Hmm, as much as I love Ghibli movies, Mayazaki wouldn't make a film about Korean consciousness unless he could somehow slip Italian WW2 aircraft into it! Back in the 80's, I dare suggest that attitudes in Japan toward South Korea and Koreans in general, weren't particularly nice. I think the best allegory of divided Korean identity by a Japanese animator has to be Makoto Shinkai's The Place Promised In Our Early Days. Makoto is from a younger generation with, well, different attitudes. Not many people know this but the father of animation (Tezuka) was getting inking and drawing work done in South Korea in the 1960's. We don't know if it began with Gigantor (Tetsujin 28) or Kimba the White Lion or even black and white Astroboy (Atome) itself but we do know that Gatchaman makers in 1972 went to South Korea to get the bulk of the work done for Gatchaman because the South Koreans were already known as cheap animators who could get the work done. It's only fairly recently that Japanese anime producers began acknowledging South Korean animators in the credits. The reason for this is ol' racism itself- the second world war may have removed the war loving imperialist generation from Japan but it took much longer to outgrow old hatreds or, old bias if you will.

@aldiyarbot4983
4 жыл бұрын
@@Stevem Of course, all the history is the shared history, but Japanese people should decide on their own what to believe and what to teach in a school in their country. And actually, it is was not done by THEM as you said, it is done by some of the ancestors. Germany is a great example of what happens when the external powers force the history and system of believes; till today some Germans repent for the sins that were done by some of their ancestors, not them. Also about the history and evidence, I am not trying to defend the atrocious policies, but do not forget about the time perspective and that historical facts can be easily interpreted in many ways.
@Stevem
4 жыл бұрын
@@aldiyarbot4983 It was done by the Japanese and some of those are still alive so yeah if you want to say their grand parents or not, it was still done by the blanket Japanese. The difference between Germany and Japans take on these events are very different, say for example the Japanese government after the war was made of mostly ex imperial there was no divide while in Germany there was not the case. The Nuremberg trials were much harsher than the japanese equivalent which was a farce in comparison since the Americans did everything they could to keep the emperor from being held accountable, thus it became hard to hold any of them accountable not only that, certain A class war criminals served timed in jail came out and then became Prime Mininster of the country, this would be unheard of in Germany, these are not good comparison points. In Germnay there are bans of the use of nazi imagery and how that can be used as well as how certain groups can hold protests , while in Japan the imperial flag is still common place and every PM goes to pay his respect to the war criminals that caused some events. A historians job is to take the sources of history and work out through multiple sources to come closure to the truth, an event happened or it didn't, but how badly the fallout, why it happened and the inner details are what's important to discuss. If you believe in those ideals then you should not give the ultranationalist in japan full reign to lie about their history and push for militarisation again, that is their goal it is not to further understand why these events happened or what effect it all had.

So much anime has worked to rationalize or justify Japanese Imperialism. Think about the subtext of Space Battleship Yamato in which an obliterated earth sends out a WWII Imperial Japanese battleship to fight a new war, or Gundam where the Zeon the antagonists in the original series have been recast as noble and justified in every series since the early 1990s. Or in more recent years a stream of works that 'cute-ify' Nazi Germany with little girls dressed up in SS and Wehrmacht uniforms.
@Stevem

@@kentallard8852 I'm aware of it's issues but I do think your simplify what these conflicts represent, Gundam has a lot to do with modern conflicts of the time, as well as older ones im pretty sure zeon is more nazi germany than japan, though maybe there's something more in their later on. Lejis work very much is imbedded to his experience being brought up in imperial japan, bushido and other factors play into to his work however Leji himself is absolutely anti war , his stories tend to be about the individual rebel fight against an unjust system. and loli nazis are weird i dont get it, but that's a little different than japanese imperialism, it's own topic for sure

Nice research and exposition. Just a tiny issue because of course, youtube comments, right? "Ghibli" is not pronounced "Jibli", it's an Arabic word and the "gh" syllable means it's a strong G. (From Wikipedia: Libyan Arabic: قبلي, romanized: ghiblī, which means 'coming from the Qibla').
@Stevem
4 жыл бұрын
Sorry mate , it's far more complicated than that The Arabic word is what an Italian Plane also known as the Caproni Ca.309, is named after. That plane is what Miyazaki's named the studio after, but because of Japanese phonetics Instead of the Italian pronunciation, it morphed to "JI-BU-RI" or JI-Bu-R/Li which is awkward for English speakers to say So the Studio became known as JI-Bu-li/ Jib-li in English territories if you've ever seen an interview or behind the scenes footage for their movies this is how it's pronounced. Now I don't think there is a "right way" to say it because depending where you're from any of these could be valid, but as an English speaker i'm happy sticking with what I know right now. Tiny issue by the way, cus youtube comment, don't source from wikipedia, source from where wikipedia is sourcing from.

@@Stevem I was emphasising how put on your voice issssssss Edit. Yeah you don't talk like that in your other videos so it's clearly put on. I'm not trolling but I couldn't watch more than a few seconds of your video because it was so put on. Shame as you're talking about subjects that interest me greatly but when youuuuuu talllllllllk, like that it comes across as very...fake. It's almost as if you're trying to sound more intelligent than you actually are. Your retort wasn't great either so my assumption that you're a pseudointellectual is quite just methinks. @@johnboydojo This seems like a lot weird projection and immaturity to be honest , since you've only say you've watched a couple of seconds of this video. I'd expect better from someone whose suppose be a father, like this is just me talking on camera I'm a bit newer to live recording but I wasn't trying to do anything special. I did a lot of research on this video and I just wanted to tell people about it, nothing else really. If you don't want to watch it then don't dude that's your right all my sources are in the pinned comment, if you'd like to support Alex who broke the story in english his article is also in there.

Meanwhile at present time, the CCP Empire, now under the control of it's current Emperor, a present day reincarnation of QinShiHuang the Mad Emperor, is commuting similar crimes of Imperial Japan, but at a much grander scale.

Not a fan CCP in any shape or form but it would very bold to say grander than Japanese Imperialism although the potential is there

It is probable that China’s imperialism, despite its actual monarchy-related dynasties being currently replaced by a crowd of greedy autocrats, has long been grander than North Korea’s, Taiwan’s, South Korea’s or even Japan’s.

Like WW2, the Korean War might have been both a boon for the infamous DMZ border zone and a bane for the Korean monarchy, which used to be headquartered in North Korea until later moving to South Korea during the end of the Middle Ages.

Yeah unfortunately this sort of historical reality tends to get a VERY strong reaction from Japanese Ultra nationalists. Not surprising it got stomped on. If they had succeeded, it would have been the last anime any of the team made.
