For centuries, the name El Dorado has attracted explorers. It's a rumored city of gold - a lost city somewhere in South America. In the age of discovery (and the rise of colonialism), El Dorado appeared as a mythical city that would offer lots and lots of gold to the one who finds it. No one found it, but it did manage to reserve its place in many maps. These maps depict El Dorado and a lake near it. But, that lake doesn't even exist. Nor does El Dorado. Then how, and why, did it confuse so many cartographers, geographers, and explorers? What brought them to the pursuit of a mythical city that's always out of reach?
