A disused railway explore looking at the lost Great Northern Railway in Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire - The Leen Valley Extention.
We start at the Pleasley pit, mining musuem - start of the Skegby Trail. Which follows the former trackbed through the open countryside as far as Sutton-Ashfield. Excellent for walkers and cyclists and plenty to find along the route including the former site of former disused stations Pleasley East & Skegby for Stanton Hill. Culverts, junctions and ruins from dismantled railway infrastructure can be found en route.
After leaving the site of Skegby station, the line takes on a more urban feel as we pass through the town of Sutton-in-Ashfield. The former Sutton-in-Ashfield Town station site is still derelict however now very overgrown. The abandoned station masters house still stands by the entrance to the old station, but no ruined by fire.
After the tracing the route of the line as much as possible from Sutton, we can pick it up again on the approach to Kirkby Summit Colliery situated between Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton. Here we will find a section of abandoned railway track still laid down, reclaimed by the undergrowth. Former points and even a buffer stop can be seen from the trackwork of the old sidings for the colliery. The line wold have then joined the present day Robin Hood Line between Nottingham and Worksop. And that is far as we can go on todays explore.
Thanks to Jon, aka Physic Spies for this one. I really enjoyed it.
