I was 18 when I sat in the Esprit at the sales centre a long time ago. The whole experience of being elated to be in a marvellous British sports car turned nightmarish as soon as I got in the car. Being 6 feet 8 inches tall, I didn't realise that I had no wriggling room left when my right leg got stuck between the steering wheel and centre console. The steering wheel was locked, and the seat had been moved as far back as it could. The sales representative didn't believe me until he saw the unique problem and laughed. The only way to free me was to unlock the steering wheel, but my leg more or less covered the ignition lock. A technician was called to remove the steering wheel as to free my leg up. Pity, I couldn't get to drive Esprit...

I'm resident in Norfolk around 20 miles away from the Lotus factory. I actually did a bit of temp work for Lotus in the summer. Based at a satellite location but I had to visit Hethel frequently. There is an early 1980s Esprit (series 1?) on display at one of their buildings which looks great. My favourite Lotus is the wedge-tastic Elite "Estate" but I love this Esprit Turbo in all it's angular glory.

Cars like this are what makes me envious of Europe. You guys have all sorts of cara with style and beauty. They were all so unique MGs, TVR, Mini, Fiat, Renault, Caterham, Peugeot Lotus and Vauxhall to the major companies like BMW Porshe Lamborghini and Ferrari. All so unique and producing so many quirky and beautiful vehicles. From the 60s and all the way to 80s and 90s so many cool vehicles. Here in America pretty much after the 70’s everything is the same booring copy paste shared parts bin blandness. Booring 4 cylinders to whimpy pedestrian 6 cylinders in everything. Nothing handled great nothing great. We had to turn to Japan to get exciting cars as most european manufacturers had left the market due to insane safety and fuel economy regulations. I had a 76MGB that i bought when i got in the ARMY and it was one of the few cars i was ever excited to just get in and drive.

In the early '80s I worked for the UK's premier dynamometer manufacturer and was sent to Hethel to fix a problem and calibrate one of the many dynos used in their engine development group. The project manager was pleased that I stayed the weekend to complete the work so gave me a spin in their Esprit development car on their test track. Sliding around a bumpy corner he commented that the chassis was twisting so much such that the steering linkage had locked up! I also got a tour of their engine assembly area and a quick peek at their V8 under development. It was one of my most memorable auto maker visits. They even sent a letter afterwards to my employer praising my good performance.

According to an old (May 1985) edition of ‘car magazine’, the Esprit Turbo cost £22,760. The Ferrari 308 GTB (no fuel injection in 1985 I suppose) cost £29,100. Their summary on the Lotus - “Showing age but still the supercar bargain”. Sum-up on the 308 was “poetry in motion”. I don’t recall the Esprit being directly compared with TVR’s of the time, which were half the price and rarely mistaken for a supercar. The Lotus however (despite it’s lack of cylinders) was, still is and will always be a genuine supercar, if a bit of a bargain back in the day ;-) Excellent video of an outstanding car - love it!

The Lotus backbone chassis was a great idea. I remember a friend who owned an Elan telling me so, most enthusiastically. I think he may have instantly changed his mind a few months later but couldn't tell me about it. A Rover 90 T-Boned his Elan and while the sills and doors were like a quaile's egg wrapped in baco-foil the chassis was unyieldingly strong and he ended up as thin as Steak Canadienne squashed between it and the tank-like Auntie Rover. I wasn't a fan of the Elan etc, especially as I did recovery work for a local garage and had to retrieve the wreck.

As a Turbo Esprit owner since 1985 cant fault this video. Very accurate and full marks for pointing out that Lotus engineers time was far better spent optimising the engine and suspension rather than designing switches! I owned an '86 Turbo Esprit HCi for a few years and in my opinion, the '86-'87 were the best years as they had improved front suspension based on Toyota bits rather than archaic Triumph trunnions, and the higher-compression engine with Bosch fuel injection was another great leap forward, all still within the beautiful Giugiaro lines (I never really warmed-up that much to the Peter Stevens version). One thing I'll have to disagree with you on is the shifting. The C35 gearbox actually shifts pretty nicely, but there are two caveats: First of all, you're working a long linkage that moves rods and joints all the way back to almost the rear bumper. This means that the linkage must be maintained. There are four rubber/plastic bushes in the linkage, and I'd wager that they've never been renewed in 90% of these cars. I did mine and after that the shifting felt wonderful. Along with this, the clutch must be properly adjusted -neither too much nor too little play in the slave rod- for shifting to be graceful. Second, it's still a Citroen gearbox. She is a French lady; you mustn't rush her- but as long as you're OK with not being able to make bang-snick fast shifts, everything is just fine- and this doesn't prevent you at all from still being able to do some very spirited driving!
