tone of a lot of the soundtrack, it's gone on to be a style of music that I really appreciate, where artists create a kind of paradoxical atmosphere in their music that blends both a horror/creepy aesthetic with something calm, serene and beautiful. Colin Stetson and a lot of Trent Reznor's work are great examples of what I'm talking about outside of Silent Hill. This channel's got me really wanting to replay 1-4 again chronologically, it's been a few years since I've done that. Cheers!

The mentioned animals models also come from an "simulator" game from Konami. The mantaray comes from a ocean diving sim also made by Konami, I think those were only released in Japan and forgot what their actual title names were but do remember digging through the files decades ago and sure enough they match. The chicken model was used to feed some other animal probably a shark in the same game. They were probably used as basis and eventually scrapped but still remain in the build maybe some script was asking for that model to be present as placeholder and if you would delete it the entire build would crash. (this happened to me to multiple times before so yeah can be a thing) Sometimes these files are leftovers from the engine files from a previous dev team also not just one dev uses a development PC unit but others too, one day one person works on it then when the work wraps up a new team member is assigned to it. Things are being recycled to the fullest. I mean even in PS2 era when they made SH2 and SH3 you would think they would have more privilege BUT NOPE! Just look at the place they worked at, as presented in the making of videos, it was an open building floor with stacked desks next to each other, people all packed up like lifestock in a coop, they didn't had office spaces or even cubicles. They all worked on different games next to each other (softwares and whatever else projects Konami signed them to do). It was nuts ...

My favorite thing about the series was the narrative or descriptive text when interacting with the environment and objects. I feel like newer games lack such story and character immersion. Playing a character with an inner voice or being able to interact with their surroundings makes me feel like I'm not just playing the character, but that I'm there with them. Another thing is the lack of descriptions and interactions makes me feel like the game is... "empty" or lifeless.

Bit surprised you didn’t briefly mention Downpour. One notable example is the “monocle man” seen at the end of the mine cart sequence was originally intended to be a boss (it has unused animations, and a trailer very briefly showed the boss fight). Also the prisoner enemies were originally going to be covered in clown makeup, maybe symbolizing Murphy or another character having a fear of clowns. Shattered Memories also started out as a wholly original concept before Climax went with the idea to have it be a complete reimagining of Silent Hill 1.

@@vycanismajoris6871 yep he was a very late cut from the game that someone leaked the actual boss fight apparently it looked pretty dope but the developer lacked the time to fully realize it, let alone polish it. Also there was planned DLC for the game to release post launch to play as that Lady Cop that Murphy encountered throughout the campaign of Silent Hill Downpour where you play the game from her perspective and it got scrapped due to Downpour being a disappointment for Konami, the ideas for the DLC did make it into a comic of all things, so we technically got it.

The unused Hesther animations are mostly used for motion blending with other animations. This is primarily used to help with things like the player controlling where Heather looks where it's not a animation that is played but rather the system determining where to point the model's body party depending on where the player is looking. This helps facilitate a smother animation verse unexpected results.

@forrrrestjohncave Yeah, it was the same way for me. Twin Peaks had been on my radar for years because of the influence it had on Silent Hill, but I didn't get around to watching it until a few years ago. I think about 2 years before the new episodes started airing. What I like about the way Team Silent used their influences was the light touch approach they had. It enhanced the material without taking away from Silent Hill's own identity. Too often you see creators leaning too hard on their influences to the point where they're outright trying to copy them. And with an artist like David Lynch whose vision is one of a kind that has led to people just making a mess of their own work.

I can only speak from my own personal development experience, but sometimes when you have texture files thatare really out of context for the intended target, it is usually because they are placeholders that fit the style they are going for in the end result. For example, the anime girls textures, could be for posters somewhere later on of a full face & so they grabbed whatever they had to hand. These files would likely have been missed when replacing. If you could dig into files from any game (even today's ones) you would find something in there that never got used.

The "snake" monster was probably based on Tsuchinoko creatures. They're part of Japanese folklore and basically some kind of cryptids, as there's no actual confirmation of their existence, though some people claim to have seen them throughout the years. The shape of the monster strongly resembles that of what a Tsuchinoko is supposed to look like. Tsuchinokos are also "snake-like" creatures and can also jump (one of the animations this monster got in the game files seems to be of it "standing up" as if to jump or attack). The members of the now defunct Team Silent are all Japanese, so it's likely they'd heard about the Tsuchinoko and drew inspiration from that creature.

I disagree strongly that the unused SH1 monsters "look too normal:" The enemies in the game are all equally "normal" animals: Dogs, apes, praying mantises, and sloths (plus a pterodactyl for some reason). Other animals, in varying degrees of distortion, like the (plucked, sickly looking) chicken or the manta ray fit the bill perfectly, and the extra-messed-up "frog" is like the late-game nightmare dogs: Scary, somewhat distorted or menacing versions of things a child would have seen and been very afraid of (or fascinated by).
