Authors Lynn Rogers and Robert Burrill share their love of this charming district of San Jose with a history that long precedes it. (It was originally The Dock of St. Clare, where goods from the mission by that name were sent to its companion Mission St. Francis de Asis in San Francisco, by boat.) For a long time the town (now called ALVISO) was a bustling port, attracting the likes of Jack and (wife) Charmion London.
Robert Burrill had appeared on Bay Area Backroads, as shown here, hosted by Eric Carlson. Rogers narrates the Arcadia, Images of America book they co-created, Rogers as lead author, Burrill as lead photographer. “It’s better than both of us,” they rghtly assert.
They were assisted by editor Meg Rogers, who later became one of the youngest authors for Arcadia’s Images of America series, with her own photoessay books: The Portuguese in San Jose and The Portuguese in San Leandro. Composer and singer, Rev. Janet Child’s song, The Balancing Wheel, concludes this piece.
Before their collaboration, he had written “Milpitas,” for Arcadia; she had written titles from her edgy Born in Berkeley novel series, Also Edgar Cayce and the Eternal Feminine based on graduate work in women’s spirituality. An historic mystery, A Valley of Ashes and her 2016, The Last Piano Bar, novel set in Vahl’s Restaurant were to follow.
