Frederick M. Lehman, the author and composer of the hymn 'The Love of God', wrote a pamphlet in 1948 giving a history of the song.
Lehman wrote that the 3rd. Verse of his Hymn “was found written on a cell wall in a prison some 200 years ago. It is not known why the prisoner was incarcerated; neither is it known if the words were original or if he had heard them somewhere and had decided to put them in a place where he could be reminded of the greatness of God’s love - whatever the circumstances, he wrote them on the wall of his prison cell. In due time, he died and the men who had the job of repainting his cell were impressed by the words. Before their paint brushes had obliterated them, one of the men jotted them down and thus they were preserved.”
Rev. Lehman, died in Pasadena, California in 1953. He had written hundreds of gospel songs and founded the Nazarene Publishing House in Kansas City, Missouri.
Charles Spurgeon, the prince of preachers once said that if there were one subject that he could always talk about but felt utterly incapable of explaining was the love of God. Preaching one Sunday morning he quietly said, “The love of God makes me shrink back from this platform utterly ashamed of my poor feeble words. This love of Christ is the most amazing thing under heaven, if not in (all of) heaven itself.”
King David, a man responsible for writing more about the love of God than most in Scripture, wrote in Psalm 103:11: For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him.
'The Love of God' remains a classic in the history of Hymnology and hopefully, future generations will discover and appreciate it even more.
